Today dawned bright and sunny. I haven't seen the high for today but it sure was hot! We took the subway over to the lake side. Started on a suggested walking tour in the Lonely Planet guide but soon got interested in the things around us and just went from one interesting thing to another. We took a tour of the Skydome - home of the Toronto Argonauts and the Blue Jays. Massive place - went behind the scenes, saw the place being spruced up for the big game on Thursday night (I'm trying to convince Ron that he would like to go to a football game). They were rolling up the flooring and replacing it with special stuff for the game. We went into the TV comentators' box, a private box, the broadcasters, journalists box, ... read more

This morning we left Calgary. Boy! Was that ever hard! Lovely family! Grateful for their love and care. Grateful for just having them as family. Flight was a short 3 hrs. Kept busy with crosswords and reading the news. It was pay-as-you-go on Westjet but that was OK. Toronto airport not as magnificent as Vancouver but a lot quicker through the gates etc. Hotel Best Western Princess is fine. Best of all, it has air conditioning. Drive from airport long and slow - construction. Had an early dinner (missed lunch) and took a short walk downtown. Not a great first impression - beggar on the street, strange man shouting "I steal police cars" (he looked all red in the face and quite strange (poor fellows!) Then came upon a couple - the guy looked like he ... read more

Today Leith flew in from Halifax on Porter Airlines. Jenn, Lindsay and I wandered Union Station but most of their stores were closed. We did manage to get some yummy Starbucks and Lindsay had to squash her craving for Cinnabon…that stuff will kill you will all the butter they use! But at least you’ll die happy! So we finally went to the main Union Station building. They have the names of cities that the VIA trains used to stop at except when they built that building it was back when Thunder Bay was known as Fort William and Port Arthur and that’s what’s carved on the wall. As we’re sitting there and waiting one of the funniest things happened. A guy with an umbrella was sitting a good 20 feet across from us with his umbrella ... read more

Finally have a long period of internet access (in Quebec City!) and have about 3 blogs to here goes! May have to start bullet pointing things. I apologise for the shoddy writing, but am trying to write these blogs quickly with as much info as possible! We spent a lovely few days in Barrie with Sian, Brad & Owen, their amazing house and their half-awesome half-scary cat, Optimus. Brad met us half way on Monday afternoon and that evening we spent drinking too many rye and cokes and playing a lot of Guitar Hero, which is surprisingly hard. We spent Tuesday going for a drive around Barrie (beautiful scenic city on Lake Simcoe) and then going for a few drinks and Sian and Brad cooked us a delicious dinner on the barbecue in the evening. ... read more

So after waking up waaaaaaaaay too early, we finally left Regina at 10:15 on Air Canada. I stupidly ate a croissant from Tim Horton's in the airport before we left, but once we were on our way to Toronto, the flight attendant asked if we wanted an omelet or pancakes. Even though Cor and I were both stuffed, we promptly ordered an omelet and demolished most of it (check out the first of many food pictures). Probably the best airplane food that we ever had....and Cor really liked the little salt and peppers. We're now hanging out in the lounge in Toronto and despite the fact that we have probably consumed more calories than what we would eat in a normal day, I'm considering getting some ravioli and Cor just finished some chips and salsa. Does ... read more

So the journey begins. This is definitely not my first trip to China, and certainly not the longest, but it is the first time I've been away for more than 3 weeks in over 6 years. Plus I'm married now, which makes a difference. Husband left the airport hotel for work around 6:30. Blah. Not fun, but it is "only" 63 days before I see him again so the sooner he left, the sooner I could start waiting for our reunion. A single friend said this morning "I can't wait to feel that pain". Hmmm. Good point, I'll stop complaining. I may be away, but I am still loved, which is nice. Back in the day when I was a single traveller it was "easier" I guess, but it sucks to know that there is no ... read more

We're finished packing and all set to leave tomorrow morning. This entry is more of a trial to make sure that everything is working well, since there is not much to say. Our last day of preparations was long, full of shopping, driving around, and there was lots to do, but now it's over, and tomorrow we begin more than a month of much simpler days: bike, stop, repeat. Below you can see a picture of Therese's front hall full of stuff as we were sorting through what to pack, and what to leave behind. In the end we did a pretty satisfactory job of packing, and I think that the weight on our bikes will be pretty reasonable for the trip we're planning - though we may start to miss variety in our clothing by ... read more

WHAT A TRIP.... It started with the alarm going off at 7:45 a.m. e.s.t (6/31) and is winding down now at 10pm brussels time (4 p.m. e.s.t. 7/1).... The flight out of Tampa was delayed, which made for an interesting time to say the least. Our 1-hour layover in Toronto turned in to a mad dash through the airport to get the connecting flight. One upside of the flight was that I got to see Niagara Falls from about 15,000 ft. (pretty cool)... Anyways, back to Toronto airport.. In Tampa we were told we would not need to get our luggage in Toronto and that it would go to the next plane...WRONG, 20min to flight leaves we find out we need to get our luggage, get it on the plane, clear security and customs (for the ... read more
