Today, we headed off to Canada, but first we visited the Roswell P Flower Memorial Library in Watertown, NY. Though Watertown had a few private libraries at the time, the city had discussed having a public library open to all, and Emma Flower offered to build one to honor her father, a former governor of New York. The library continues as a public lending library, and also apparently houses a genealogical research library, but also houses quite a number of unique pieces of art that you can view in your library visit. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. I may have to return to Watertown for some genealogy research of my own! We drove north and east to the St. Lawrence River to the 1000 Island region, which straddles the US/Canadian border ... read more

Geo: 44.3247, -76.1613Today we drove for 2.5hr to the town of Gananoque, at the eastern end of Lake Ontario. This is where the St Lawrence River starts its journey through Montreal and Quebec to the North Atlantic Ocean. Gananoque is one of the tourist ports for the area's "1000 Islands" - home to many mansions, and to the salad dressing.Unfortunately the good weather we were enjoying in Toronto at the start of the trip did not last and the overcast conditions did not do justice to the beauty of the islands. In the evening we caught up with Eddie McLean who is working on Canadian mining projects until the end of the year.... read more

Geo: 44.3339, -76.1558The good news is that the weather is much improved on yesterday but notas awesome as the day before. Lazy morning as looking to get toGananoque for the 11am ferries. Takes about 30 minutes from Kingston. Get there only to discover we had the wrong information so the 2.5hour cruise doesn't depart until 1pm. We take a walk around town sndend up at the Gananoque Inn which was an awesome pub for an early butlight lunch. Pulled Pork rolls...yum. That didn't stop us wantingthe left over Tim Horton donuts. Off to the cruise. The cruise was great. There has been great debateover wharis and island...and you can see why. It must be above waterall year round, have at least one branch of a tree and be at least 1foot square. Some of the islands ... read more

Kitchener, Peterborough and the Kawarthas, Prince Edward Country, 1000 Islands – 13-15 August 2016 Travelling from Niagara Falls area we headed west through Hamilton to Kitchener. We were ready for a coffee so we found a wonderful bakery with outside seating as it was a lovely warm day with a gentle breeze. We walked inside and what we saw was what we were hoping ….. Kitchener Buns, our favourite buns from the German area of the Barossa Valley and Handoff in Adelaide. These buns have very unique tasting dough and are so moist. They are called Berlin Buns in Kitchener (interesting!!) and instead of having cream inside them, they had either vanilla cream custard or chocolate cream, but the bun tasted the same. Tom & I shared one over a lovely coffee. They also had the ... read more

We left Ottawa today. Sad, it is a nice town. Less sad to leave to hotel. The room was no more than ok, its main advantage was its size. The hotel had no laundry room and no breakfast but the price didn't show that. Maybe I expected too much from a Sheraton hotel. Anyway, we had breakfast at a Tim Hortons (you can have your sugar with sugar, glucose, syrup, chocolate... you get the idea. Not safe for diabetics). Then we stopped at a grocery store on our way to pick up our car from Gaye & Bob. And to thank them again. We went on our way South towards the St. Lawrence and the Thousand Islands. We stopped at the St. Lawrence Islands National Park Interpretive Center at Mallorytown Landing. They have a very nice ... read more

We stayed at Radisson Suites last night in Toronto, checked in near midnight after all our night-time fun. Slept too late this morning and didn't get going until ten. We've learned to grab good coffee at the Tim Horton chain fast food places...quick, and cheap. We arrived at Gananoque in the early afternoon and what a sweet little town it is. We are here because it is one of the centers of activity for the Thousand Islands, one of the major stops of this trip. We are staying at the Riverview Bed and Breakfast, the couple that own it are fun and intelligent and our room is comfortable with a jacuzzi tub. There are only three rooms in the house and they are all full tonight. We will meet everyone tomorrow at breakfast. There are really ... read more
