The leaf colors in Algonquin Provincial Park were really amazing. Neither of us had seen such a variety of brilliant reds and oranges and purples and yellows. They were luscious and delectable and delicious - a feast for the eyes. We spent two days of “Ohhh’s” and “Ahhh’s.” We hope you appreciate the view from Booth Rock (first 2 photos). It was an hour and a half hike, a good bit of it uphill and a portion boggy and slippery; it ended with 167 high steps to the top of the rock. It was one of the 5 hikes listed as "difficult" in the Park literature. Everything considered, I’m kind of proud of that hike. Thanks, Trainer Kathy. I’ve included some photos of photos from the Algonquin Museum. ... read more

around Saturday -- As you may have noticed, the Mckenzie King estate photos didn’t show up in the last blog. The internet connection we were using wasn’t very reliable and we’d already lost one attempt at blogging, so we decided not to send all the photos, which are slow to upload. We had been hiding out in the parking area of a restaurant nearby which had unsecured Wi-Fi, checking our emails and sending out the blogs in something of a rush every day or two. So here are the photos. These are King’s summer homes as he worked in Ottawa for 22 years. He never married. We were impressed by how modest his digs were. I’ve also included some photos from the steam train ride we took along the Gatineau River. A note about Canadians: One ... read more

Oh my, is that the sun I see shining in the sky ? Yes it is ! YAY ! I’m telling you it’s a miracle we don’t have pneumonia or something. After all that cold and wet weather yesterday now today it’s already sixty degrees and it’s only 9:00 in the morning. I don’t think it even made sixty all day yesterday. Well we’re not going to complain we’re just going to embrace this gorgeous day and enjoy every minute that it has to offer. I sure do wish it had a swimming pool to offer me today cause I am quickly losing my tan and that’s not good because I want to wear shorts and I can’t wear shorts if my legs are glowing. On a positive note, my knee has almost healed completely and ... read more

I am convinced that Thanksgiving Weekend is the best time to go camping. Not only are the campgrounds pretty much empty, but the weather is usually nice and it's the peak of the fall colours. The 3 day weekend was the perfect opportunity for us to drive north to take in the beauty of the season. Our car rental wasn't the little economy car I had requested - but some fancy, luxury Chyrsler car instead. I don't like driving big cars like this, especially since i suck so bad at parking. But I quickly got used to it and thankfully didn't scratch it up. The first day we visited Petroglyphs Provincial Park just north of Peterborough. You're not allowed to take any pictures of the petroglyphs because it's disrespectful. But trust me, it was amazing and ... read more

29th June 2008 This morning it was still a bit cloudy but it had stopped raining. Amy starting the morning with a run whilst Dinah went for a walk (with camera of course). We had to start collecting our things together and packing for the next leg of our travels. Amy took off kayaking with Jaqueline on Paint Lake, and after an hour or so of sitting in the sun on the deck and watching the chipmunks and the humming birds we decided that we should go out in the motor boat to look for them. We then sat down to a mid morning brunch of 'wife saver' which Susie had made earlier. This is egg, pototo and ham on top of bread baked in the oven. Then it was a mad scramble to get Amy, ... read more

Decided this place deserved a blog of it's own. The nicest bit of Canada I've seen. That includes all the spectacular snow capped peaks of the Rockies. May just be because the area is not well known so no one else goes. Wilderness much more fun when it's empty. Had Luxury acommodation (own room, practically empty hostel so bathroom, kitchen and lounge to ourselves) and amazing host. Took us on a tour of the area in his car, 3 hikes plus a fascinating visitors centre and art gallery. Stopped to look at a couple of moose by the side of the road. Tame creatures ignored the traffic and the continous supply of passers by stopping to take photos. Our eagle eyed guide even spotted a couple of mink. Mother and at least 5 tiny babies. Awww, ... read more

We arrived at the park at the East Gate and went straight to the visitor’s center. The nice girl there set us off to do some cool camping in the interior of the park and have a canoe delivered to us to go to our camping site (you can only access these campgrounds by canoe)….unfortunately, the girl at the information center gave us the wrong information and couldn’t get our canoe delivered, which means, we couldn’t do the interior camping. Bummer! ☹ We were a little bit discouraged by this because we had wasted a lot of our time to arrange it, but we still even enjoyed our camping site at Canisbay campground. During this day, we did a nice short trail called Two Rivers. This trail leads to beautiful cliffs and beautiful scenery. It would ... read more

Algonquin Provincial Park Ater stopping at the Flying Saucer Diner in Niagara (well we were in North America!) we made our way to one of the wineries that the region is famous for to try the local speciality - ice wine (all in the name of culture of course!) They make it in the winter when the grapes are actually frozen and as a result is really sweet. Then it was our half way stop at a place called Bracebridge famous for their bean salad apparently. We made it to the Wolf Den hostel just outside Algonquin National Park in the afternoon where are home this time was a log cabin for the 4 of us. The place really reminded me of River Valley in NZ for those of you that did Kiwi. Was very tranquil ... read more

I had a successfull, although long, day. It took sometime and trips to the library, the Land Registry Office, and Knox Presbyterian Church, but I found where my Dad use to live in Goderich. The thing that made it tough was that, back in the time of the 1911 Census, there were no street addresses. However, I did find that he lived on St. Vincent and that street is only on block long. A very nice lady in the Land office pulled out the right book and I found the particular plot. Referencing that to a present map pinpointed the house. I went over to the house and met some of the family now living there. They had no idea about the history of the place and couldn't decide amongst themselves whether they had been there ... read more
