Bob and I returned to Nova Scotia from Newfoundland via the Port aux Basque Ferry in southwest Newfoundland, a 5 hour ride (give or take) to Halifax, NS. Our first small adventure was to re-visit the Shubenkadia Wildlife Park. You'll see photos of a cute little moose and two peculiar looking fowl I took at the Park. We first travelled to Nova Scotia 15 years ago. We think this was our 7th trip. It's a delightful and interesting Province to spend some time and the Scotians (?) are universally friendly, courteous, and kind. The photo of the bridge piling is in the Bay of Fundy area which has the highest tides in the world, usually over 50 feet. Imagine something like that happening in your back yard twice every 24+ hours. We then began our way ... read more

We stayed at my mom’s friends B’nB for 4 days. They had a cricket in they’re house and it was really annoying. They wanted it to exterminated it but once we looked it up we wanted to keep it alive, because crickets bring good news. Once it leaves you find out the good news. The first day we walked around town looking at all the pretty houses and shops. Then we went and saw the ships in the harbour. For supper we had crab sandwiches. Day 2. We went with Janet to drop things at her friends place. Then she showed us a great place to kayak. After we picked up George we went to a bunch of different beaches. I went swimming at Hurtles beach it was really cold but it was really fun. At ... read more

We stayed at Rissers Beach for 3 days. The first day we went to a couple different beaches. I didn’t go swimming at any of them but we looked at rocks and shells, with a game of tag. Back at the camp site I did some more work. For supper we had taco salad. Day 2. In the morning me and mom went for a walk on the beach and a board walk. We stayed at camp to do much work with some play. For supper we had frozen dinners. Day 3. Today we went to Hurtles Beach for a hike around a peak and in the woods I really liked it, if you are in that area I suggest to go on it. Once we got back to the camp site I did more work. ... read more

The first night traveling to the B’nB we slept in the car. The reason was because when we got to the camp spot and didn’t go far enough so we thought that there wasn't a place to camp. In the morning mom went further in and found there was a place to camp. We drove to Halifax and went to pier 21 one of the biggest migration centers in Canada! Between 1928 -1971 more then 1,000,000 people went through! Imagine how many went through all the immigration centers in Canada! Wen we were walking back to the car we bought a BBQ pork bun. Janet B’nB is really nice place, check it out here: http://www.bbcanada.com/5511.html?showpage=1... read more

We arrived at Risser's beach Provincial camp ground. This place is gorgeous. We got a site on the water. The sites are large and you access the water by a path from your camp site. We had arms of rock protecting a little sand beach shared only with our neighbouring site, who were lovely people, Jim and Della. You can also walk down the beach (not at high tide) to get to the large public beach where Jacob could run up and down the beach on hard packed sand, chasing the waves or maybe they were chasing him. The weather turned to deep blue skies, no wind and 22 to 23 degrees, awesome. We spent one day driving further down the coast to check out different beaches, walking along the water, picking shells, looking for interesting ... read more

The fortress of Louisbourg is as phenomenal as everyone claims. The fort wasn't really there at all untill they rebuilt it completely, and the did it completely like the one of the original times. They used the same materials and building styles. I found Jacob in the blacksmith's shop. The blacksmith is dressed in period clothing, has been working a forge for many years, and loves his work. He was deep into conversation about the quality of coal. He mines his coal himself from the area. Jacob was absorbing all like a sponge. We took a tour, which gave us a much better idea of the time and people. We could have stayed for days. They no longer let the pigs run free in the streets but they were there penned along with the geese, and ... read more

The new roads built in Nova Scotia led us to Mahone Bay and Lunenburg a UNESCO heritage site. Beautiful coloured buildings nestled in the bay on many levels. The hillsides are very steep and overlook the quiet bay with old wooden sailing boats and small fishing vessels. The churches were all in a row and so if you are not welcome in one type of religious organization then there is another next door. Lutheran/ Unitarian/Anglian/ Baptist etc. Very colourful churches with their manses next door overlooking the estuary. The locals are mainly artists and artisans and the folk scene is prolific. The art is modernistic and vivid in colour just as the buildings are . Large range of colours on show from the usual red to vivid purple.... read more

Geo: 44.3772, -64.3185Lunenberg is a pretty little town on the coast of Nova Scotia, south of Halifax. It was originally settled by the French but the English, wary of those Roman Catholics, imported a whole bunch of French and German protestants who started by farming and then got into boatbuilding and fishing and built themselvs a solid community and some beautiful fishing schooners, prominent among them the Bluenose which spent the summer fishing then took on all comers in the Fishing Schooners international sailing race and won every year, and i s now featured on a Canadian 50 cent stamp. It was eventually pensioned off and sank somewhere on the other side of the world but now they have Bluenose II which takes tourists round the bay.Seriously though they have an impressive collection of large sailing ... read more

It's been awhile since I filled you in on our travels so will try to catch up a bit here. From Beddeck we travelled down the coast to Halifax (where we only stopped for fuel and groceries) then on to a campground at Peggy's Cove. Its the rocky shore line worn smooth by the waves and the lighthouse that has been there and working since 1868, that make this such a polular place. It is very unique and I am glad we went to see it. Also it is famous because of the Swiss airline that went down off the coast and over 200 people died there is a memorial to these people at the cove. So before I go any further I have to tell you that Nova Scotians are divided, on the south shore, ... read more

So, we're headed off tomorrow!! We leave for Paris for a night before we continue on our way into the capital Ouagadougou, in Burkina Faso. We're not exactly sure what to expect but it will be an adventure either way. After packing and re-packing my backpack 4 times I think I've managed to fit most of my gear in 2 bags for the next 3 months. Hannah, Katie and I met up in LaHave, NS for some last minute pre-trip planning and I think we're finally ready to head out (at least as ready as we're going to be). We took the time to say good bye to the beautiful Atlantic, and any ocean for that matter. If there is one thing we can say for sure about Burkina it will be hot, and our Canadian ... read more
