Lighting Up the Lighthouse Trail Touring around Nova Scotia for 4 weeks by car over the past two summers, The Travelling Canucks have travelled extensively along the South Shore's Lighthouse Route that is known for its lighthouses, rugged coastline and stormy seas. We have journeyed along quiet country roads along the beautiful coastal landscapes dotted by coastal villages full of historic charm. We have followed the shoreline roads past rugged, wave-carved headlands and tranquil island-studded bays, walked along wind-blown beaches and stopped at historic towns and weathered fishing villages to soak up the maritime lifestyle and hospitality. The South Shore of Nova Scotia that extends west from Halifax to Yarmouth on the western tip of Nova Scotia is one of the most beautiful parts of Nova Scotia. Coming from British Columbia, it reminds us of h ... read more

After we dropped the car off we headed back to the HI Hostel in Halifax to stay for another two nights. It is nice going back to a hostel you have stayed at before as it feels a bit like home when you return! (or as close to home as we can get). This is Beth again by the way! We chilled out at the hostel all afternoon, then as it was Saturday night we headed out for a drink at the Halifax Ale House (good name) and then met up with Noam and Jeremy; two cool canadian guys who were staying in Bear on the Lake hostel with us last week, and went to for a few more drinks and then a loud, hot and busy club for a final drink and headed home around ... read more

In a word? Bliss. Ironworks Distillery is set up in the old Blacksmith Shop in Lunenburg on 2 Kempt Street. It is a small artisanal distillery, which is not only absolutely gorgeous to be in, but (perhaps even better for some) the spirits they distill are exceptionally high quality — mind blowing, actually. Their blueberry liqueur is made from Nova Scotian blueberries and tastes .. well, like a mouthful of liquid blueberries that warms you to your toes. You prefer something a little more tarte? Try the cranberry liquere. The berries are grown just down the road at the Terra Beata Cranberry Bog (you can visit them too, if you like – Evelyn & David Ernst are always happy to show people around). They have rum made from all natural Caribbean molasses, vodka made from Annapolis ... read more

Aspotogan (ASS-pa-TOH-gan) Peninsula. The name is an anglicized version of a Mi’Kmaq word Ashmutogun or Ukpudeskakun, and the peninsula is situated between St. Margaret’s and Mahone Bays. Regardless of where the name came from or whether you’ve ever heard of it or not, once you’ve been there you’ll never, ever forget it. It’s a simply stunning drive and you’ll surely use up a memory card snapping photos along the way. Drive it by car? Well, if you must. But you are far better off going by bike, becase in a car you are simply going to miss way too much! Oh – you don’t have a bike? I’m sure we can help you out there. There are certainly plenty of places to rent bikes around here in addition to our backpacker hostel, so even if ours ... read more

Holy cow - it's Saturday morning, June 18th. Before my wake up I had 2 pee but the captain was brushing his teeth so I peeked my head outside to the 4-8ers doing fresh water rinse and there's land. We're surrounded by it! It's very quaintly North American picturesque looking: green and lots of evergreen trees lining the horizon - how strange to no longer see coconut trees! It's cool - chilly, almost like Christmas morning. And there's an excitement and anticipation in the air. We are going through customs, maybe right now. They are nice enough to come out to us to complete it so that we, family and friends are not tortured waiting at the dock for 2 hrs. Today is going to be a long day and I wish I'd slept longer but, ... read more

So how about this for something different: Head into Liverpool today and stop at the Market on the Mersey – a new market which will be each and every Monday all summer (wow – what a great way to start the week!). Get all your needs & desires and then visit some of the unique museums there … seriously bizarre to the seriously amazing. Check out the whole scene – what a lovely town it is. Then head back and stay in the backpackers hostel, stopping en route to pick up a few live lobsters from a local fisherman, a french stick, some butter & lemon from the Lunenburg Save Easy and a bottle of wine or two from the NSLC. Have your first class lobster boil right here at the hostel, where we have ... read more
