This past weekend, Nigel, Mel and their friends (who are now my friends) Eric, Annie-Claude and Otis and myself went on a canoe and camping trip to Hidden Lake on the Ingram Trail. (45 minutes from Yellowknife). And it was a trip never to forget!!!! WOW!!! Friday, Mel and I spent most of the day getting ready, getting supplies packing, shopping and getting excited. Nigel did some shopping and arranged for a canoe for us. All packed, supper made for the trip and the canoe on top of the car, we are all off! We got to Powder Point (the start of the trip). Cars unloaded, canoes packed. We had 2 canoes....Eric, Annie Claude and Mel and the 2nd canoe had Nigel, Otis and myself. I was a little worried about bringing Otis, thinking he might ... read more

The Dempster Highway is a sort of potholed gravel track that starts just south of Dawson City and ends up in Inuvik in the Northwest territories, crossing the Arctic Circle on the way. It is built on permafrost, and when the road heats up the permafrost melts and the whole road sinks and becomes a small lake. It kills cars. The highway is constantly being reworked, and nowadays is built up on a large mound of gravel to preserve the permafrost (and therefore the track). I managed to get a lift (along with Keira - one of the other WWOOFers at the farm - and a guy called Brandon) up to Inuvik, on a fuel-price-sharing basis. The first day's travel - to Eagle Plains - was pretty hairy since the weather was bad and it rained ... read more

After a night of celebrating Christine's birthday (Mel's friend) at 2 local pubs...the Black Knight and Twist, headed home for a night of sleep and not getting up to pack up for another driving day! Today, was some relaxing and a tour of Old Yellowknife! Mel gave us (Otis came as well) a walking tour of Old Yellowknife, where people first settled! Beautiful! I love the houseboats on the water...bright colours. They canoe in during the spring/summer and drive on the ice road in the winter. There is a time each spring, where the ice is too soft, the folks who live in the houseboats will stay in town! It is amazing, most of the houses don't have basements, because the rock has to be blasted. The house Nigel and Mel live in...is built on rocks! ... read more

Up early this morning, to get ready for the last of the drive to Yellowknife! After, a walk around Manning before getting back in the car around 9:30 am! After getting gas, we set out for the drive, and before you know it, we were crossing into the Northwest Territories and the 60th parallel! And the bugs were there at the border to greet us! Thank goodness, Mel told me to gas up everytime I saw a gas station and to watch out for bison the road! Where I stopped for lunch was the last gas station I saw until I reached Yellowknife (5 hours later). I did see 6 bison on the road, except they were on the side of the road, grazing and lots of dips. When I got to the ferry to cross ... read more

There are so many things that I will remember about the Great Northern Arts Festival. The art was varied and impressive. We were able to watch the native artists working on beadwork, yarn, painting and stenciling. There were carving tents to watch the stone, antler and bone carvers. We were able to see several pieces in differnet stages of the creative process. Friday night we attended the ArtCirq. It is a circus performed by members of a small communtiy in Igloolik. It was very entertaining! On Saturday I attended a workshop on Digital Photography. I look forward to doing some unique things with the pictures form our trip.... read more

We made it back to Fairbanks for a couple days to recoup. We wanted to get to the Great Northern Arts Festival in Inuvik, so we drove like crazy to get here.... We went almost 400 miles the first day from Fairbanks to Tok, over the Top of the world Highway To Dawson City. Took the ferry across the river and spent a night in Dawson. We got on the Dempster highway, unsure of what to expect. After the experience on the Dalton Highway, we got new tires and hoped for the best on our next 500 mile dirt road. The roads were in very ggod shape and we made good time. We spent the night at almost the 1/2 way point in Eagle Plains. What a great surprise! The food was very good and the ... read more

Hi everyone, happy new year. Sorry for not writing in so long. Things have been a little bit crazy. Over Christmas holidays Dakotah and I travelled back to Kamloops for two weeks of visiting. We had fantastic visits with our friends and Family making trips out to Salmon arm, ice fishing, Clearwater for Church one Sunday and New years eve. But this trip also ended up being a trip of discovery. As I learned that Tim and I will not be planning a wedding anymore. It was a tough holiday season but I know that with God's leading I will be alright So now instead of spending money on dresses and dreaming about our life together I am searching for a good vacation spot for Dakotah and I. And potentially planning for staying here in Yellowknife ... read more

The winter is actually here now. It snowed about 20 centimeters yesterday. I finally figured out how the people here say there is lots of snow here. They really dont get many snow falls but it never melts so there is accumulation. The walk to work was cold today (minus 18) and I have not bought a proper jacket yet so I have improvised. My scarf gets wrapped up over my head and I wrap a long piece of fleece around my bum because my jacket's not long enough. Ya, I look a little ridiculous but I'm warm. That minus 18 Celsius really didn’t feel that cold. We're going to be just fine here as long as I can stand to miss out on all of this time that I could be with my Fiancé, Tim. ... read more

Well, My week. I went out to Edmonton Monday night for a Job interview Tuesday Morning. I spent some great time with my friend Sue. It was fantastic to meet her wonderful little boy. The interview went well and Sue and I did some shopping in the Big City. I flew Canadian North Airlines, What a fantastic service. You get a real meal and when they serve drinks you they give you a whole can of pop. I wasn’t too excited about sitting on the runway for an hour on the way home though. Initially it was because we were waiting for a part to take up to Yellowknife, then there was a dent on the wing that had to be assessed. Everything was ok and we flew away an hour late. Wednesday and Thursday I ... read more

What a good day. Mary and I went out to her cabin on River Lake. I let Mary know that I wanted to get out of town this Saturday. She let me know that she had to get out to bale out her boat and invited me to come along. Dakotah and Mary's daughter have become good friends so Dakotah hung out with her while Mary and I and the dogs went out the Ingram trail, one of the two roads out of Yellowknife. We bailed her boat out and took a ride over to her cabin. That is a beautiful place. I took a couple of these photos from the cabin lot. Yes there is fish in there, aparently there are really nice lake trout along with the pike in this lake. Daisey had a ... read more
