“Though we travel the world over to find the beautiful, we must carry it with us or we will not find it.” Ralph Waldo Emerson The ferry to Vancouver Island was much larger than I imagined. The ferries I had taken in the US on the East coast were much smaller. This one had a coffee and gift shop onboard and 5 decks for cars. The ride was about an hour and half and I just sat and read my guidebooks and brochures for Vancouver Island. I decided that I would not go directly to Victoria but instead drive up the coast along the ocean first. I did just that. It was a nice drive and I made a few stops. I was hoping to see some wind surfers along the way as this is a ... read more

Hmm sorry everyone, it seems that the last blog post was some 30 days ago which makes us alot lazier than we thought. Actually this entry was started on the 15th March but we shelved it for reasons we can't remember. Anyway better late than never... As life in Whistler settled into a routine we decided to take a break and head out to Vancouver Island for a week. We caught the ferry from Horseshoe bay to Departure bay in Nanaimo, the crossing took about 1hr 30min, luckily the weather was perfect, sunny and clear so no sea sickness. As we sat on the ocean side we missed the view of the BC coastal mountains but there was a great image of a distant mountain, I guess in Washington State, which appeared to be floating in ... read more

It's been a while since we've had a blog. Life has been fairly quiet lately and a lot of time has been spent in Vancouver. We had hoped to go to Nova Scotia at Christmas but that plan soon got squashed by over 50cm of snow falling in Vancouver which is a rarity. Add that to snow in Halifax and the fact that it's the busiest travel time of the year and you get the idea that going stand by definitely wasn't going to work. So home we stayed and enjoyed being snowed in, literally. We had a few snowy drives around Stanley Park and winter white wonderland trudges to the local pubs on Commercial Drive and that made up our holiday week. We did manage to make it out to our friend Mike and Jina's ... read more

Last April we traveled to the small town of roatan just off the coast of honduras. Man what an awesome laid back place. We loved it so much we feel we could move there in the future. Gumbelima park was amazing and most of the people we talked to spoke english. No problems. there. Just this past month we drove out to tofino and enjoyed our stay. its an amazing place of course. We got into port alberni around 4 pm, We decided to stop for the night and were plesantly surprised. We stayed at a nice clean hotel and then ventured out for a coffee. Stopping down at the harbour quay. Very quaint with nice views of the harbour. We Had handmade goodies at, The Sugar Shak. Wow I had a few bear claws and ... read more

It was beautiful weather this morning and the dogs gave us all a royal greeting before we took them down to the “office building” to wake the kids. After breakfast we went in search of blackberries which took us past the beaver pond and to a higher piece of ground. The blackberries were great (even the dogs ate some). Benjamin got his first taste of an electric fence on the way back when he moved out the way as the cows came down the path. We had one more session with the Alpacas before saying goodbye and heading off for Tofino. A couple of stops for food supplies in Naniamo and we were off for the 4 hour trip to the other side of the island. We stopped for lunch at MacMillan Provincial Park and explored ... read more

Had a better sleep than yesterday. Had breakfast, and visited the Trilogy Cafe right outside the field station. The guy gave me a discount because I brought my own cup! I was able to drink fresh, hot coffee as I strolled around the garden. I found the pathway on to the mud flat...and it's really muddy. Hard to believe shorebirds actually come here and that it's a vital habitat. It seems impossible to habitat. I relaxed a bit in the gazebo designed by Jan Janzen, stared out into the pond that appearently has an alligator living in it. A hummingbird darted in front of me while I was standing there, and it scared me! It hummed briefly before darting someplace else. I also saw the roosters today, and there was one that I think came up ... read more

Woke up to the rooster crows just outside my bedroom. It was only 7:20am. So I had breakfast and jaunted down to Mackenzie Beach, which was rather impressive. The sand is so smooth, moist but not muddy. I walked around a bit, saw starfish on the beach, sea anemones (or some polyp) on the rocks, and barnacles too. People were climbing on the rocks, trying to get a better view of the beach, and some whiny kid was complaining about the barnacles. I sat on the beach for a bit, watching the waves and observing the sand, then headed back and caught the bus into downtown. Saw the Himwitsa gallery, which had some pretty nice things that were too expensive for my student budget. I stopped at a bakery called Sweet T's, and had a florentine. ... read more

Didn't want to get out of my comfy bed at the Nanaimo International Hostel. But I had to. Found the Greyhound Bus depot, it's kind of tucked away on Terminal Ave. The ride seemed quite quick, even though it was a 4-hour bus ride. The driver was nice, he gave a commentary about some of the things we passed, and offered to stop if there was something interesting (provided he had the time). The local Tofino Bus is a god-send; I don't know how else I could get from downtown Tofino to the Clayoquot Field Station-- 3km away-- for $1. I suppose renting a bike would be good, but expensive for three days; the taxi more so, and walking with my two packs iwould just make me deserve the backaches I would get with that option. ... read more

I’ve just ditched an idyic life in the BVI’s to live in one of the last undeveloped nature reserves on earth. The Bedwell Outpost is home to some of the wild and pristine nature in Northwest British Columbia. It is a biosphear Located 18 miles north of Tofino, in the Clayquot Wilderness, I feel I’m as remote as one can get. BEARS, BEARS, and MORE BEARS On my first day here, I am given a tour of the Clayquot Wilderness Retreat (www.wildretreat.com) and soon realized that I need not go further than the camp’s back yard to see black bears! Within my first hour there, I see two male black bears!! I can not believe how chilled out are, just grazing away on the lush green grass that is meant for the many horses living and ... read more

8th July 2008 Woke up in Pacific Sands resort, Cove Bay looking out at the Pacific Ocean on a very misty morning. After a coffee (we failed to finish rice salad for breakfast!) we delivered Richard to Surf Sisters for his lesson (Amy had run all the way!) We headed back to try and load the blog on the slowest connection ever and managed to get back just in time to see them finish up their lesson but they were so tired I didn't get a picture of them standing up on their surf boards, but lots of just falling as they were now so tired!Try not to talk about the luminous pink tea shirts which were compulsory for identification by the instructors as Richard was not amused!! I think the activity was very much enjoyed ... read more
