Road Trip Through the Canadian Rockies + More (6th - 16th August, 2006) Toronto to Vancouver to Revelstoke (Lake Williamson Campground) An early morning flight out of Toronto to Vancouver. After picking up a car at the airport we headed for Revelstoke. It was certainly a very scenic drive with snow on the mountaintops. Revelstoke to Yoho NP (Takakkaw Falls) Drove up to Mt. Revelstoke. Spectacular mountain views. Fantastic wildflowers and firs. Very, very pretty. We drove on through the Glacier National Park, over Rogers Pass (1327 metres) and through the towns of Golden and Field. We were given a recommendation in Field to camp at Takakkaw Falls. Sensational campsite. Set on the river, beneath the falls. We saw some columbian ground squirrels around the campsite. Had a great fire that night and watched the moon ... read more

Day 14... Greetings once again from the Canadian Rockies! Since Banff, we have travelled up the Bow Valley Scenic Highway (as recommended to us by some locals we met in Calgary). Along the way we stopped at Johnston's Canyon, Moose Meadows (sadly still no moose sightings despite the name!), and finished our drive in Lake Louise. We hiked to Lake Louise via the forest trail from our campsite and shared the view of the lake with seemingly hundreds of Japenese tourists, so moved swiftly up a huge hill to Mirror Lake and Lake Agnes for a bit more solitude. Less people but some Golden Mantled Ground Squirrels who insited they needed Martin's cheese & ham butty more than he did!! We hit Moraine Lake early the next morning in the style of keen photographers and we ... read more

Got up early today for an awesome roadtrip. To start it all off we (Jim, Ali, Jase and Kat) drove the 2ish hours to beautiful Lake Louise. As those of you who know of it or have been there will expect, it was PACKED with tourists, but it didnt phase us. We hiked a little to the end of the lake to get some more great photos, and on the way back saw an old guy playing "Amazing Grace" on some kind of tribal horn. It was all very soulful and us tourists sang along as the bells in the tower of the hotel chimed. For lunch we travelled on to Moraine Lake, which is the most intense green/blue colour you will ever see. Apparently the waters here get their awesome colour because of glacial sediments... ... read more

Banff So Banff isn't a very big town, but lovely and pituresque all the same. It's hard to get over how beautiful the clear green of the water is - Bow River, which flows past our hotel and through the middle of town. The hanging baskets are everywhere, beautiful, lush flowers that my dad keeps peering under to figure out how they're made. Our tour leader Rika keeps dropping hints about how she wants one of those hanging baskets, but if only Australian customs weren't so tight maybe we could bag one for ourselves. We went on a walk to Vermillion Lakes in the afternoon. Despite the name, they're not vermillion in colour and actually we only saw one of them anyway. It would have been a nice walk - the stream was so clear! - ... read more

Friday Landed into Calgary to wet weather. They’re been suffering from torrential rainfall, so made our way to Banff which was about an hour away by car and the weather was sunny and bright. Saturday Started with the Moose Network Athabasca tour, which would take us to Lake Louise, Rampart Creek, Edith Cavell, Jasper and back to Banff - a 4 day trip, but we decided to stay an extra night in Lake Louise. Tour consists of lots of hikes and sight seeing walks, which is a must as the scenery here is absolutely amazing (breathtaking - you’ll be out of breath walking all day:-) ) which was what we were expecting - typical Canadian scenery (girls sorry to say no Mounties). People are overly friendly - going out of their way to help. Haven’t got ... read more

Hi guys, What a weekend. Got back from Red Deer friday arvo and packed up for a weekend in the Rocky Mountains! My travelling companions for the weekend included Matt (the messy kiwi), Grant (the punctuallty-challenged South African) and the gals Amanda & Lyn (from remote east coast Antiganesh, akin to being from Longford...) We set off in the car towards Banff, aboot 1.5hrs from Calgary enjoying equally the beautiful mountain scenery and fine selection of "crap-classics" from Grants cd collection which included greats from Hootie & Bon Jovi. We stayed at a hostel in Banff Town, and got off to a flyer when "Skwinty" the grumpy Admin boy refused to join us in an enthusiastic round of Ducky Fuzz. Skwint let us off with a severe noise reprimand and no doubt returned to watching 37 ... read more

Hello All, Here's a few photos of what we have been upto since our last blog! We have had a few visitors over the last couple of weeks - Courtney and Dave came up from Portland for the Easter long weekend, and then Mel's Dad and his wife Mandy from Australia. We had a great time with the Americans (Courtney and Dave) (they really took to the 6 toy Koalas Mark's mum sent over!), the visit was short but we all had a great time!! (remember guys you are more than welcome to visit again in the summer :) Then Mel's dad and Mandy arrived (after a 12 hour wait at San Francisco airport! ugh) and we began plotting and planning our Road Trip to Lake Louise!!! After a couple of days seeing the sights in ... read more

It was a shame we had to leave Canmore, Banff and our nice hotel, but must press on in order to fit everything in we wished to see. Gail made use of the kitchen and made sandwiches for lunch with leftovers so that was hamburger buns filled with lettuce, ketchup, onions, tomatoes, and wait for it - stuffed jalapeno peppers! A rather odd sandwich, but there you go! Checked out at 11am after another breakfast of Lucky Charms. We took Bow Valley Parkway (Route 1A) up to Lake Louise, stopping off at Johnson Canyon 30k north of Banff to view the iced waterfalls. The lower falls were just over a kilometre away from the car park up through Johnson Canyon. The walk was pretty amazing, following the river along its route. Part of the walk was ... read more

Banff continued to be an amazing part of my trip. We met some great people and decided that we wanted to stay around a bit longer than planned. We noticed in reception a sign looking for volunteers so we enquired what that was all about. It turned out that if you volunteered to work in the hostel between 9am-1pm during the day, you could get a free nights accommodation-BRILLIANT! Or so we thought! The next morning at 8am, Lucy and I awoke and resentlfully got up...my tonsils were on fire and I considered pulling a sicky but figured on day 1 that wouldnt go down too well! Also, it was probably self inflicted considering for 3 nights straight we all played drink driving, (a drinking game with cards in case you were worrying!!)...and had been downing ... read more

With Adam safely here and recuperated, we hired a car and headed off to the Rockies. We were meant to get a small car but ended up with a V6 Chrysler. Very Nice!!! Also good because we have tons of stuff. We drove for 2 days to get to Banff, staying overnight in Revelstoke. On our way through to Banff, we stopped in at Lake Louise to drop in on Trevor Campbell, and old friend from Berowra. He happened to be working on the front desk when we rocked up and he was suprised to say the least! After a quick chat, we looked around Lake Louise before heading into Banff. We were hoping to catch up with Trevor properly but he hasn't made it out to Banff at this stage. We arrived in Banff after ... read more
