Last night took our 'freezing-in-our-tent' experience to new and icy levels. We should have guessed, I expect, by Lake Louise's impressive elevation - 1540 m above sea level. In fact, it claims to be the highest permanent settlement in Canada. So, our night was a long haul of lying awake trying not to transform into frozen carcasses, serenaded by the ever-present tooting of trains (we seem to be closer to the train line than ever at this campground) and the sounds of a raucous school group who decided to be our neighbours after we'd already pitched our tent and it was too late to turn and flee :-). We concluded the best thing for our groggy state was some sight-seeing, so we set off nice and early to see the Lake herself in all her glory. ... read more

The next morning, at the beautiful Takakkaw Falls, we were delighted by the antics of a little chipmunk, our first close-up wildlife encounter of the trip. Not that you could really call him wild. He had stolen a morsel someone had dropped on the ground and was contentedly munching away on his prize, blissfully unconcerned about its questionable nutritional value and the spectacle he was creating. Next, we set off to the famous Emerald Lake, stopping along the way at the point where the milky Yoho joins with the raging Kicking Horse River (aptly named, 'Meeting of the Waters') and the roaring Hamilton Falls. Emerald Lake is apparently best viewed at dawn and dusk, when it radiates a brilliant green hue as its namesake suggests. We were there near the middle of the day, when the ... read more

"I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones." ---Albert Einstein August 13, 2005, Saturday. Today we planned a hike and hike we did. The trails do not have switchbacks, so one is climbing up, up and up at a straight angle. The teahouse at Lake Louise is one of the most popular hike in the Rockies. After Niagara Falls, this is the most popular tourist attraction in Canada; the trail climbs through the forest to a couple of teal blue subalpine lakes. They are pristine jewels of the Rockies. After a few hours hiking one arrives at the Lake Agnes Teahouse where we sampled the green tea. The teahouse was built in 1925 and has stunning views of the lake ... read more

so our time in Lake Louise has come to an end. Basically it wasn't all it was cracked up to be and basically we were miserable, So why bother staying if we are miserable right???? Thats what we figured so at 3:15am we are hopping on the bus and going to Toronto, we will be on the bus for about 2.5 days but we will get to see the countryside as we go!! Here we are going to tour around Quebec and Ontario for a couple of weeks and then hit the states for a month or so on the trains and work our way back upto Ottawa where we will look for jobs for winter. So anyway we are excited and don't have any plans as to where we will be when we are going ... read more

Although we had originally planned to stay one more night in Jasper, we woke up this morning with itchy feet. We got a refund on our campground fees, and took off down the Columbia Icefields Parkway, which runs between Jasper and Banff. This highway is designed to be a scenic drive, not a transportation corridor. Large commercial vehicles are forbidden, and you must have a park pass to drive on this highway. The scenery all along the way is just one spectacular view after another, and there are abundant stopping places, ranging from pull-outs, through viewpoints, picnic grounds, all the way to the Icefields Centre, across the road from the Athabasca Glacier, about halfway along the route. We took the drive slow and easy, stopping frequently. Although the total distance of this drive is only 230 ... read more

So Canada is more than a little strange. They drive on the wrong side of the road - I let them know and I convinced them as well. I told them that the Japanese make cars especially for them, not one of them has been smart enough to point out that the Europeans make cars especially for us. They dont have round abouts. They have Four way stops. They give way to the right? Freaks. They have no floor drains in their bathrooms. Not in a house not in a hostel not in a hotel. I assume that nothing is ever spilt on the floor, nothing overflows and they are completely dry upon exiting the bath or shower. I have not mastered this yet and am stuck with a wet bathroom (oops washroom) floor. They dont ... read more

The date is the 18th June and summer has been here for 18 days now. As i mentioned in my previous message there has been pretty much non stop rain, not much of a summer the weather is about as cold as it is back home on the coast so Woz and I are starting to get a little disheartened with the whole place, we are not used to so much rain and being cooped up inside for such long amounts of time. That was until this morning....... i was at work (starting at 5:30am has its advantages) and it was really cold! About 6am it started to snow!!!!!!! Its summer and its snowing! the snow wasn't little stuff that melted as soon as it hit the ground it was big flakes that stayed around. It ... read more

This has been a little difficult to get used to considering how dry it is back home... Any way what have we been up to i hear you ask... Last week we took a road trip to Calgary with Mike and Kristina. The trip was a bit of a last minute hey we all have 2 days off together lets go to Calgary spur of the moment type decision (we only decided 2 nights before that we would go)!
