7/19 We left at 8:30AM for a guided bus tour from Jasper (elevation 3500 feet ) through the Athabasca Valley to explore Maligne Canyon, first on our day-long adventure. Here we were only a few kilometers from the BC border which explains why we are socked in with smoke in the middle of Jasper NP. We were told that in addition to British Columbia, there were hundreds of people evacuated from Yosemite due to the fires in CA. As the bus climbed into the Maligne Valley we saw several elk (Wapati is the native name for elk) near the highway. We are told they have been moving around because of the fires. We Crossed the Athabasca River (from the Woods Cree which means “where there are plants one after another”. This river originates from the Columbia ... read more

7/18 Knowing that we were leaving Lake Louise today, I wanted to make the most of my remaining time here. I got up around 7:30am, packed, got into my warm weather clothes and left with my camera to explore. The stark white Victoria Glacier was brilliant as it hung over Lake Louise. I photographed the reflections of bright red canoes and the grey-blue mountains on the still turquoise blue waters. Canoeists were already out braving the cold weather enjoying a paddle on the flat calm waters. I found some groupings of bright green and white Cornus Canadensis (Bunchberry or Creeping Dogwood) and fireweed, (the "Yukon flower”) at the edge of the lake. Rufous swallows darted around me enjoying the bugs (so far there were no discoverable pestering bugs on this trip). I soon met up with ... read more

Athabasca Glacier in the distance

The Athabasca Glacier, on the edge of the Columbia Icefields, was a 90-minute drive north along the Icefields Parkway. Shortly before arriving at the Glacier Discovery Center, heavy snow began to fall. After a half-hour delay to clear the roads, we boarded a bus which took us to a Ice Explorer snow bus which took us through a rocky glacial moraine, descending to the glacier via a 32% grade. We were able to walk around on the glacier though wind and snow limited our excursion to 15 minutes. Still, it was pretty amazing. Back on our own bus we dug into deli sandwiches and headed south. Our Jasper guide used the bus time to orient us to Jasper National Park, life of a park warden, overview of its plants and animals -- we saw several elk, ... read more

After a 4 hour drive up the Ice Field Parkway we arrived at Jasper National Park Whistler Campground for a 5 day stay. It is a beautiful campground that is very close to nature. In the early morning we seen Elk walk past the campsites. We were informed that a troublsome bear was wandering through the campground and to be careful. We took side trips to the town of Jasper, Maligne Canyon, Maligne Lake, and Annette Lake. See separate blog entry for day trip to British Columbia (1 hr from Jasper). Finley got to see Despicable Me 3 at the theatre in Jasper. On the last evening Gary took Finley on a Wildlife tour Finley got to see many birds, a herd of female Elk, bull Elk, coyote, mountain sheep and beaver lodges. The tour was ... read more

Rather than take the bus to town, we decided to walk along the woodland and riverside path. The estimate of half an hour was off by 100%. I should have known, because the estimate was from the guide who was off by by the same amount yesterday. Nevertheless, even with a definite chill in the air, the walk was both pleasant and invigorating. The route took us to the Old Fort Point, visited on our hike yesterday, over the bridge across the Athabasca River and along a well-maintained bike and walking path. The woods were soft with moss accented by a few rusty leaves and bright red berries. Crossing the highway into Jasper was easy – little traffic and a pedestrian walk signal. A train engine was idling in the not-too-distant station, but we hazarded the ... read more

The “Advanced Hike” this morning started on the familiar path around Lac Beauvert. Our guide pointed out the artificial loon nest far into the lake. The nest of logs and reeds was designed to make loons feel safe from canoeists. Wonderfully, the project was a collaboration between Parks Canada and the Jasper High School. She also drew our imaginations into seeing the ancient chief in “Old Man Peak”. On the other side of the lake, fresh snow on the mountain tops glowed pale pink in the morning light . We diverted on to Old Fort Road, and after a while came to a set of 81 stairs (about 40, she had said!) up to a view point - we overlooked a passage of braided bends in the pale blue Athabasca River. Wondering about my own sanity, ... read more

I bought myself a new toy! One of the big perks of travelling with two children is you get four cabin bags, which meant my shiny new drone was able to come to Canada with us. I was a little nervous going through security as there's so much negative press surrounding drones, but I needn't have worried, they didn't give it a second glance. Below is a short video I shot while driving the Icefields Parkway between Banff and Jasper, one of the worlds most scenic drives. The video certainly gives you a better idea of just how beautiful this place is, rather than having to rely on what I'm able to write down. Watching it back, I'm still awestruck on just how beautiful the scenery is, and can't believe that I was there, standing by ... read more

Readers, You will pleased to know you are not suffering from deja vu (or alcoholic memory blanks, Chris / Tim!). I managed to post the same blog twice by mistake. Sorry. So I will keep today's entry short. We went into Rockies again to see more huge waterfalls and canyons. Getting a bit blaze about it. But the views etc are wonderful. Saw more wildlife. This time an elk. Waited for a bear behind another tourists car. Turned out he had broken down. Felt foolish - like a few other Brits. Heard either a rattle snake or a big woodpecker real close by as we were having picnic. Decided not to investigate. Joy declared best cheese salad batch maker in Canada. Stayed overnight in Jasper. Very cute town with tons of stuff to see and do. Little time and must move so just spent the night and left. Left Jasper on Highway 1 East and went to the city of Hinton to Walmart to get a USB cable since I lost one. Met some folks in the parking lot and had a great conversation as he was retired from the oil field in Ft McMurray. Too highway 40 north through William A Switzer provincial park. Excellent scenery and saw a truck that had hit a moose. Wish I had stopped and took a picture. Massive damage and no one was around. It then hit me of the size of this country that you could do this in the middle of nowhere and it could be awhile till ... read more

Day 6 was absolutely incredible. Words cannot describe it. You just have to see the pictures. Calgary to Banff National park was awesome but the ride from Lake Louise up through Jasper Park is probably the best ride I have ever taken. Took forever to do 200 miles because we just kept stopping to take pictures. In fact many of my pictures were taken while driving at 60 mph. I highly recommend the chance to take Rt 93 through there just do it. From beautiful lakes to high mountains to glaciers it has it all. I will say nothing more. See you on day 7... read more
