I applaud my friend Seamus for moving out to Calgary from Brantford for a year to work and earn money before school. Living in a major city far from family and friends can be quite scary! Nane dropped me off at Seamus' work around 8 o'clock because we had plans to go out and do something to celebrate Halloween which was the night before. Once he was off his shift we bused over to his little apartment which was quite nice, and bundled up to go to Screamfest held at the Calgary stampede grounds. Screamfest is a combination of haunted houses, ghoulish games, and other scary activities. We went in all 6 haunted houses which were actually quite well done (one was completely pitch black so I forced Seamus to go first and navigate our way ... read more

I said a big fair well to Petra Chris and Preeti in Edmonton and boarded the greyhound bus to Calgary! It was snowing which was simultaneously beautiful and annoying. The trip was quite enjoyable and I had time to reevaluate my journey so far. Nane was waiting at the station for me and we loaded my heavy suitcase and backpack into her little car and headed to the north west end of Calgary! Nane's home reminds me a lot of her sisters, (my Oma's) house and had a German feel to it! Nane owns and rents out 7 other units in her building and since she is a flood victim since this past June, there was lots to do! Throughout the week and a half I stayed there I helped clear out the crawl space and ... read more

Since it is now fall I thought a pumpkin would be a perfect little decoration! I love fall, the beautiful colours, the pumpkin carving, pumpkin pie, thanksgiving, Halloween. Time to bring out the ugly sweaters! Preet picked me up and we waited for her friends Rae and Jelysza at her house! Off we go to Calgary driving in Jelysza's packed car listening to drakes new album! It was a 2.5 hour drive, and by the time we got to Calgary it was already dark! We got to our hotel that was kind of sketchy and got ready and went out to a club called "Black Betty". Preets friends are just as fun as she is and I had a blast that night! I had my first encounter with a ghost the first night we stayed in ... read more

Beautiful sunny day here in Calgary - cool in the morning but reached a maximum of 25 degrees C. Just perfect. We were straight out of the Casino carpark before 7.30am. We were off to visit the Heritage Park historical museum and Gasoline Alley this morning so we dove there, parked at the marina - had breakfast and did a tidy up of the RV before going over to the park. When we went to purchase our admission tickets we were advised that the park was closed on week days now that it was fall and only open weekends. A kind volunteer felt sorry for us and let us in to explore the place. It was great as we had the place to ourselves. We checked out the historical village and it's surrounds. We couldn't go ... read more

Geo: 51.0451, -114.063"The brakes feel like they are starting to go - you really have to stomp on the pedal to bring the car to a stop. And there's a problem with the fan - sometimes it's extremely weak, sometimes no air comes out at all, but the problem is intermittent and usually only lasts for twenty to thirty minutes". That was my response to the attendant when I dropped off the rental car at the airport at 4 AM today, when he asked if there were any problems with the car. The response? "It's a Micra!" the rental car attendant said with a smirk and a shrug. Normally, complaints of brake problems on a rental car from one of the biggest rental agencies in the World would elicit a concerned reaction, but apparently not when ... read more

Every year for the past 5 years, and not because it’s a holiday, not because it’s the Calgary Stampede, and not because the Calgary Flames won the Stanley Cup (heh), I can hear the “pop pop pop” of fireworks in the distance – AND if I climb on my roof, I can see some of those that shoot high into the air. What’s happening, you wonder? in the middle of August? u... read more

As we were driving from Great Falls to Calgary, we had planned an easy Interstate 15 trip all the way to the border. The day was beautiful and all was going great. About 15 minutes into the trip, we came upon construction and I15 became a very narrow 2 lane highway with no shoulder on the right and no center line. Just a little moment to really get one's attention. Babs was going along very well and I was admiring the beautiful mountain views and telling Bernadette how Blessed I felt when.....all of a sudden there was an orange construction sign that said "exit 35mph". I really don't remember a thought process at all, I quickly exited and Bernadette was as startled as I was ( did I say startled? I meant scared! and Leisel just ... read more

It’s hard to believe that just 2 weeks ago, the Calgary Stampede Grounds were under water, and this week, the Show actually went on!! Not that everything is back to normal, and it canNOT be forgotten that many are still displaced (especially in the nearby town of High River), and most are still trying to cope and recover.. But, happy sounds of laughter and shrieking children as they fly across the sky on some way-too-scary ride, and the dingalinging of games people play while they try to win the ultra-stuffed frog that they are then stuck carrying for the rest of the night, and bright shiny lights, and whiffs of donuts and cotton candy and caramel apples, and horses and cows … it all helps. As you may remember from u... read more

If you live in Alberta, or if you’ve been watching the news for Alberta, or if you’ve read my blog before, you will know that we just had a TERRIBLE disastrous flood here in Calgary (and many other places in Southern Alberta). The area around the Calgary Stampede Grounds was hard hit, and we thought that the Stampede was going to be a No-Go. At least, on the first couple of days. img=http://biggestballofstring.files.wordpress.com/2013/07/gavin-young-calgary-herald.jpg?w=300&h=193But then, the sun came out, and the water started to recede, and the Mayor and the City officials said, “Nope- the Show must go on”.. Not only is it good financially for the City, but it’s also great for morale. ... read more

I just want to announce: We survived! There’s a lot to deal with after The Flood, and Calgarians are responding in overwhelming ways! For example: early Monday morning, the url=http://www.calgary.ca/CSPS/Fire/Pages/Calgary-Emergency-Management-Agency/Calgary-Emergency-Management-Agency.aspx?redirect=/cemaCalgary Emergency Management Agency (CEMA) announced that they needed volunteers to meet at McMahon Stadium to hand out information packets to displaced people who would (eventually) be returning home. They expected around 600. Thanks to social media sites, around url=http://www.calgarysun.com/2013/06/24/call-for-flood-recovery-volunteers-sees-overwhelming-response-at-calgarys-mcmahon-stadium3,000 people had arrived by 10am, all ready with boots and gl... read more
