I THOUGHT I was going to write about Banff today - discussing our "Yukon Ho" trip. We were coming down the Icefields Parkway, till it met the Trans-Canada Highway, where we would go East, towards Lake Louise, Banff and Canmore, and finally, Calgary. However, instead, I want to talk about the Trans-Canada today. Actually, starting the day before yesterday, when it closed down, due to flooding and mudslides. Southern Alberta is under a State of Emergency. My city, Calgary, is under water, and it is TERRIBLE! TERRIBLE.The Police are strongly suggesting people stay home, the downtown core has been evacuated, as well as homes along the Bow River, which runs through Calgary. Around 100,000 people have been evacuated. url=htt... read more

It's funny how little time it takes for all of the negative aspects of a trip or memories to fall away. When I left Italy just a few short weeks ago, I was very ready to say good-bye and return to the comforts of Canada and to see all of my much missed family. I felt that I had gained all that I needed from the trip and seen what life had to offer there for me. Of course at the time I felt a sense of sadness at leaving those beautiful ancient canals and crumbling facades behind, but I was also so very excited to return to the familiarity of home. Well this morning a very strange thing happened, as I woke up I was for the first time surprised to find myself back in ... read more

June 3 Boston to Calgary. Loaded the car in pouring rain and had two-hour drive to Logan, arriving about 9 to find our flight to Montreal was delayed by an hour. Fortunately still made our connection and had time for Tim Horton's lunch before the long flight to Calgary. We had seats with TV screens on the Air Canada flight. Yay! Enjoyed the movie Parental Guidance (Billy Crystal, Bette Middler). After landing we drove about an hour down to High River, passing through a lot of prairie and the occasional dense townhouse developments which struck us as odd. About ten minutes west of High River we came to the Highwood Views B&B. The hostess Colleen greeted us in front of her modest-looking home and led us around to a rear entrance on the lower level. Hello all! I recently posted that I will be going to Mexico very shortly here, well, in addition to that, I'm also planning on going on another trip at the end of August. This trip will be another once-in-a-lifetime experience. For two weeks I will be spending time in Costa Rica and Nicaragua working with local doctors in remote villages to set up free mobile clinics, providing critical health care to those who live in poverty and are in need of health care. I won't be doing any surgeries or doing anything too crazy -I'm trying to help, NOT cause more problems :) Obviously, myself, and every other person on the trip, won't be administering any medications/ prescriptions without consulting with the doctor first! This trip is not cheap -I will say that much. Yes I ... read more

We have been in Calgary for a month now working. What a different life- the weather is all over the place and mostly cool, I am working indoors on a computer again, wearing shoes, and we live in a highrise downtown. A big change from Fort Pierce for sure! We have a marvelous apartment about three blocks south of Calgary's downtown center. We are on the 22nd floor facing WNW, but a little bit of our balcony wraps around so we can see the sunrise as well as having a perfect view of the sunset. We have a spectacular view of the mountains, and we are able to enjoy this view even after working long hours inside because darkness only falls around 10:30 pm here. After nightfall the city lights shine on us, and it's a ... read more

I'm baaaaaaaaaaaack :) and so incredibly over joyed to be here typing again. Not that I'm particularly great at writing, nor get ecstatic over writing, however, writing here can only mean one thing. . . . . . . . If you didn't guess by now ... Spoiler alert! It means I'm going on another trip!!!!!! I'm leaving for the trip in 29 and a half days, the day right after my (19th) birthday to be exact. Words truly cannot describe how much I've been missing Mexico and how excited I am to have the grand opportunity to go back! Originally I was only supposed to go for 2 weeks for a 'field study group trip' through my university, but later I figured, since I'll already be in Mexico I might as well go back to ... read more

Hi there everyone! So, I started this blog September 9, 2012, and had the goal of telling about some roadside attraction, a Big Ball of String sort of sight, every Wednesday and Sunday. Today (which is still Wednesday, where I live), is the first one I missed. I planned to talk about Boston, and I’m working on that particular blog. But, because of Series of Unfortunate Events, I haven’t finished, and I don’t want to rush it. I did consider trying to finish it tomorrow, but I’m not sure that the Series of Unfortunate Events will be over by tomorrow, so! Boston on Sunday! xoxoxoxox... read more

Notes from a Dug: The Beaches of Kovalam End of journey. Yesterday saw Deb and Janice leave the magic of our final Indian residence, the Surya Samudra in Kovalam. Situated about 100 feet up a rock face, our side by side cabins look out over the never-ending breakers that stretch forever to the West. This thirty cabin property on about 30 ocean front acres is yet another retreat from the never-ending waves of people and the forever mysteries of micro-commerce and subsistence living that form the ever-undulating backbone of this country. Much like the departure of Lisa & Anna, there is the sadness of separation that each leaving of our friends brings to both Terry and me. We are now the last of the original six still in India. With only another seven days left, we ... read more

Notes from a Dug: Munnar to Kochi to Backwaters We enter Day 2 of the India General Strike still sitting 6500 feet above sea level. Terry and Janice sign up for a mini-trek through parts of the tea plantation into which our hotel has been nestled. Deb is applying more Ayurvedic goop on to the pinched nerve in her foot. It seems to work like a hot damn. Mr. Dug, following the advice of the on-staff Ayurvedic doctor, gives his ankle a break and submits his head for an Ayurvedic massage. For thirty minutes he gets penetrating oil rubbed, poked, slapped and whapped into his skull. He leaves with his head doing a rag-doll flop from side to side and the inner workings of his brain at a full stop. Terry, in the meantime, is experiencing ... read more
