We landed in Dubai at 6am (local time) with a current temperature of approximately 30 deg C. The day just got hotter from there! Stepping outside of the front doors of the airport, was like walking into a tsunami heat wave. Before we could even blink we had a sea of random taxi drivers asking us where we wanted to go and trying to get us into their taxi. After a bit of banter we managed to bargain one of the taxi drivers down to a semi-reasonable price. So off we went to our new home for the next few days. I’m sure we still got ripped off, but the thought of getting in an air-conditioned taxi was far to inviting to worry about it any further. It was immediately apparent that driving styles were quite ... read more

After a much welcomed rest in our room, from our exhausting walk this morning, we received a call from reception to say that our tour guide for our ‘desert safari’ had arrived to pick us up. After a quick get-ready, we jumped in our white Toyota Land Cruiser, which we were soon to realise was pretty much the only kind of 4WD Dubai seems to know exists. It still surprises me that we managed to actually get thought the city, pick up the other people in our car and get to the meeting place out in the dunes without having a serious accident. I think someone forgot to tell that driver that he wasn’t driving on the sand dunes at this stage, and in fact, those are actually other cars on the road. It made the ... read more

Happy Birthday Dom!! On July 9th Dominic celebrated his 28th birthhday. Being in a new city, there were many different options for fun and exciting ways to celebrate, and I decided to make reservations for drinks at Dubai's most famous hotel, the Burj Al Arab. When we arrived, we were escorted in to the lobby and directed to the elevators that would take us up to the top floor and the Sky Bar. The lobby itself holds a huge fish tank and as you ride the elscalator up to the main level, there are fish and sea creatures swimming next to you. The hotel is very 'bling' with bright colours and everything made of gold. When we arrived at the Sky Bar, we were impressed with the view of the city below, but surprised with the ... read more

whoever thinks that bigger isn't better, should spend a bit of time in Dubai! heralded as where east meets west (although i have heard this about turkey as well?), Dubai is basically a man made mega-tropolis. one of the seven states (emirates) that makes up the united Arab emirates (UAE) and governed by the maktoum sheik family, Dubai occupies a plot of dry desert on the Persian gulf. 50 years ago, Dubai was mainly a small, quiet desert town with a lively fishing and pearl diving community. today, the city of 1.3 million is a mecca of modernity. glass skyscrapers, high-rise condos, shopping malls and first class resorts, golf courses, and beaches dominate the vast concrete sprawl. as a stop-over en-route from Johannesburg to Bangkok, i only had 22 hours to properly explore. initially, my plan ... read more

Hello England. Firstly I would like to inform everyone that whilst at Gatwick Airport prior to departure I proposed to my wonderful girlfriend Cat and she thankfully accepted (even with my new haircut!). I am so happy and look forward to returning home and having a fantastic future with her. Love you my baby. Well my first entry comes via Dubai Airport at 3.30am (get this its 36 degress here, at that time of night) and after not having much sleep I feel strange so please excuse the spelling, grammar and context in this writing. After leaving Cat at the airport sporting a new glittery ring I wandered off into the unknown. Firstly I sat in my allocated seat on the plane and was thrilled to see 2 empty seats next to me however after ... read more

(I added some pics to the Australia/Blue Mtn and the Kenya blogs.) We flew from Zanzibar to Dar es Salaam (capital of Tanzania) to Dubai, where we spent the night. I only got to see the city from a taxi, but it was interesting. It was around 95degrees and very humid when we got there at 11pm, and it peaks at 120 during the day. I took the lens cover off my camera to take a picture of the hotel and within 2 secs the lens was fogged over. The city boasts to have something like 15% of the world's cranes. The skyline is covered with them. I was glad to see the city, if only for 12hrs... ... read more

Dominic's entry: Hello! Dominic here. I hope you have all enjoyed reading Andrea's travels and news as much as I have. It has been a pleasure reading about all of the adventures which we have had together and the latest chapter in our new age travels is sure to be just as fun. When Andrea and I sat down with my parents a couple of months ago, to tell them that we were moving out to Dubai, we knew that Justin was considering a move to the Middle East. Shortly after Andrea randomly ended up at the Emirates interview, Justin found an opportunity to apply his communications skills and experience in a new role in Abu Dhabi. We had not seen each other for about a year, and luckily we both had meetings in town at ... read more

... read more

I haven’t got time at the moment to go through the dozens of photos I took in Thailand last week, most of them probably breech the guidelines set by this travel blog site anyway and I don’t want to be banned again, but in the meantime here is another morsel from Abu Dhabi. They really do cater for all tastes here, you want Pizza? Curry? Lebanese? Thai? Philipino? Nepalese? Fresh Baguettes? German Sausage? Absolutely no problem, downtown AUH has got it all. Sick of all the hassle of chewing? Sugar rotting your teeth? Well then get yourself down to Madinat Zayed and get some Butt Sweet goodness in you! Naturally I have thought up a load of orifice related establishments, but this is neither the time nor the place. Urethra Franklin Mint. There. I’ve said it ... read more
