We have just got back to our suite after meal in the Al Muntaha Restaurant on the 27th floor. Reached by panoramic express lift travelling at 6m per second- makes your ears pop. Meal exquisite, Paul had 1/2 dozen oysters 2 natural , 2 cooked with hollandase sauce, 2 with champagne jelly. I had quail wrapped in vine leaves with couscous. Followed by- Paul seabass with asparagus and salmon mousse, I had halibut baked in hay with wild rice. We had 3 types of bread with french butter/ cream cheese with black truffle, or olive oil and balsamic vinegar. We were too full for dessert so they brought us petit fours ... Back to suite for more wine and watching TV and chill out........ read more

The next plan of action was to go and spend a few hours relaxing in the spa. They have a mixed pool and spa for ladies only. The pool is an infinity pool surrounded by floor to ceiling glass walls, with jaccuzzi, steam room, sauna. Obligitory robes and fluffy slippers and of course all the toiletries are Hermes. Unfortunately as we were talking with our concierge for our floor who was confirming the reservation for this evenings meal Paul happened to ask about dress code. We knew he had to wear trousers- no jeans alllowed ans closed toe shoes but he did not know about the long sleeved shirt policy and all his shirts are short sleeved. He had to take a taxi to the shopping mall to buy a shirt. So I swam in the ... read more

with usual apologies for the mass email I send a HELLO! from Dubai. Now you all know about my obsession with cars and that beyond the cool calm stylish (cough, cough..) exterior lies the beating heart of a bevan*. so it was with great delight that I awoke this morning in the knowledge that I was going to find myself a rental car for the next few months. I had dreams of fields of shiney new cars in all shapes and sizes that I could browse through in the same way one might browse through Woolworths. Now, usually when buying a car I have a series of very important questions I need to ask: 1. does it have a roof? 2. what colour is it? 3. does it go really really fast? 4. are you sure ... read more

I am writing this from the Library of the Burg Al Arab whilst Paul is having a game of Pool by himself, more about that later. Saturday we left the pampered confines of our hotel and visited downtown Dubia in search of some culture. Taxi to the city, it is a bit like our Big Dig, construction everywhere. We visited Dubia Museum and had a stroll around the old town. Through Souks and alongside the creek. This place was nothing until the early 1900's when the ruler made the decision to allow foreign nationals to reside tax free here. It was a port for the many trade routes around the area trading in spices, pearls and gold. The black and white photos are amazing even until up to 1960- 70 this place was not very much ... read more

here in Dubia friday is their Sunday , strange but it actually felt like a Sunday on the beach and out and about which confused us no end. Spent the morning and afternoon on the beach, lazing around, having a dip in the pool, Paul hired a Boogie board for 1 hour. He looked so funny on it a bit like a fish on a bike, only joking. As Dubia is famous for it's shopping we thought we had better go and have a look. We left the beach early had afternoon tea, tasty finger sandwiches, bruchetta with caviar and smoked salmon, date scones with clotted cream and Assam tea, very civilised. Then off the the Mall. The Mall of the Emerates which also holds the Dubia Ski the indoor ski slope. It was so funny ... read more

Thursday was a day of contrasts we started in one of the wettest places in Dubia nad ended the day in the driest. The moring saw us in the Wild Wadi Water Park. Themed around Sinbad and Juha a mythical traveller. Both travelling across the seas and engulfed by a storm, survived and stranded in a beatiful lagoon. It is the most advanced technological water park in the world and has the tallest free fall slide outside of America. the Jumeriah Screamer and did I scream as I plunged 27 M hitting a top speed of 80K. I got to the bottom and couldn't move partially due to the fact that the seat of my costume had been forced between my buttocks and there was a great queue of people standing watching me lying there. After ... read more

in Dubia, following an uneventful flight. In fact I was not entirely impressed with Emerates Airways at all. Spent the longest 7 hours in the smallest seat it was so small there was no room to put the arm of the seat up as seats where so close to each other. Food fine , wine horrible I poured mine back into the bottle and gave it back - Chardonnay uggh. Time to have a sleep and as we where 11 rows from the front the light from the service area was shining into my eyes. I asked for an eye mask - they had none on board. I tried to slide down into the seat to avid light but they had a bulge- lumbar support and that pressed into my thoracic spine and became numb from ... read more

Had a very busy Wednesday. Firstly I had to decide where we wanted to lie on the beach. Got beach attendant to place bed so I could view the Burj when I turned my head to the right. Then I had to get the beach attendant to place towels on bed and strategically place towel to support back of head. Beach attendant brought us fruit skewers, came and cleaned our sunglasses, provided cold vanilla scented towles to keep us cool and sprayed our faces with Evian water. Then we went for a walk up the beach for a closer look at the Burj Al Arab. Came back and more friut skewers, sunglasses cleaning , spraying of face with Evian water and cold vanilla scented towels. Then I went for a swim in the pool looked over ... read more

How hot - in case your wondering - it's very hot, I'm not sure I’m going to actually write about Dubai as I might let the pictures do the talking about our favourite parts... Oh why not, when we arrived we didn't know where we were going to go so we jumped in a taxi and asked for a "cheap" hotel downtown, ha ha, as if there is such a thing as a cheap hotel in Dubai - so where do we end up - in a hotel/brothel, mmmmmmmmmm not exactly what I had in mind so the next morning we checked out and found some where without the assistance of a taxi driver... Our next hotel, which did not rent rooms out by the hour, did however have shuttle buses to the beach and to ... read more
