It is 7:40pm on Friday, April 27th. Now that is what you call up to date. I am sitting in area 3 of Dubai international airport six hours early for a flight. We’ve already been here for almost two hours. Even with a guaranteed late checkout thanks to our Starwood Gold membership and a trip the Deira souqs, we find ourselves here too early. I guess we could have tried to do more, but we’ve done everything we wanted to do (or could afford) in Dubai, and it’s time to go. Jumeirah Open Beach: So salty, you can’t drown Our lofty plans to get to the beach before sunrise do not materialize and the rays creep into our dark room signaling our failure. It’s all good, the beaches do not open until 8am anyway. We sign ... read more

A prelude to belly dancing Early in the morning, Lee gets me up because the Shakira in Dubai concert is on TV. I’m a huge fan and have gone to two of her concerts, but the Oral Fixation tour is the newest and I was not able to go last time (I was on my sub-internship at the time and was working hard to impress). I love watching her and singing along to her Spanish songs, and of course, I always love her belly dancing. I took up belly dancing after my first Shakira concert, but with classes and rotations, I could not keep it up. It was fun though. I’d like to do it again. Shakira’s moves would prove to be a prelude for the belly dancing we would see later. I had to work ... read more

I made my flight! So I have arrived in Hamburg from Rome just in time but I only have less than two hours to catch my other flight to Manila. It's not a connecting flight so I still have to check-in again but first I have to get my other baggage stocked in the airport for 4 days. Phydie and I had to really run from terminal two of Hamburg airport to terminal one and that was really not easy with our bags and my heavy baggage! Anyway, I didn't miss my flight and I'm off to Manila but it's still gonna be another long flight for me. The flight from Hamburg to Dubai was smooth. There were only a few passengers on board and I had three seats for my self! I got to lay ... read more

Just so you know, the phrase “The Great Imitator” has a medical significance that we’ve decided to leave out of this blog. The origin of the phrase is totally unrelated to Dubai, but I wanted to give it this title because Dubai creates a feeling that everything you can find in another part of the world can also be found here. Call it imitation, in a positive light. After all, if nature blessed Dubai with sand and sea, but not snow, what’s so wrong with using some human innovation to make some? Pinoy breakfast in Dubai The bright Dubai sun creeps into our hotel room early in the morning, and our thoughts are on what happened with the Manchester United - Milan UEFA semifinal game last night. It absolutely *sucks* (elegant word, I know) that we ... read more

GOLD! Unearthing Ibn Battuta’s Stash in Dubai Sleep is overrated anyway Before I start, let me say that there is no place in the world like Dubai. The goal of this city is to have it all: the biggest, baddest, largest, tallest, funnest, costliest, and any other superlative you can think of. It will have the world’s tallest building, the Burj Dubai, in a matter of years—it is predicted that this building will top the Taipei 101 in Taiwan (509 meters) by more than 200 meters. It has the world’s only 7-star hotel, the Burj Al Arab (although to be accurate, they appointed themselves a 7-star hotel but their real rating is 5-star luxury). The plan is to build the world’s largest mall, the world’s largest Disney Theme Park and Resort. They are building one of ... read more

Leaving Bangkok It is dark when we get up. We leave our room just as the sun rises, and our 17th floor hallway gives us a great view of the orange orb rising over a still sleepy Chao Praya River. We have little time to appreciate it though, so we jump into a cab and make it to Suvarnabhumi Airport with just enough baht (316, to be exact) left over to pay the driver and give him an almost decent tip. The rest of our baht has to be saved for our departure tax. Check-in is wonderfully easy at Cathay Pacific - we are back on our oneworld itinerary and the business class line. Aah, membership does have its privileges. We’ve got a little over two hours to kill at BKK, and a stop at Duty ... read more

Desert Safari Middle East » United Arab Emirates » Abu Dhabi By ChapoApril 22nd 2007Scott FINALLY OUT AND ABOUT!!! Well life is getting a little easier here with the new manager now in place and half the hotel off my hands. Delegations are slowing down and we only have a Queen and two Princesses in house at the moment! So I've had some time to start partying a bit and to see some sights. Went out to the desert the other day with some work mates to do some sand dune bashing. An interesting experience sliding sideways down a 60 foot high sand dune at full throttle! Then to a camp for a BBQ, belly dancing and of course some Shee... read more

Almost dropped it but I hate changing plans especially when it comes to travel so though might as well climb and come back the next day! Met Tejas at Abu dhabi and the pics will tell the rest..... Ever wondered how photography gets in your way of having fun on travel. I reached a point that I am having to conciously tell myself to put my camera inside my pack to really enjoy the moment. I mean it was one the m... read more

We finally managed to catch up with James in Dubai. It took us a little while to get it together ( which is really stupid when you consider that he is only about 20kms away in Sharajah). However we finally managed to catch up and had a fantastic time in the desert. The safari was amazing. Our driver Mohammed was insane. We would be driving at nearly 100kms across the sand and then we suddenly we'd be flying down a dune and then up another dune, and then sand would be flying all over the windscreen and the car would be drifting sideways down the dune (Mum you would have freaked - we could just imagine you getting out of the car and walking). There were a couple of moments when I thought he might have ... read more

It was my first time to visit Dubai by chance, because it was my boyfriend's business trip between 09Apr and 12Apr07 and since I work for an airline, then I bought myself a stand-by air-ticket (Emirates) to go along with him. We stayed at the 5* Crowne Plaza hotel and it's situated at the financial area, on the Sheikh Zayed Road. We managed to visit a few places in Dubai: Jumeirah Beach Park, Mall of Emirates, Ski Dubai, Dubai Museum, Souk Madinat Jumeirah, Gold Souk, Old Souk, Dubai Marina, Mercato (Shopping Mall), Deira City Centre (Shopping Mall) etc... The climate wasn't that bad in early April it is still bearable about 20-29 degrees. The main transportation is taxi. We basically took taxi everywhere! Since it is so cheap, it’s only few pounds each time! But ... read more
