Well the trip was begun for real now , and it has been a very interesting start. The farewell at the airport went well, and very quickly I was on the plane. Fate throws up interesting things now and again, but the person who was seated next to me was the perfect person at the perfect time. It was a guy from NZ, Connor. Basically he is where I want to be in 2 years. He has done my exact trip through the Middle East, including Alexandria, is also an Open Water Diver, has lived in London for 1 1/2 years, and was on his way to Melbourne for his brother's wedding. So I got heaps of tips about different places and just a general good vibe about the Middle East region. The flights themselves can ... read more

Dubai…. One of severn emirates, together making up the United Arab Emirates, formed in 1971. Prosperous, growing quickly, building everywhere. Including on land ‘manufactured’, by dredging from the sea bed to make islands off the coast. An international financial and trading centre, a meeting point between east and west, as indeed it has been over the centuries. Very ‘oil rich’ and it shows! We have travelled 21500 miles so far and are continuing our way westward, and should complete our circumnavigation next week. Here in Dubai we have three days to catch up and relax. Not being on business it is our intent to see and to shop, the latter being one reason for visiting this city. After a good nights sleep and some superb omlettes for breakfast (best ever anywhere) we head for the ... read more

With the UAE economy booming, evidence of money is everywhere. If its not an audacious tower block or leisure development then it's on the streets in the form of top end cars with blacked out windows and 3 digit plates, blinged and tweaked. Among the myriad of Range Rovers, Porsches, Lambourghinis, Rollers, Maybachs, Mercs, Hummers, Cadallacs, Beamers, Infinitys and Lexus..er..is, it is hard to make you ride stand out from the crowd. But these boys have got the cash to flash, and they are not frightened to stick on their motor. Apart from that, not much else to say, since Scott n Kat's blog has gone off the air, there's pretty poor viewing on these travel blogs. Have you had a look at any others on this site? Don't bother, it's all "Oooh, look at me, ... read more

I have just finished packing my bag and went to Etihad Airways office for an early check in. We were told that we can come for the 11 o'clock bus going to Abu Dhabi instead of coming as early as 10, which gives me extra half an hour of sleep:-) Hmmm...Although I'm feeling extremely tired and the dark circles around my eyes have become terrifyingly darker over the past two nights..I don't feel like sleeping at all! I can't stop thinking about the things I have to take, whether I forgot somthing, is everything in place, will things go smoothly during the flight, Uhhh....endless thoughts! Anyway, here's the plan as of today (it might all change once we actually arrive in Paris:-)) : Day 1: Arrive at 7pm, pick up from the airport and drop at ... read more

Day 54 - Sunday, March 11, 2007, Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE) I have been meaning to publish this webcam site for some time now. Unfortunately, your views while we are in port may not be so wonderful because we are in container ship areas most often. You can see our beautiful days at sea though. http://webcam.princess.com/webcam/QM_bridge.jpg We arrived in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, very early in the morning, around 4:30 am, on Sunday. We had moved our clocks back yet another hour so it was fairly easy to be up and awake to watch us sail in. It was a rather quiet and uneventful sail in--most likely because we arrived so very early in the morning. Dubai is another of the QM2’s maiden port calls. Our tour was scheduled for very early in the morning—7:15 ... read more

Well, where do I start. . . If you have read my last blog I mentioned that I was on a vessel literally stuck in port waiting to go and do the job. I think I also mentioned that the job will be finished relatively soon. How wrong I was! This really was the sequence of events that shaped my last 6 weeks offshore: The vessel some how managed to drag itself out of port and arrive at on dive location about 1 week late. No real surprise there. Once we were over location it was then that so many things went so terribly wrong. It first started with the weather, when it wouldn´t settle down and when it did the equipment started to fail, first with the diving bell (the device the divers get lowered ... read more

WOW!! Is Dubai ever clean and orderly... My journey from India here was quite an interesting one. The airport trek in Chennai wasn't a problem. I had managed to get 4 1/2 hours of sleep in the evening and my prepaid cab was there to get me at the allotted time. Granted it was an old TATA car with lots of rust and dings in the exterior and many rattles and clanks as we drove , but it did the job. The airport had a large and very comfortable lounge area so I was able to sleep a little more before boarding. The plane was full and I was the only Caucasian woman on board. One of the stewardesses , a youngish blond woman had been on the plane to India on Feb4 and she recognized ... read more
