Some may remember from a few blogs ago that I talked about a little yellow spring like fellow, called Modhesh, who is the mascot for the school holidays here in dubai (yes that is correct, they actually have a mascot for the school holidays - goodness only knows why). Anyway this little yellow guy is EVERYWHERE at the moment. Like totally everywhere. You can hardly move anywhere in the city without seeing him. And the malls are just crazy. Jeremy and I went to Times Square the other day and while we were there there was this enormous cacophony of noise. It sounded just like a brass band. And of course it turned out that it was a brass band, riding on chickens, dressed up as chefs! (Check out the photo - sorry it isn't very ... read more

We were into college the day after we arrived and had talks about basic things like accomodation, wages, uniform, fires and STDs!!!!! Then I had my first proper day training which started on Thursday and now its intense for 5 weeks........... Im in the first group so its a 5.30am (home 2.30am) wake up for me and I finish at 3.30 (12.30) so the days are long as there is so much to ... read more

So the Burj is booked solid today and tmrw..I was going to go for afternoon tea...they serve till 7pm..but sleeping in till 2pm didnt'help my booking request. They had one reservation at 8pm for the çhocholate fountain, however, that is too close to our departure time for India. I am very lucky to have access to the net at my fintger tips..Honerine's family here is wonderful. Auntie Diane has a daughter here in her mid twenties, so there is tons of product, cell phones, and a lap top at any time of the day. Oh well, I wanted to see the world's only 7 star Hotel, however they are bulinding another one in Abu Dabi, the Emrites Palalce or something..maybe I'll go there one day..apparantly there is tons more money there...crazy this middle east place. Well after our first attempt at this Wadi ended, in a dead end at the border, we figured that we would give it another try. So we gathered up another couple of kiwi couples and headed on out there on Friday morning. This time we were clever and took the Emirates Road up to Ras Al Khaimah instead of trying to fight our way through Sharjah and Ajman (getting lost in the process - see the wadi bashing entry). A smooth hour later ( in comparison to the 2.5 hours of the last attempt) we arrived at the border crossing and were met by the same border guard who turned us away last time. However this time all three cars had their passports and we were waved off (after a quick dash to the border patrols ... read more

Dubai Middle East » United Arab Emirates » Dubai By ChapoJuly 6th 2007ScottYes I'm here now and starting to settle in. Love my flat, much bigger than the last one and not in a ghetto... Can walk to some of the best shops around, surrounded by pubs and supermarkets. No more cabs everywhere! A lot hotter here though or atleast it feels that way. Was 49 in the sun yesterday, humidity is high... but loving it. Some photo's of my last few weeks in AD below. Keep in touch all, see ya later!... read more

Wow wow wow! I am speechless once again..figure of speech since I write so much..but it was absolutely breathtaking what I experienced today.....Keith and I were (Keith is one of Honerine's son's) picked up today in front of where we are staying by a land cruiser 4x4! Thank goodness again for the ac as standing outside is like having 100 blow dryers on high heat just aimed and you at full force. We were on our way to the middle of the desert but first we had to pick up some foreigners in the Jemeriah estates (very posh). I made my first faux pas as I sat in the front seat, I crossed my leg, showing the bottom of my foot, or shall I say, just your ordinary sitting position that any of us from the ... read more

Not sure exactly how to do this...I had some help in this insane cyber cafe...it tookabout an hour and a half! yikes..he sized them down and still..it was a very lenghty process...not sure why they all seem to be on only one of the blog sites..but that is not my biggest concern right now...I have to be home soon for pick up service to the sand dunes of the middle east..apparantly a 4 x 4 picks us up and drops us off at night..not bad here...and with my maid service who always has these delicous meals ready..I am quite content and grateful for my blessings...it's really hot out again...quelle suprise....I just cant' bring myself to cover up with long sleeves and the sort..I think I am sick due to the a/c...I actually leave stores and go ... read more

WOw...the heat today was quite brutal...about 46..but with the humidity...way more! I found out that there really isn't much to do in Dubai except eat and shop!...shop ...shop ...and shop! The amount of money in this place kills me...all made from oil...gas is like 60 cents a litre..from what we figured out....a/c is everywhere..the energy consumption here is enough for for all of Canada! They idle their cars, don't recycle, and waste like there is no tmrw! The amount of Gold is alos ludicrous! Muslim law reigns...but not for foreingers...things learned...how hands are chopped off...heads are chopped off..there is really no crime here...sheiks are a dime a dozen and that's because there are so many little kings marrying so many women. Malls here are the place to be..spending is a national passtime...women dress to the ... read more
