There are currently two road bridges connecting Abu Dhabi Island to the mainland UAE. Maqta Bridge is on the site if the original crossing point at the North of the channel where up until the early 60's you had to wait until low tide before taking your camel or Land Rover across. about two clicks to the South is the newer Musaffah Bridge (officially called the Al Ain Bridge but nobody calls it that). A third bridge just to the North of the Maqta Bridge is under construction but has been on hold for over two years now for reasons unknown to me. Both bridges are five lanes in each direction, and have 80kmh (50mph) speed limits on them. Maqta Bridge is actually two sperate bridges, each with a steel "suspension" style structure over it, whereas ... read more

16 November 2007. We left the car at the camping at Islamabad and found a taxi to the airport: the 4-week visit to South Africa to see our sons and to have a break from travelling had started. Flying is not something you can dwell on extensively. The most remarkable experience was the 8-hour stopover in Abu Dhabi. Not so much the waiting and lack of proper conveniences as well as the construction of the International flight hall. It is a large shopping centre cum waiting room. There are only chairs to sit in, not to lie on, hence my remark about the lack of conveniences. But the way it is constructed - and finished - deserves a remark. The ground floor houses shops, restaurants and other niceties all along the outer walls. In the centre ... read more

OK, so now that I have a bit of time free I thought I would actually take the time to update you all as to my most recent crusades, which is really not much. So the last time you heard from me I was in France having a ball of a time. Since then I have started my 'new' job at the same company, where I am now based onshore as opposed to offshore. But as things work out, I have been spending a lot of time offshore. October brought about heap of rig moves. That pretty much sums that month up really. After completing one I was moved onto the next and so forth. The final one brought about a bit of disaster. The process goes once the rig is moved into place and the ... read more

I'm just sitting in my office going through my email when "clonk". The power trips out. We were getting power cuts during the heat of the summer when all of the air conditioning units were working hard, but it's only about 32C today and low humidity. It was the smell of burnt fur/meat that alerted us to the cause of the trip. Luckily I was there to deal with the situation, and by "deal with" I mean "get somebody to clean the electrically exploded rat out of junction box". I'm just glad I can share some of the glamour of life in the Gulf with you. PS - Thanks to everyone who emailed to let me know that the zombie-virus laden meteor that hit Peru last month was probably just a pocket of naturally occurring methane ... read more

Well we have just returned from a stay at the Danat Resort at Jebel Dhanna for Eid.Our arrival was not the most auspicious as we were overlooked by the check in staff initially and were not served a welcome beverage as other guests were that we observed. And then further on into our stay we had the misfortune of a couple of bad encounters with other staff members. Chelle had booked herself in for a spa treatment and when she presented myself at the spa at the appointed time she was informed that the room that they would be using for my treatment had been given over to a massage and could I please come back again later on for my treatment. She was most surprised at this as she had booked my treatment 6 hours ... read more

With the departure of my guests on Thursday morning and Shez still being in the UK, it's given me the opportunity to catch up on the latest crop of zombie/horror films. Shez doesn't like them, but I do, and Prakash down at "Mona Lisa Video Rentals" has always got a good stock of DVDs. At less than 40p a rental I am not too worried if the odd movie is a bit of a dud. When watching these films where people are in peril, I can't help thinking that most of the time it is their own fault that they are in the predicament in they are in, and in many cases they could have prevented a great deal of pain and emotional stress by taking a different course of action or even basic preparation. I ... read more

It has been close to a month now since my last blog and it has really flown by despite being in the office most of the time. I am currently smack bang in between the UAE and Qatar on a job where we are drilling some holes to find out what is underneath the seabed to extend a runway on a small island close by. Now today has been a very eventful one (compared to the last 2 weeks of nothing happening) as first some scanning equipment that is pretty crucial in the operation of this job just decided to die on me after working 20min beforehand. That left me a little annoyed as it held back us throwing down the 20 tonne anchors. That took up a few hours but the most exciting part of ... read more

Well, Preparations are starting for the move to Abu Dhabi. At the moment I am trying to figure out what vaccines I need before I go. The fun and games of it all, there are different websites giving me different information but I suppose research and talking to the doctors will bring it all into the light!!! I'm hoping to get the whole UAE covered in my time over there, and some of other parts of the world. All very ambitious I suppose, seeing as I'll probably be spending the first month sitting on the air con as a result of the heat. I have expectations that the heat is going to render me useless until I can get used to it. But here we go with the preparations! Good luck vaccinations. ... read more
