After asking around a bit, reading up on our travel book and gauging our time, we decided to make Fethiye the next stop in our Turkey tour. We caught a mid-morning dolmus out of Olympos and up to the local bus stop where we jumped onto another dolmus for the 5 hour ride up the Mediterranean to Fethiye. Once again, the ride was gorgeous, and, being well rested, we were able to sit back, relax and take in the scenery. The road curved along the coast revealing tiny coves, ruins mounted on craggy hills, and deep blue waters. Our arrival into Fethiye came quick and painlessly, and, once we got our bearings, we called up a recommended hostel that had a free pick-up service. It was obvious straight away that this town was “built” for tourism ... read more

Yet another beautiful place in Turkey! They just keep coming... On the way along the Mediterranean coast, we stopped for lunch at Kas, my first real Med seaside town. It had all the stereotypical ingredients, turquoise water, sloping tree-covered hills, a marina, red-rooved white plaster buildings and lots of flowers and plants. Bliss. Here I purchased my obligatory evil-eye pendant to scare away the evil spirits so between that and my St Christopher (thanks Michele) I should have no problems from here on in! Passing the border between the Med and the Aegean Sea was definitely more theory than a noticeable change. They are both beautiful turquoise and clear waters, so inviting. Apparently the word tuquoise actually comes from here as a description of the water. I don't know if that's true, but it's a good ... read more

After breakfast and a walk around town we hit the road. We reached Fethiye, Turkey around 5pm. This was a surprisingly great little town. At first sight we thought there was nothing there and nearly got back on the road for the next town. Then Al spotted a sign that pointed in the direction of the waterfront. Once again, we are ahead of the tourist season by a few weeks so we had a great little hotel right on the water all to ourselves. To top it all off we found a Turkish bath on the other side of town who would come pick us up at our hotel and bring us back after we were done. A great spot on the beach, a couple hours of pampering and then some good Turkish food back at ... read more

Let's begin wıth the positives. If someone had asked me, on leaving Europe, who were the most endearing people we have come across this year, it would be a close contest. The Argentinians came out of the blocks, the Greeks were competitive, Albanian police got a guernsey. The gold medalists for me were gererally the French, particularly while the women who work ın boulangeries maintain that almost ıntangible demeanour I found so engaging. Now, sorry France, it's time to stand aside and hand the yellow shirt over to the Turks. These people extend the welcome mat way above and beyond the call of duty. The food? An absolute treat - baclava desserts delivered on pushbike my personal favourite, gözleme - savoury turkısh pancake, a close second. The sights? Heading south from Selçuk, we first hit a ... read more

Not the best pıctures as my camera memory card ıs full so we used the camera that I cannot download photos from. You wıll all see them when we get home. We left Selcuk and took a long and wındey bus trıp throught the mountaıns to the medıterranean sea and fethıye. Just as we arrıved ın town the mother of all storms hıt us and we spent the best 10 bucks of the trıp on a cab to the hotel. I mean ıt was 5:00 pm and totally dark because of the clouds. The power went out just as we got to the hotel too. It only lasted for an hour or so then we had a nıce dınner ın town. The next day we set out on our three day tour on a gullett boat. ... read more

It is hard to put into words what we have just experienced in the last six days in Turkey. We took the fast ferry (supposed to be 45 minutes and turned into almost 2 hours) from Rhodes to Marmaris but that is Turkey time. Trevor has extremely fond memories of Turkey and from minute one, it lived up to its billing (after conferring with Marla, that should be reputation, not billing). Well, almost from minute one - that is after we re-mortgaged the house to actually enter the country. If one is coming to Turkey, be prepared to pay for the experience. We paid 125 Euros for the ferry ($190 Can.), but then there was a port tax to leave Greece (another $100 Euros for the family - $150 Can.). We bit the bullet and felt ... read more

The night bus from Cappadocia to Fethye took 14 hours but Turkey's bus system is impressive, comfortable, clean and on time. Greyhound could make a study tour. They even serve tea and snacks, have fold down tables and movies on Mercedes ·Benz made buses. Southern Turkey as you near the coast is mountainous, major passes and mountains with snow, deep valleys with orchards, vegetales, grennhouse tomatoes, a very rich area resource wise. Fethye must be a mad house starting in April, with a harbor full of cruise sailboats and working fishing boats, b ut in winter it is refreshing. We climbed to a nearby abandoned Greek village, one of many that were deserted during the exchange of Greek and Turkish folk earlier in the 20th century. WQe then hiked over a ridge and down to the ... read more

We are now on the coast after a busy few days. We have spent the last few days workıng our way along the turquıose coast whıch ıs so called because of the colour of the water. It ıs lovely and very ıdyllıc. We have been swımmıng today and yesterday. The water ıs really warm and the beaches are very quıte as we are out of season. Today we went on a walk from Kaya to Ölüdenız. Kaya ıs a ghost town that used to be a Greek town whıch was emptıed ın the 1920's when they decıded to make all the Greeks go back to Greece and all the Turks come back to Turkey. It has remaıned empty ever sınce. The path took us through the town and then along the coast untıl we reached Ölüdenız. ... read more
