We then headed to Fethiye for two nights to celebrate Em's birthday!! We were able to explore the nearby Ghost town which was abandoned by the Greek people after the fall of the Otoman Rule and the turkish people who moved into the area did not inhabit the area. Theres all the old building just left to crumble.. it's pretty creepy! we were also able to climb up to a point where we could look over the Mediterranean sea.. so beautiful! After this we went to a turkish bath and got a good scrub down! ... read more

The beautiful Aegean coastal town of Fethiye on our next stop. Warm weather and cheap wine, even found a pension that gave us a full kitchen to cook in, excellent! Went to the market and bought like 8 kg of fruits and veggies!... read more

Oludeniz; land of the Paragliders, of course we had to do it! We set off at half eight in the morning and tore around cliff edges in a Landrover, it was alarming to say the least. We arrived, unpacked and promptly took off, each with an experienced glider. We had to run as fast as we could down a hill to get the lift. I have some videos but they don't work at the moment. The ride was very peaceful, stress free and rather slow. A great experience though and what a view! ... read more

After our few days of site seeing it was time to do something different, so we drove to Oludeniz, just past the fishing village of Fethiye. Full of English tourists it was different....anyway, it was nice to lay here for a few days and catch some sun on the beach. Oludeniz is a hot sky sport destination and people come from all over the world to launch of Mt. Baba at 2000m. Endless streams of paragliders would float through the sky and down to the beach A few times we saw them get tangled in their parachutes (doing stunts) and fall, unable to do anything about it, and fall into the sea like a dead weight. The sea rescue would then go as fast as they could to save them! We had a lazy few days ... read more

Dan convinced me and Arielle to travel with him through Southwestern Turkey for the last 4 days before school started. I didn't get back until 11 this morning, accidentally missing my first class of the semester. Oh well, the professor emailed me and said I didn't miss anything, and that we didn't have our first real day of class for two weeks. Hah. The adventure was absolutely amazing. Me and Dan and Ari are total besties now, and I had amazing experiences. All for under 300 lira. Picture and video documentation forthcoming. Excerpt from email explaining the trip: I am in a place called George House, above Butterfly Valley on the Mediterranean coast of Turkey near the town of Fethiye. Butterfly Valley is a small gorge with a pristine beach and a waterfall, amongst other things. ... read more

Fez Bus: Sector 4 - Koycegiz to Fethiye The next day was very exciting and started with yet another sales room - this time carpets. Frist they showed us how they get the silk from the worms and then how each carpet is hand woven - some taking 4 years to complete and comprising 400 knots per square inch - mad! Then there was a long demonstration in the show room where about 6 staff threw carpets around and let us walk on them - they were lovely. Once again, being handmade they were massively expensive - starting about £1,000 for a welcome mat sized rug - and some actually cost more than my house so why they were bringing Fez Busers there is beyond me. Surprisingly no one bought anything, again. We then headed to ... read more

OK, a little late, but thought I might bring you up to date on more of that Turkey trip in 2008 (oops)!! After the dry inland of Cappadocia it was off for a little coastal adventure of a 4 day trip on a Turkish Gulet. First was south on an overnight bus to Olympos (not something I'll repeat if I can help it!). Olympos is not only an ancient site, but also a rocky beach overlooking the blue and green waters of the Mediterranean which we used to stop and find a boat to get us from Demre to Fetiye along the coast. We also had a side trip up the hill to see the famous Chimeras, pockets of natural gas alight on a hill. My advice, take a cold drink for the top - a ... read more

I mentioned before that the Turks like to travel in style and I can report that this extends to the bus companies too. Mercedes Benz appears to have had a field day here with almost all the bus companies using new luxury air conditioned Mercedes Benz coaches. I guess it’s a kind of arms race – first one company ups the ante by buying a luxury coach and soon all the others have to do the same to compete. You get a comfortable reclining seat and shortly after departure complementary refreshments are served (water, coffee, tea, cola, cake, biscuits) and again several times during the trip. As we headed south I watched the outside temperature on the onboard thermometer steadily increase … 28 – 30 – 32 –34 – 37 degrees. It certainly made you feel ... read more
