Tuesday 4th June: time to leave idyllic Cirali and head for Fethiye, our last stop. We left the hotel at 11am and drove back to Kas 80miles/127 kms along the very scenic coast road, which for most of the way is along the base of the mountains and right alongside the sea. We stopped at the Sardunya/Andifli Hotel, where we had stayed previously, for a very pleasant lunch on the terrace overlooking the bay; and it was also good to be warmly welcomed by the very nice staff there. Then back to the car for the second leg of the journey, 67miles/107 kms to Fethiye. This was the same road that we travelled ... read more

14 May Arrived in Fethiye, on the South coast of Turkey, found a pension at the end of town overlooking the marina, stunning views from the terrace. Great for breakfast and drinks! Went downtown to the Fish Market for dinner. You choose your seafood from the cabinet, then the nearby restaurant cook it for you and add salad etc. We shared prawns and seabass, with a great lemon and garlic sauce. 15 May Set out on a walk, went to see the Rock tombs in the cliffs near the town, Robyn and I watched the ladies sitting under the tree making flatbread which we sampled, delicious! Trudged over the hill to Kayakoy, lost Ian and Robyn on the way (long story) - couldn't find them, found out later there were 2 bus stops in Kayakoy and ... read more

The Ceremony We spent a few lazy days at the hotel with no farm work. We just enjoyed the sun, wandered around Fethiye and relaxed by the pool. On one of the evenings, a ceremony was held in the town center to "open" the brand new promenade and seaside area, as well as unveil the Atatürk statue on the new town square. Quite a few people showed up to hear the mayor's speech (which of course I couldn't understand) and watch the dramatic unveiling of Turkey's favorite politician and national hero, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. A traditional marching band accompanied the event with rythmic turkish traditional music. It was an interesting experience. 12 Islands The next day, my fellow American helper and I decided to make use of the wonderful weather by going on one of the ... read more

Bus ride from Istanbul It was really easy to get a bus ticket from Istanbul to Fethiye. I already knew there was a nightbus with a company called Metro. I just asked around in a few of the many tourist offices in the Sultanahmet area until I got directed to an office caled TourIsta. They among a few others sold bus tickets for that company. I got to choose my seat and it cost me 65 TL. I pre-purchased the ticket, but as soon as I got to the central bus station in Bayranpasa (Otogar Metro station) I realized I could have just bought it there. We left the bus station at 9 p.m. sharp. After picking up more people in the many suburbs of Istanbul we finally started the trip down south. By then it ... read more

We woke up with no alarm today! It was amazing! Another average breakie but the bread was fresh which was a bonus! We fed up put our togs on and off we ventured! We had been told we were on the bus for a hour or so heading to a big gorge to do a bit of a hike through the water and rocks with the option to raft if we wanted. When we arrived we fell in love with the area. It was so so pretty with huge mountains and rocks and a whooshing river running through it. So we decided to pay the 30 lira and go rafting for an hour. We had no idea what to expect but they gave us these lil shoes, an oar and a tube and pushed us into ... read more
