Having followed the Turkish coastline for over a thousand kilometres since leavıng Istanbul, I finally arrived back in Fethiye - the seaside town that had sparked my love affair wıth Turkey one year ago. Upon checking into my hostel it should have come as no surprise that two of my roommates were Rich and Ryan - the same two Aussie lads I had already bumped into in Eecabat and again in Selçuk - as there is a definate 'east coast Australia' effect going on in Turkey, by which I mean that the vast majority of backpackers seem to be following the same route and stopping off at the same half-dozen-or-so places in much the same way as the 'backpacker super-highway' that exists between Sydney and Cairns in Australia. Nevertheless it was cool seeing the guys again ... read more

Fethiye is where I had hoped to have a go at tandem paragliding, it is one of the best locations for paragliding in the would and such a picturesque spot Fethiye is also another pretty seaside location which is the destination of many travellers from England on package tours. So it was interesting to see Fish and Chips advertised outside the restaurants. The bus trip to Fethiye was interesting we passed through acres and acres of glass and plastic glasshouses. Now I see from where all those lovely tomatoes and cucumbers we have been eating came from. We booked to stay at the Fethiye Guest house, after getting on the Dolmus and telling the driver where we were going once again we were still on the bus, everyone else had got off and our driver didn't ... read more

I got up this morning feeling better than yesterday, but still feeling pretty crappy. I had some yogurt for breakfast, then we checked out of Hotel Linda and began our drive to Fethiye, on the Aegean coast. Susan packed up for me as I wasn't up to it. Our first stop was Xanthos, another ancient ruin. Xanthos was once the capital city of the Lycian Federation, and contains many sarcophagi. There were very few other people at this site, so it was quite peaceful. However, it was extremely hot here and I wasn't feeling well at all so I didn't take the interest I usually would in an amazing place like this. It is an UNESCO World Heritage Site, settled in the 8th C BCE. We made a few stops for photos on our way to ... read more

Fethiye is a pretty great base for explorations around the the Aegean coast. There are a bunch of things that can be done as day trips or overnights. I stayed at a nice pension Yildirim's in Fethiye and would stay there again. The facilities are not 100% brilliant, but the people that I met there were quite nice and the city of Fethiye itself is quite pleasant, even though there isn't too much to do. It is right on the water, so that adds quite a lot of ambiance to the city. When I arrived there were two other guys in the dorm, and the first night we had a quiet night. We awoke for a Turkish breakfast, after which I took a minibus to Kayakoy. My plan was to hike from Kayakoy over the neighboring ... read more

After breakfast we got picked up and were taken down to the waterfront where we got on our boat for the day cruise. It was a 12 Island Cruise, which actually only went to about 5 Islands, but in each one we stopped and got to jump off the boat and swim and explore the islands. They were all uninhabited islands so they were nice and quiet. One of them had a rope swing which we could swing off into the water, and another was called Aquarium Bay, which had water so clear that you could see your feet at the bottom. We got served another BBQ lunch which was nice. After our 5th and final stop and swim we headed back to Fethiye where we had gotten on in the morning. We had a quick ... read more

Well we have been very much looking forward to arriving in Fetihye, number one because we are here for three nights without having to change hotels and number two because our guide was leaving for a couple of days to visit his family. Don't get us wrong, he was a very nice man, however by this point he is starting to get on our nerves somewhat, and although we were looking forward to some time by ourselves it would have been nice if he had given us some more info about the local area rather than dumping us at the hotel reception. Oh well at least he left us with our driver, Suleyman, who although he could not speak much english he was the nicest guy we had met in Turkey so far. It was also ... read more

Finally a Day for relaxing! We didn’t have anything planned for the day so we just did what we felt like doing. Which turned out to be exploring the town of Fethiye and then swimming in the Mediterranean sea afterwards. Hasan was very nice and drove us into town (he had to get the heater in the bus fixed because it kept on blowing out hot air and we couldn’t turn it off, so he drove us in before taking the bus to the shop). We then lazily wandered around the town, I wanted to buy a dress but nothing was striking my fancy. Steph is obsessed with the “happy pants” (they are Turkish pants that are baggy and tapered at your ankles, but the actual crotch of the pants hangs down very low, and the ... read more

We drove to Fethiye and on the way we stopped at Turkey’s second largest canyon, Saklikent Gorge. We get to the Gorge and we had a few options of what we could do. I decided to opt out of tubing down the freezing cold rapids that come from the mountain and instead we (Dora, Fatih, and Hasan who also didn’t go) lounged in a shaded lounge right on the river and drank cay. There was also a little mini waterfall right behind me, I felt like a queen! (I stuck my toes in the water and it was freezing! I am glad I made the decision I did!) Not long after we were sitting down, the others who were tubing floated past us, they were in for a treat as there is a mud bath at ... read more

A little bit further along the coast to Olu Deniz (literally Dead Sea - another one!) Bowling night and then boat trip the next day to Blue Cavern, Butterfly Valley, Cold Spring Water, Camel Beach, Aquariam Bay, at St. Nicholas Beach. Rainy but warm enough evening with a barbaque back at the campsite and then we leave the coast much too soon for my liking! ... read more
