Hey, So I must apoligize for my lack of contact... internet has been very difficult to get my hands on and the time to use it even more so. Yesterday we played tourist and spent the day at the Dead Sea. It was incredible! The sensation is unlike anything else. We first arrived at this semi-resort that is frequented by tourists but mostly Middle Eastern tourists. It had a couple swimming pools and a private section of beach and showers... stuff we didn't need but it made it all easier. I think the place was named (oh so original!) "The Dead Sea Spa." After establishing ourselves on a couple chairs we headed down to the beach. The sand was incredibly hot and those few who forgot sandels had fried feet by the end of it. ... read more

Moving on Jordanian time has dominated my mentality. Everything that is planned could easily change at absolutely any moment. It's a wonderful lesson in patience. The presentations have been good although the turn out has been questionable. Already we have much intrest in students here who want to start a branch of Amnesty International. Great! As long as we change one perspective we've made a difference. We've also met some incredible people. Last night we celebrated Jude (my Jordanian coyear)'s birthday at her house. Her mother made a traditional Jordanian sweet whose name I can't remember. It was made of orange cheese and cream cheese and combined savory and sweet in a weird way. It was very good though. Tomorrow we hopefully go to the dead sea. It hasn't been hot at all yet but ... read more

Hey all! I am currently sitting in the computer lab at the New York Institute of Technology. Not in New York though... the "posh" school here in Amman must be a branch... I've yet to figure that out. This uni will be the basis for our presentations here in Amman. Five other University students are scheduled to bring around 50 students each day here. My flight was very good considering how long it was. I met up with three of my friends in Istanbul and we all arrived together in Amman Airport at 2am. Customs was smooth and all my luggage made it safely. Above the customs desks was a large sign announcing the presence of the "Tourist Police" in both Arabic and English. We met up immediatly with Bashar who is our organizer here ... read more

It's late now and I'm tired. -Malia... read more

Canada day this year was much fun! We left the hotel at Petra early in the morning and drove to Wadi Rum, home of the local tribes. We took jeeps out into the desert and drove around, all over and up over sand dunes. Much better then a Disney ride. Much weaving happened and 360's. We visited a cave where part of the new Indiana Jones movie was filmed, and had cave drawing in it from the Neolithic age. Wadi Rum was just amazing, just you the sand and the mountains. Once again pictures will be added soon. Then we continued on to Aqaba where three of us had quite the adventure trying to get around. We wanted to visit an aquarium and our taxi driver neither spoke English nor knew of the aquarium. Once we ... read more

So here we are at the famous Petra. It was just amazing to see in full. The city its self goes on and on. It took all day to walk around. The Most famous building, the treasury, is only one small part of the place. There are many place to climb to and amazing buildings to see. Not to mention the funniest camels and donkeys that you can pay to take you up the mountains. I decided to walk, I am in much better shape now and it was quite an enjoyable hike. At The Top the view went on forever. I will add tons of photos soon... read more

ABQ to AMMANReevesMy loyal blog readers and lovely benefactors, I am now 24 hours away from the beginning of my long journey. With my internal frame backpack stuffed with inconspicuous clothing and a hair dryer (they say that going outside with wet hair in Jordan is inviting sexual relations :o ), I will depart Taos tomorrow morning to catch a noonish flight. So begins my intense ABQ-Chicago-London-Istanbul-Amman trip; over 30 hours of the recirculated airport air. Whoo hoo! A little background info for those of you reading this with raised eyebrows: From June 29th to July 23rd I will be traveling minus the family through the Kingdom of Jordan. The trip is what we UWC students call a summer project. There are several of these projects organized for this summer heading to all regions of the ... read more

Country of the Hashimite Kingdom (which means the kings are direct descendants of Prophet Muhammad), Jordan is richer and more orderly than Egypt. With phosphate and cement export, mostly to China, and aids from US for its important role in Middle East peace process, Jordanian economy is very strong. 1 USD = .7 Jordanian Dinar. Jordan's strengths is also visible in its work force. Egyptians, Philippians, and Africans fill most of the service jobs here. Day 13 - Wadi Rum Wadi means valley in Arabic. This is a well preserved national park, with landscapes resembling that of Utah and Colorado. It also contains many TH Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia) sites, such as the valley where the Arab army camped when fighting the Ottomans in the Arab revolt during WWI, the mountain range he named 7 ... read more

Petra. Wow.

Each moring we get up at 5am to be on site at 5:30am. We start out by going over the goals for the day. To get into my square we travel down some stone steps and then down across three suporting walls. It is around 6 metres into the ground. We haul rocks and take soil samples for each new level we uncover. Today we came down on an almost intacted vase from the Iron Age. Pretty amazing. However while cleaning around the vase and other pottery sherds I dropped a rock on my pinky finger, and automatically pulled it out. When I took it out it was bleeding pretty bad and as my team lead was wrapping it up she let me know that it might be broken. The pain was acute. So now ... read more
