Well, as it turns out (as of now) the University of Jordan doesn't allow their wireless users onto any email websites. Thankfully this internet cafe is close enough that I can get out and do my thing. Ramadan began this morning, no eating/drinking/chewing gum in public from dawn until nightfall. It is an incredible sacrifice that these people all make. It is 100 degrees here and they go for 16 hours without any water... for a month! It really is impressive. The program here is really great, the kids are a lot of fun and most of them are pretty cool. A lot of people are kinda similar to me... politically interested and historically knowledgable. It makes discussions quite interesting and rewarding... as lame as that sounds hahaha. My apartment is huge! its maybe a 5 ... read more

Well, this past week has been somewhat uneventful. No major disasters, thankfully! The first two days of school were good, although it's tough to adjust to being in school again. Friday, our first day off, was like a breath of fresh air. I slept in, watched a movie, and then went to bake a fresh peach and blueberry cobbler. Got everything ready, turned on the oven, and went to simmer the peaches when the gas wouldn't light. We had run out of gas. So i changed the tank, which also ran out of gas after about a minute. So we talked to our landlord, who gave us the name of a guy could come fill our tanks for us. My unbaked cobbler went into the fridge. Christina and I then headed off to Starbucks to study ... read more

Initially, we were considering heading back into Petra early in the morning before getting the bus up north. But our feet were killing us due to a full day of walking the day before (my blisters from Kili still haven't gone away), and waking up at 7 am was a lot less of a good idea once the time actually came. We also managed to see everything in Petra on the first day sans a hike to the top of a cliff that overlooks the Treasury. So we slept in and then went down to the bus station. We found out there was no bus that goes directly to the Dead Sea, so instead we booked a bus to Amman and were told to get off near some airport in the middle of nowhere, get to ... read more

Today was a pretty big day for me - it was my first day at Kelsey! Classes started at 8.15, so I had to be up early. Not so much fun.... But we got there, and Mark, the director, sat everyone down for a little assembly to talk over the rules and make sure everybody knew where we were going. After that, we headed to our separate classrooms. The class you're assigned to stays in the same room and with the same people for classes, with only the teachers changing. Nellie, my first hour teacher, launched right into a lesson on patterns and pronunciation. We had a 10 minute break between 1st and 2nd hour, so we used that time to start learning each others names, and got contact info in case one of us missed ... read more

If you haven't already done so, you should all go see the video I posted with the last entry, which will show you around the apartment! OK, so every building here has a water tank that only fills up once a week, and you have to be careful not to run out of water before then, otherwise you can't flush the toilet or brush your teeth or do anything else that requires water. Wednesday, today, is our water day. So we scrub down the apartment and do all the laundry on Wednesdays. Or so we thought. Now, I just got my new mattress yesterday, so when I say I was sleeping, I mean I was passed out cold. When I finally woke up, I see Christina, my roommate, looking a little stressed out in the next ... read more

... read more

It's hard to believe I've only been here for three days, it's been such a whirlwind. So let's start at the beginning. August 5th - I headed off to the airport, and after finally finding the right terminal, discovered that I had one bag too many, and that bag would cost me nearly $1000 in excess weight to bring with me. So I left it in London, and I'm still trying to figure out how to get it here. My plane was delayed almost an hour, but once we boarded, everything went smoothly. We flew over the Alps, which was breathtaking, especially because it was right at sunset, and the light was reflected off of the snow. Got into Amman at quarter to 1 in the morning, got my visa, and met Rob, who would be ... read more

July 25/26 So made it safely to the Heathrow Airport and made my flight to go seeeee DIALAAAA!!!! HABIBIIII!!!! (means “my love” in Arabic) yaaayyy no troubles at the airport and even saw my first camel along the side of the road! Woohooo Met Diala’s mom, dad, older brother, sister and aunts…Her brother, Isam, actually went to Marquette and her sister, Jumana, went to Macalester—what a small world! Then went out and met Diala’s buddies...everyone has been sooo nice so far! Next day, Diala’s friend, Mees, who actually goes to UBC too invited all his friends over for a traditional Palestinian meal. He is Palestinian and his parents are strict muslims so it was cool and interesting to talk with them and experience a traditional meal in their home. They asked if this was my first ... read more
