Last night I arrived in Jordan around 7pm. The process of getting into the country was easier than it was to get into Cairo for my layover! We arrived and got our visas, then our bags, and then headed to security. After we went through security, we found our taxi which was waiting for us with a sign in a sea of taxi drivers! We drove through Amman to arrive at ACOR (American Center of Research) where students and archeologist from American can stay at a cheap rate. Upon arriving, we unpacked and met up with other members of our group. I am staying in an apartment with 3 other girls. We got lucky for we got one of the larger apartment suites. We have a living room, dining room, a kitchenette, bathroom, and 2 bedrooms. ... read more

Well it has been a long time since the last post. Work has been totally frantic with Chelle travelling to London, Madrid, Bahrain and Oman. In fact during the month of April Chelle spent more time out of Dubai than she did in it. Luckily however on April 30th Chelle and Dave jet setted out (business class) on Emirates to head for 6 days holiday in Jordan. Heaven! Our limo arrived nice and early in the morning (5:30am) for our 7:30am departure to Amman. Business class as always was just lovely. Although our plane was rather old we still had a good time. The airport in Amman (capital of Jordan) wasn't the flashest place in the world. The visa process was a little tricky with us having to go to one counter and pay some money ... read more

Swimming in the Dead Sea is a very weird experience... I'd heard about the floatiness, and it really is like that. But not just floaty, you actually cannot get yourself around like normal in water, to get upright you have to manouvre yourself into the right spot. And boy does that salt sting! I thought I should taste is since I was there so I stuck my tounge in. Bad move - I don't recommend it! Metallic and oh so salty, yuck! The dribble of freshwater to rinse off afterwards was welcome - there were a few swimmers who found out that shaving and waxing the day before does not pay off... ouch. The rocky back road we took to get there was also fun, having to do three point turns to get round steep bends ... read more

Okay…so I’ve been a bit of letdown since my last blog in November. After my adventure-filled tour through the Himalayas I pretty much put the brakes on traveling for a while. So much walking, so many new stories, so many new photos left me a bit exhausted from constantly tending to my precious little travel blog. I returned to India after Bhutan, moved into my friend Angad’s home once again and settled down. His cousin was getting married, I had lots of small things to keep me busy, and I spent a hell of lot of time with his extended family. They made me feel so at home that I almost forgot that I was still on my adventure around the world. November flew by, December came along before I knew it, the wedding came and ... read more

Petra is something else altogether, a beautiful city carved into and out of the rocky outcrops of Wadi Musa - the Valley of Moses - and which was the capital of the ancient Nabatean people. It is also an area replete with Biblical associations, in which it was known as both Seir and Sela. The most famous Petran was King Herod, he who lopped off John the Baptist’s head. Earlier, the Cainites (son of Adam and brother of Abel) resided here. Esau (son of Isaac and grandson of Abraham) moved his kin here after a spat with his brother Jacob. And when Moses was leading the Chosen People to the Promised Land, King Rekem of Petra refused them permission to pass through their lands, which I guess could go someway to explaining that 40 year journey ... read more

4-12-7 gave reggae 100 and flag. flew to cairo. got long bus ride which went under canal (didn't see it), past red sea resorts all the way to sharm el sheik. seven hour trip took eleven, ten security checks en route. arrived dahab midnight, owner saying he had only sand beach in town and i'm thinking we're aussies, he's selling ice cubes to eskimos and i find myself dreaming of mollymook, mooloolaba and scotts head. we've certainly damaged the land in 200 years. these peopole have been at it for millenia and it shows, not a level spot that hasn't been crushed, dug, scraped, piled up, torn down or pissed on. that's why the mountains are so appealing. their gnarled and eroded flanks defying us. 5-12-7 resort breakfast. kate slept and i sat immobile for hours ... read more

Hey everyone, I hope that you are all doing well and enjoying the winter that is taking hold. I personally went and played soccer in shorts and a tee shirt yesterday and it was glorious. This will be my last email because I am heading back to New York this Friday after my final exam on Thursday. I haven't done anything outside of Amman since I last wrote, so I thought that I would just give you some parting stories and a reflection. I want to start with a couple of things that I have learned after talking with some of the Muslims in Kharabsha, an area near Qasid where many of the students live. The conversation started with me describing a presentation that we had in class about the various creation stories across religions and ... read more

Hey all, I hope that everyone is doing well and enjoyed my last entry. I am slowly winding down my time here and will probably only post one or two more times before I head back to the States. My studies are going well and I feel like I am really advancing in the language both in the Jordanian dialect and the Modern standard and apparently look confident enough wandering around on the street that I was asked for directions which was awesome. One of the main events that happened recently must have been a first in the history of Amman. One of my friends here, Willow, was supposed to do a half Marathon down in Aqaba at the end of the month but then found out that she had to go home early and was ... read more
