It’s 7:15a now and I just got back from breakfast. As I approached my room I noticed that the carpet in front of my door was darker in that circular pattern that can only mean one thing - flooding. But wait - I’m getting ahead of myself. Let’s start with my arrival in Jordan 36 hours ago where I watched the carousel go ‘round and ‘round until it stopped without producing my cherished luggage. I filled out my “lost luggage” form like a good boy (along with 20 other people) and was assured that my bag would be on the next flight which occurs in **24 hours**. I had to work yesterday, and did so wearing what I flew in, REI hiking shorts and a silk button-down short-sleeved shirt. Could have been worse. My bags were ... read more

Amman is a very typical Middle Eastern city, at least the Middle East I know. It is very clean, cool and nobody is trying to sell you something all the time like Egypt. I spent a week five days in Amman and although there is not much to do beside visiting the old places and the museum, the city is lovely. ... read more

The serviced taxi ride from Damascus to Amman was looking to be a disaster. Picture a big-bellied driver, a big-bellied Jordanian riding shotgun, and me in the back riding thigh-to-thigh with two Jordanian men. Throw in a lack of AC in the Middle Eastern sun and a permanent stream of cigarette smoke, the next 3 hours of my life crossing into Jordan were 3 hours I would have paid to skip. The man in the front made no efforts to acknowledge my existence, the man to my right was thinner than me and also seemed glued to his cell phone. After some rather hopeless attempts at communication, I sort of just gave up and relinquished myself to misery until the man on my left busted out with some admirable English. At first glance he is the ... read more

My last day in Syria was spent having one last wander around the souq and eating lots of ice cream and taking a few last pictures. Went to get the bus to Jordan and was then swayed to get a service taxi as for a grand total of 200 sp my journey time would hopefully be halved! Got to the taxi station and ended up sharing the car with a Jordanian mother and son (in his 20's) and another randomer who didnt speak English! The border crossing was suprisingly easy and I wasnt charged for overstaying my visa despite being 10 days over - he did attempt to question me about it and so I stuttered 'but I went to immigration' which seemed to appease him!! The visa for Jordan was 10 JD and all went ... read more

This last week has been pretty rough. This will probably be my last entry. Things with my dad are up and down. He is just kind of hanging in there. So, I am not sure what will happen. I am still recovering from being sick. I haven't really left the building but like 2 times in 4 or 5 days. I've just been working on homework, with no pressure thanks to my wonderful professor, and trying to avoid bad smelling food. We are leaving Monday mornging at about 12:05pm. Tomorrow is our farewell banquet, but I am not sure how many people will actually be going. About half of our group has came down with the virus, the word on the street is that it is the rotavirus, which normally kids get, but adults can get ... read more

As some of you might have noticed, I am not actually sure how many people check this daily, I have not written in about 3 days. In the early morning on the 26th I received a call from my aunt. My dad is back in the hospital with pneumonia and not doing well at all. It is pretty much the end. There is not much they have been able to do for about a year now. He has been on hospice care and really in and out of the hospital. I have never been all that close with him, but at the same time it is still my parent that is dying. So, I haven't felt like doing much to say the least and debated about coming home early or not. At this time after discussing ... read more

Petra is a beautiful place! Here is a website about Petra, if you would like some more info on it http://www.visitjordan.com/majorattractions/Petra/tabid/63/Default.aspx. We were not there for very long. It is about a 3-4 hour drive there and back. The bus was very bumpy and there was not much to see along the way except for alot of desert! Fortunately we went early in the day, we left at 6:00am. It became very hot by the middle of the day and you are in the sun alot. We split up and walked around, there was alot to see. The highlight of my trip is riding a camel for about 10 minutes for the price of 5 dinar! Some of you know this was one of my reasons for coming to Jordan:) You know, it is very different ... read more

Yesterday we went to the Dead Sea! It was really cool. For some of those who do not know much about it I will tell you. For starters it is the lowest point on the earth I believe. The neatest thing about it is you really cannot do much in it except for float! It is so full of salt and so bouyant that you can't swim, drown, or hardly move! It was quite an experience. My favorite part is that nothing is alive in it, so I do not have to worry about creatures bothering me:) It is also said that the mud from the sea can be used for a nice skin treatment, which many of my classmates covered themselves from head to toe! This made great pictures:) We were told that it will ... read more

So, today is not really much different than yesterday. I will say it was best to stay in most of the day, it reached about 92 degrees. I don't feel it is that bad though, there really is not much humidity as in Indiana. This morning we met with an ambassador. That was very nice, he was a very intelligent man. We were able to talk a bit about politics in Jordan and the Middle East in general. He is very prestigious, and it was really a treat to be able to talk to him! Then it was study time and lunch time. After lunch we met with the people in charge of Islamica Magazine. It is a magazine published in Jordan. That was a lot of fun! From there a few of us went to ... read more
