Out of Syria, across the border and before you knew it we were "CROSSING JORDAN". Amman is the capital and the inevitable first stop for most tourists rolling in from our direction. Amman is hardly your quintessential exotic Middle Eastern city but there were enough distractions in and around to occupy us for a couple of days. There's nothing particularly wrong with Amman but nor is there particularly anything right with it. Petra, on the other hand, is THE must see and everyone who visits Jordan does see. There's a reason for that. Petra is (I'm trying to think of an appropriate enough non-cliched superlative but it's just not happening) out of this world. (That will have to do). Someone asked me how I would rate Petra relative to the other great archaelogical sites we've been ... read more

Happy Thanksgiving everyone. I hope that you all had a great holiday and spent time with those you care about. Because I was unable to go home, I ate dinner at the house of a Lt. Col. in the Air force and it was amazing. I met him at the U.S. Embassy and asked him if he could help me talk to some people who work in the State Department and yesterday I got a call inviting me to Thanksgiving at his house. I had a great time with loads of food and the company was great. I was also able to talk with someone who works in the foreign service so it was a very fulfilling evening, even if my Taboo team lost. It was nice to celebrate here, and it brought back some good ... read more

The blank desert scenery flew past my window as I headed north through Jordan. I knew that just beyond the flat, brown expanses along the road, the fabled crusader fortress of Shobak Castle, rose up in the distant hills, but, despite a strong urge to see it, that wasn’t where I was headed. After six days of wonderfully active exploring in the canyons and mountains of Petra, I was exhausted and I just wanted to rest, so I reluctantly decided to skip the remote, mountaintop citadel. Instead I was on an overcrowded bus bound for Amman, Jordan’s capital. My journey through the Middle East was down to its last week and I no longer had the luxury of an itinerary-less existence on the road. Amman was the end of the road for me, but there were ... read more

There is no mistaking the fact that Jordan is a Kingdom steeped in history and culture. From the moment you arrive, you get a sense of its rich heritage, all around are remnants of ancient civilizations long since past, yet they still remain, stamped into the very fabric of this amazing Kingdom and etched into the soul of the people who live here. Amman, the capital city of Jordan is a sprawling city spread over 19 hills. The only modern city combined with the ancient civilization. Mom and I surely had a relaxing and a memorable holiday. Arabic in Jordan would really be an advantage to make the communication simpler and people ripping you off every where. We arrived early morning and checked in Firas Palace hotel which was far from the city. But we had ... read more

The Heart of The Holy Land Sure, if you’re going to go to the Middle East you might as well find yourself a safe corner, right? That’s what we figured when we were planning the end of our trip. Much like our recent (read as too late) infatuation with Africa, we also have a serious infatuation with the Middle East. How can you not have an interest in the cradle of civilization? Sure this area is dangerous, at least more dangerous than some places, but it is also the heart of history. Here you have the founding of three of the world’s top religions, the site of thousands of years of military conflict, and some of the world’s oldest standing structures. What is there not to love? So, with all that in mind and a ... read more

... read more

Our next stop, kid free, in Jordon was Hammamat Ma’in (Ma’in Hot Springs). . It is pretty cool. Ma'in is about 30 mins from Amman. My sister in law's husband drives a taxi in Amman so we did not have to worry about transportation. If you are not fortunate to have relatives who can drive, you can hire a van and driver for fairly cheap in Amman. We passed through Madaba, known for its mosaics that date back 3500 years, We stopped here to pick up our lunch. Chicken, rice, hummus and labne(yougurt). I would suggest bringing your lunc into Ma'in. I did catch a pic of some ruins here. Not sure when they date but they look cool. The huge waterfall, heated by uderground lava fissures, fills many baths below.Underneath the waterfall is a cavern that ... read more

Today I saw the worlds largest flying flag on an unsupported flagpole - the size of two football pitches (apparently?!), one of the worlds oldest known statues - the al Ghazal plaster work figures and some very odd looking coffins; all in around or from the citadel in Amman. So today has been a veritable list of superlatives. Whatever next?... read more

The first Friday we were in Jordan, after J'umaih we had a bbq at a park in Amman. In the way to the park, it was about 15 minutes from downtown, people would stopp on the side of the road and have tea anad bbq. This park had no grass but it did have lots of trees and large open areas. It reminded me of Northern California around Yosemite area. The park was pretty full and we had to drive a way out the road till we found a spot. My husband' three sister's and their husbands, their twelve childrened, combined, my family of four and my husband's brother all went. We had to rent a bus to get out their. The kids and the adult spent time trying to fly kites but the wind was ... read more

We arrived in Amman around 4 am. It did not take us long to get our visas and our baggage. we were greated my AHmad's two sisters, his brother and one of his sister's husband. After a 30 minute drive from the Airport we arrived at his sister Khoula's house. There we met her 6 kids, who my husband had not seen the oldest two since they were young and the other four he had never seen. We had tea and ate something. Mohammed, his brother found an apartment for 20 dinar, $25 american. It is a nice two bedroom, with a kitchen and a living room. Tomorrow my husband and his brother are going to the Israel embassy to find out about a visa for my husband to go to Palestine. In shalla there will ... read more
