Today, we went to the Israel Embassy in Jordon to see about a travel visa for my husband. We put our names on a list and waited to be called. This is out on the street in front of the embassy. There are many people waiting behind the cement blocks erected for barriers. There are to armed Jordanian soldiers here along with different men who come and go reading lists and looking at papers. They must work for the embassy. My husband's name was called and we pass throught the barrier and walked a few meters to another waiting area. This time two rows of benches with a sun cover were provided. Men in one row and women in another. "This looked like a sign of hospitality" I thought to myself. My thought was soon proven ... read more

Go to www.lajee.org and visit the website of this wonderful organisation that helps the kids in the refugee camp of Bethlehem express themselves in a peaceful way by trying to make them forget about their situation, i.e.being a child in a Palestinian refugee camp under Israelis occupation. See there the project they try to put up, whether it is the Debka troup performances, or the International summer camp allowing the kids but also the families to meet some volunteers coming from all over the globe. I arrived when their first children summer camp was ending and participated in the celebration organised by Lajee center to thank all children in what they have achieved together. Lots of laughter, and lots of hope especially when they see a foreigner witnessing it. I attended an aerobic class for ... read more

... read more

Even though this time I'm having my laptop with me this time its been so hard to regularly keep up my travel journal as I had hardly any time to put it down.. and the bit time I had I used for taking rest. I've been now for 3 days in ar ram staying with my friends who have been so so lovely and hospitable that I feel really sad when thinking that tomorrow I will leave again. I arrived in Jerusalem on Thursday evening after a long trip from Dahab through the egyptian-israeli border to Eilat and further till Jerusalem central bus station. Musab and Ibrahim, his father, were going to wait near damascus gate for me and so I was trying my best to get there by bus from the central station. First of ... read more

His panic-stricken little face lights up when he receives the information that we’ll escort him home, sending him skipping merrily down the road on an errand to buy potatoes. This is the Palestinian Authority controlled area of Hebron, and as we cross through Tel Rumeida checkpoint to the other side in order to wait for the Palestinian boy’s return, we soon discover the source of his fear. We are confronted by around 100 ultra-orthodox Jews, who are gathered in Hebron to mark ‘Hebron day’, one of whom shouts “You know that Jesus is gay?”. None of us really react to this arbitrary taunt, however it does serve to focus the crowd’s attentions squarely on our small group of human rights workers. Another shouts “What are you doing here?” “Tourists” I reply, believing this to be the ... read more

The day I met Mary was a usual warm middle eastern summer day. The air was dusty even though the sky was dark blue competing with the intense yellow-brown of the sunscorched palestinian scenery. I didn't sleep too long that long morning since the Mu'azzin summoned muslim residents of the old city to start the day with the obligatory salAt, the morning prayer which usually starts before dawn. After the prayer call I tossed and turned in my bed and eventually I decided to get up and have a cool morning shower before having a look around town. Impressions were magical and amazed me over and over. It became noon and I decided to take a trip to the other side of the "wall" that separates the palestinian territory the westbank from the rest of the ... read more

So this is sort of a blog within a blog, as it details my daytrip into Bethlehem from Jerusalem, however I figured that since my last blog dealt with Israel, and Bethlehem is clearly not an Israeli city, I should do it separately. I was somewhat nervous about going into the West Bank, given the political situation in the Palestinian territories, however the security situation was stable at the time that I was there, and given that this was probably the best chance I would ever have in my life of seeing Bethlehem, I decided to go for it. Anyway, for those not familiar with it's location, Bethlehem is in the West Bank, just south of Jerusalem. And while people's definitions may vary slightly of what constitutes the West Bank (the Old City of Jerusalem is ... read more
