Back in Nablus after two weeks of computer-free travel in Israel, I am learning to find my way to and from the important points in town, such as the Al Jasmeen Hotel which is a local hangout for foreigners, I've been told, and has great coffee and free wifi. Now that I've found my way here I can write a little about my recent travels. There has been a lot of contrast during these last two weeks between Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and Deisha, a refugee camp outside of Bethlehem in the West Bank. After staffing a Shambhala Training level in Tel Aviv I was planning to embark on a couchsurfing mission around Israel in order to meet Israelis and get some sort of a picture of Israeli society first hand rather than rely on other people's ... read more

A borrowed copy of Lonely Planet says that the Arabic name Nablus comes from the Latin Neopolis or "New City" which was the name Romans gave the city they rebuilt at the site of the historical city of Shechem. Nablus is a somewhat feared name in Israel as a hotbed of Palestinian nationalism and is known inside of Palestine for being more traditional (less westernized) and most importantly for kenafa (a cheese dessert) as well as olive soap. People in Nablus are friendly and seem curious about the local American teachers. Everyone greets us with "Welcome!" everywhere in town. Getting by without any Arabic has not been difficult here. The few locals I've come across without any English quickly find someone who speaks English to help or readily use gestures and write out numbers to fascilitate ... read more

Well today we officially go into Palestinian territories to go to Bethlehem! (finally) The lovely Sister Gemma is taking a few of us because the Israelis aren't allowed to go there. Poor Rachel, "the only Jew on the bus" as she likes to put it, haha. On Saturday we went on a HUGE trip down to the Jordan Valley, past the Palestinian city of Jericho, along the banks of the Dead Sea to the historical site of Masada. We went up to the fortress on this massive gondola (which freakishly reminded me of being crammed into a cattle car) filled to the brim with people. It was pretty amazing to walk in the rooms that Herod built for his kazillion wives, and not to mention the amazing view of the Dead sea and the banks of ... read more

I am writing this from the comfort of my living room in Marietta, Georgia having just returned from Israel a few hours ago. Many thanks to Patricia and Dale for picking me up at the last minute from Marta and Mitch for taking exceptional care of Snuggles these last two weeks. I have one last entry from Israel--Bethlehem from the West Bank. This was definitely not a planned trip but one I will never forget. A colleague named Pat from the counselors' group and I headed out to Jerusalem on Saturday as we had some rare time to ourselves during the Jewish Sabbath. We were approached by a cab driver in front of our hotel who made an offer we decided we would not pass up--he drove us to the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem ... read more

After driving across the desert plain of Moab, we crossed the Jordan River approximately where the Israelites crossed when Jehovah miraculously stopped the river. The Allenby Bridge is named for the British field marshal who captured Jerusalem from the Ottoman Turks in 1917. I must agree with Naaman the Syrian. Although the River floods to a mighty crest in the spring, at this time of year it is a muddy trickle. I'm sure he felt insulted at being asked to dip himself in it, and I'm certain there are seven streams back in Fairfax County that appear more impressive. We are already over 800 feet below sea level. Nearby is the ancient city of Jericho, where Rahab hid the 2 Israelite spies, and where God made the city walls collapse so Joshua could take the city. ... read more

I have a confession to make, and this confession is that four months ago when I was working in my tall building with my important computers in my expensive clothes in my fancy city, I knew barely the bare minimum about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Nothing, and really, I didn't even care too much. I wouldn't doubt that many of you reading this probably don't know much or care to know much either. For me, it was just another piece of bloody news, somebody attacking somebody else, somebody else blowing up another building, all happening on a little strip of land far, far away. Happens all over the world, and I can't figure out which conflict deserves more attention than the other, so I'll get back to it another day... Sounds ignorant and heartless I know, but ... read more

We are now on the hour count down before we leave. Last night we didn't sleep at all. Adri became an uncle for the 19th time. At 2:30 am we had to drive to the hospital as the new baby had arrived. Driving into the city at night is a little crazy as you not only have to go through the checkpoint (very suspiciously at this tie of night), but then there are several Palestinian 'checkpoints' within the city as they too are suspicious. The car we drive has a yellow licence plate (Israeli) because the car was rented in Jerusalem. Palestinian plates are white. Either way, we made it to the hospital to greet the new arrival to the clan. The hospital experience is surreal, especially the maternity ward. Adri calls it a 'production line". ... read more
