Shalom! Sorry that we did not get a chance to blog yesterday. We ended up going to watch the other teams in our group play yesterday morning. Australia ended up beating Chile on a last-minute goal. We watched a little bit of the Great Britain-Argentina game and that was a much better game. I think we would have to play a team from that group if we win ours. After watching the other games, we went for a jog/stretch on one of the practice fields. We then came back to the hotel but didn't have much time since we had to leave for the opening ceremonies around 3pm. Before leaving for the ceremonies, our very own Josh B. and Yaron presented us with a freestyle rap about all of the guys, which was very funny. Josh ... read more

Shalom! This morning we had our first game against Peru. We started off a little slow but eventually got things going. Chase scored on a loose ball in front of goal to make the score 1-0 midway through the first half. Although we had a few other good scoring chances, we went into halftime only up 1-0. We started the second half better and our hard work paid off as Mike was able to beat the keeper and slot one across the box for Andy to tap into the empty net. A little later in the half Dan was fouled in the box after a long run up the flank, resulting in a penalty kick. Leon stepped up to take the kick and buried the shot to make it 3-0. Charlie scored our fourth goal after ... read more

Shalom! Since I didn't get around to posting a blog about last night, I will give a quick recap. We had a team meeting followed by Shabbat services and then a Shabbat dinner with all of the other countries we are staying with. The food was pretty good and all of the guys seemed to enjoy themselves. As for today, we had a light team run for about 15 minutes just to loosen the muscles a bit and get a nice stretch. We were given the day off again to just relax by the pool or hang out and do whatever. We have a team meeting at 6pm followed by dinner. It was nice the first two days we were at the hotel because we were the only country here and didn't have to worry about ... read more

Shalom! Most of you are probably sleeping right now and anxiously waiting to hear the result of our scrimmage with Maccabi Haifa. We were victorious! We played three 30 minute periods because I think that is what the other team wanted. We ended up winning 4-0. Andy scored in the first stanza, Mike scored in the second, and Josh B. and Rhett finished the scoring in the third. As a team, we played pretty well and are looking forward to carrying the momentum into the game on Sunday vs Peru. The field where we played is going to be one of the sites for the tournament and is a very nice field. More and more teams are starting to arrive in our hotel so it is nice to see and meet people from other countries. We ... read more

Shalom from Haifa. We spent most of the day hanging out in K'far Maccabiah and then headed to our new hotel in Haifa around 4pm or so. It is a very nice hotel right in the middle of town. There is a little mall connected to the hotel which is pretty cool. There are a bunch of little shops within walking distance, maybe one or two blocks. There is a McDonald's which is one block away and right now is our only source of free wireless internet available. The hotel is charging $90/week for internet which is way too expensive, considering the other hotel only charged $24/week. There are other restaurants around that serve American food which might be a good thing after a few days. We might finally get a taste of some Israeli pizza. ... read more

Well, here we are again, I think I left you with the promise of a 55k bicycle ride in aid of wounded and disabled to help integrate them back into normal life and to encourage them to take up sports. This was to be my first real cycle on my new ‘Trek’ it was going to be a real test to see whether or not I have mastered the gears. I decided against using the cleats as I really did not want to look too much of an amateur by falling off the damn thing whilst struggling to get my feel unhooked from the pedals. We had to set out at 5am to reach the Kibbutz at Mizra the start and finish place of the ride. It was funny to be driving to the event at ... read more

We got to sleep in today and get rid of the last of the jetlag. The Cantor led us on a walk to see Yael's home in Haifa. We saw the building and waved to her neighbors. We saw where she gets her sandwiches, but everything was closed on Shabbat. We took a nice walk along the Promenade back to the hotel and saw some local entertainers. We are off to our sister temple later today. - Caroline & Jeff... read more

We travelled north to Nahariah, our sister congregation. It was much smaller than the temple we visited in Haifa, but we were greeted very enthusiatically by the temple leaders and their families. We donated the children books that we had brought with us and they were appreciated. The half hour leading to the end of Shabbat was a great musical experience. Cantor Rica sang with the accompaniment of their very musical rabbi. Then all the past and present members of Rinat Beth El brought down the house with some selections. Then their rabbi sang a beautiful song backed by his organ playing that was very emotional. We learned alot about the temple at Nahariah and how they have growth against all odds. They are starting to strive due to an influx of immigants from Argentina. The ... read more
