Tonight we went to a service at a very impressive Reform Temple in Haifa. They were very welcoming. All the woman participated in lighting Shabbat candles, the kids went up to sing a song and Cantor Rica sang with the Rabbi. While most of the service was in Hebrew, we did get a good feeling for what was going on. After the service, we had a lovely dinner with the Rabbi and some temple members. We went around the room and we each got up, Temple Beth-El members and Israeli temple member both, and said something about ourselves and our connection to Israel and this trip. It was an US-Israeli bonding event. Even though the younger kids were starting to fall asleep (including Issac who slept on a couch thru dinner), we had an interesting Q&A ... read more

We all got moving bright and early this morning. After breakfast we went to the Tunisian Temple in historic Acco north of Haifa. The mosiacs were breathtaking and one of the founders of the temple was very welcoming and charming. He asked us all to consider moving to Israel because "Peace will come to Israel once all the Jews come to Israel". The mosaics in the temple are a chronicle of Jewish history from biblical times thru the Holocaust. They want to make sure that our history is all captured in long-lasting stones. In the old city of Acco, we saw the remains of a Crusader era site and the Turkish baths. However, the kids were more interested in the stray cats that were roaming the area. Rebecca and Carly both seemed to be "Cat Whisperers" ... read more

Everyone arrived during the day. We arrived after the sightsighting, but in time for a group dinner with everyone. We were tired but excited about starting the next day. - Caroline & Jeff Silver Most of us arrived on an ELAL flight together and although exhausted, we were excited to arrive and hit the ground running. Larry and Shari our tour guide met us at the airport and we were off on our own bus (and Avner, our driver) to Ceasaria. Our first stop was at the aqueduct and famous arches on the beach. We almost lost a couple of kids who were thrilled to see the Mediterranean Sea. Pretty quickly we discovered that our oldest kids, Murray and Charles, each found their way to the top of the ruins and Shari learned that she'll need ... read more

Today I took my first organized tour to northern Israel traveling along the Mediterranean Sea. Caesarea is chocked full of Roman, Byzantine and Crusader ruins and most famously housed two of King Herod's palaces complete with baths, a port, a cathedral, a theater and an aqueduct. Saint Paul was sent here but managed to get sent to Rome where he was eventually put to death. Haifa is the third largest Israel city and has the largest port. We stopped at a lookout at the top of the city and were able to look down at the Baha'i gardens. We passed by the German colony consisting of houses built by Germans who assisted with excavating in the northern part of Israel in the 1800's. Acre, aka Akko, is the most preserved Crusader city in the world. It ... read more

We met a French/American couple, which lives in Israel while hiking in Simian Mountain in Ethiopia. Sounds like the beginning of a joke but isn't. Before we separated we exchanged email addresses and we promised to pop by when we are in Israel and so we did. It’s not only that we liked them and that Haifa sounded like a great place but also the promise of staying in a proper flat and not a hotel, which added to our excitement. Haifa itself is the North Ryde (Silicon Valley for everyone not living in Sydney) of Israel and is a nice city but without too many attractions. Next to it is however Acre which has a 3500 year tradition and a virtually intact old town within some great city walls. As usual in Israel everyone owned ... read more

So I have had some terror stories with exchanges while I was in high school. I did an exchange freshman year, to Paris and the family had two children I remember the age of the children but not the names.. The daughter was 13 and the brother was 17. I was so excited because it was the first time in a long time that I have gone abroad. I walked into hell or at least it felt that way. The parents were getting a divorce, the daughter didnt really speak english (i guess that was the point) and the father spoke to me in hebrew; how ironic. This also took place while the war on terrorism broke out and the French were not the fondest people of America. The second story actually happened in Israel and ... read more

Asaf (Jason's Hebrew name, seems appropriate to refer to him that way while we are in his homeland) wrote the below at 3am: It is 3 AM here in Israel, and we are wide awake. We just got back from my brother Nadav's wedding. It was a really wonderful event. Especially considering that he only planned it a few weeks earlier, and seemed very casual about the whole thing (we were hanging out and swimming on the beach with him less than 2 hours before the wedding). But that's often the way it is here. And yet, they had a beautiful wedding in a beautiful garden, with great food and music. Of course, being Israel, there were 200+ people, most of them relatives. Our family alone is having at least 4 or 5 weddings in Israel ... read more

So we headed off to Haifa and Tel Aviv for our final interviews. We had 2 sessons in Haifa and one interview in Tel Aviv. Haifa is beautiful. It's built on a hill overlooking the Mediterranian. The interviews went well, and again, just adding more to the hard decisions we need to make. After the interviews, we checked into our hotel and went for dinner in the German quater. Absolutely gorgeous area at the foot of the Bahai gardens. We ened up at a wine tasting party at one of the restaurants. It felt extremely strange as the crowd was a mix of Israeli's and Israeli Arabs. We couldn't tell who was who and who spoke hebrew or arabic. After being in such segregated areas that are striking different, it was amazing to be in a ... read more

Iris atropurpurea, a huge, gorgeous, purple iris, is endemic to the Mediterranean coast of Israel. The remaining populations are scattered among a couple of dozen nature reserves, most of them tiny (less than 2 acres), but a couple of them large (probably 200 acres). These reserves were established specially for protection of the irises, but although they protect the iris plants themselves, they may not be big enough because of a peculiarity about the ecological interactions between the irises and their pollinators. Unlike most plants, the irises offer no nectar to reward their pollinators for visiting. They do have pollen that several insect species, including honeybees, collect, and these pollen collectors may pollinate the iris flowers occasionally. However, the main pollinators are the males of several species of Eucera bees that don’t collect pollen or nectar; ... read more

We rented a car last weekend and toured a bit in the north, returning to Haifa each evening. On Saturday we visited Goren Park in the northern Galilee. Lots of wildflowers. We took a short hike to the ruins of a crusader fortress, Montfort. The location of the fortress puzzled me. I would expect it to be built on the ridgetop, with a good view of the surrounding countryside and where it would be easy to defend. Instead it’s situated half way down the hillside. Sunday we visited two sites in the Golan: Nimrod’s fortress and Gamla. Nimrod’s fortress was built by the Muslims in the 13th century to defend Damascus against the crusaders. It is the best preserved castle in Israel, and is in better shape that the pictures here indicate. Situated on a ridge ... read more
