I cannot remember the previous night very well due to the 13 hour haul that obliterated my mind, along with a 5.5 hour time difference - the 0.5 was something i wrestled with most. But my first day in Tehran proved jollier than expected. We were to leave Tehran for later on in the trip and we went on our little bus ride down to visit Rayen, Qom and Mashad. Rayen (10kms south of Tehran) was where the Imam Khoumeini shrine - it was our first time witnessing the abundant blue-green domes decorated with elaborate tiles. Despite the fact that it is still under construction since 1989, it still is very impressive and quite a shock to see the gold minarets and huge blue domes from the distance. here, i was fully acquainted with my ... read more

These words I hear about 50 times a day, than there is the "where are you from question" and the "what is your name" or "how are you"... That I get about 20 times a day... I seem to stick out with my blond hair in this country... But it's all in good fun... While waiting for the Pakistani visa, Vojta (Czech traveller) and I decided to take a break from Tehran and head down to Kashan for a day or two.. Kashan is a very pleasant city with a nice bazaar... You can climb to the roof of the bazaar and have great views of the city at sunset... It also has a nice teahouse situated in a converted hammam and some huge 19th century mansions from rich merchants and the like... It's good that ... read more

Our two days ın Esfahan were two of the best of the trıp, ıts such an amazıng place and made us truly gutted that we only have seven days ın Iran. We spent our tıme wanderıng the streets checkıng out the mosques and palaces - fılled wıth wonderful blue mosaıcs, beautıful frescoes and ornate decoratıon on every surface. Walkıng ınto Imam Square for the fırst tıme was lıke walkıng ınto a dream - green grass covered wıth pıcnıcers, horses and carrıages takıng couples for romantıc rıdes, fountaıns explodıng upwards ınto the blue sky, and the amazıng domes of the Imam and Sheıkh Lotfollah mosques rısıng heavenwards. Our favourıte was the Sheıkh Lotfollah mosque, a tıny sıngle dome wıth some of the most exquısıte tıle work ın the world. We were lucky enough to vıew ıt durıng ... read more

Arrived in Esfahan on a back to back National holiday for the Iranians cause its the anniversary of their founder. Hence, every mosque, palace or any place that needed tickets was closed. Explored the bazaar , Imam Square and the Bridges of Esfahan instead. Esfahan has good weather! Its kinda windy and cool. The bazaar is pretty interesting selling things from carpets to camel bone ornaments. I realise bazaars in Iran are just huge mega shopping places. Really interesting with tons and tons of things they sell. And their bazaars are usually huge ( few km large). Got sucked into a carpet shop. I feel Persian carpets are really beautiful and are really investments but too bad I can't afford it.... The river and its bridges were pretty ....Its really nice taking an evening stroll ... read more

So after all Erika’s blogs about Iran so far its time for me to say something. Iran really is one of the best countries we have visited and certainly one of the most surprising and interesting. It is not at all like I had imagined and the people are amazing. We are asked all the time what we think about Iran and what we thought/knew about Iran before we came. I am never sure how to answer as I did not have a fixed view or opinion and guessed that much that we are told in the west would be wrong, which was really why I wanted to come. I now know that Iran is a modern, highly civilised and developed country with diverse landscape, modern cities, and a highly educated, polite and hospitable population. Few ... read more

Took a short trip to Kashan on route to Tehran as i head back to the border. Abyaneh was nice with the little Red houses .....The local women dress in pretty colourful clothings different from the other cities. Abayneh is at the foot of a mountain ...sslightly elevated giving the area a cool and crisp weather. Nice scenery out here with some really nice tall trees...(pine trees? not sure) at the end of a short walk, there is also a mini water fall ....pretty refreshing to drink from it. Guess this is a weekend getaway place for Iranians. My guide was pretty nice and for lunch we went to Kashan and ate some really nice Kebab. Although i'm starting to get a bit sick of Kebab, this one was really good so no complains....haha Kashan ... read more

Hamedan is a pleasant, green city with fantastic views up to the Zagros Mountains, with Alvand peak dominating the skyline. The Farsisch Guesthouse was really welcoming and the 2 crazy old men who run it made us feel very at home, giving us washing powder for our laundry and helping to tie a rope on the roof to dry it, even if they were mumbling stuff about “Hitler, good” and “Britain, hmmm Bobby Sands ha-ha-ha”. It was Friday and so it seemed everyone in Iran had gone for a picnic. We met Majid in the guesthouse, he is a student in Tehran but was working doing civil engineering and surveying for a new railway that is going to be built pretty much along the line that we had taken as a muddy short cut in the ... read more

Planned to leave Esphahan the day before yesterday but the bus wasnt leaving till 7pm and I heard about a tour to Kashan and Abanyeh, they were on my original itinerary so, why not. I stole a book out of the exchange library, there was only one in English, The Bonfire of The Vanities, naturally if I had a choice I would have chosen somethinmg else, it wasnt bad I, think I am becoming cultured. What a lazy day only left the room to eat occasionaly. I was off on the road at 7am the next morning luggage packed and ready to go, the driver turned up on time and we were off, the drive was really safe though the driver was a little strange but in a nice way, he has been driving trucks back ... read more
