American traveling Overland via Train through Iran....

I'm American wanting to travel via Train from Istanbul to India starting in Feb 2010.

I need to travel for about 5-6 days through Iran... I haven't tried to get a Visa yet, which sounds like it will be rather hard. However, even if I get approved for a Visa they are saying I need an escort/guide every day i'm there. Does anyone know how this works? Is tehre any way around this... i'll be on a train most of the time... how would I even find a guide to do this?? Not to mention what the cost would be?

Also, I assume I will run into the same problems with Pakistan.....

Any help or input please!!!
