Wed 10th - A fairly laid back day before heading back to the Syrian club for another meze with people we’d met the night before. After dinner we smoked…this thing…I’m not entirely sure how to describe it. It is a big bottle with a pipe and on the top is the coals that burn the tobacco which comes in different flavours. You don’t inhale the smoke, you just take the flavour in your mouth. We had apple and it was really yummy, it didn’t taste smokey or yucky at all.... read more

Sun 7th - Mum and dad drove us down to the party central of Cyprus where we were going to stay for 2 nights. We spent the day at the beach (it was becoming a fairly regular thing by now!) then went to our hotel. We got a great location, in between the beach and all the clubs and cafes. That night we sat on balcony and had some drinks then wandered into the party area to find a life outdoor concert, it was U2 cover band, and they were great! And the beer was cheap, so we kicked on for a great night. Sat 8th - I was a little slow moving, actually I just wasn’t moving at all, until I dragged myself down to the hotel pool where I continued to not move while ... read more

History - Just to give you an idea, because I had none before I came, Cyrpus is split between North and South. There’s been a lot of fighting here and for the last 20 odd years the UN have been here. The Nth of the island is Turkish and the Sth is Greek. The city of Nicosia, the capital, has an old town which back in the very old days was surrounded by a wall. This city has now been split between Nth and Sth. Literally, the line went through middle of the city and if you were on the wrong side of the line you just had to up and move and leave your house/business/possessions behind. To move between the Nth and Sth you have to pass through the UN buffer zone. There are Turkish ... read more

Our Cyprus Vacation: Soaking up the Sun We continue to explore the island of Cyprus by making a stop at a local beach club. Many travelers from all of the world come to these beach club resorts for their summer vacation. Many travelers were from Turkey, Great Britian, and Russia. And..Me... I had to have been the only American Citizen on the island..but... you never know! The first beach club we went to was beautiful. I began the afternoon with a tasty frozen strawberry daquiri and a redbull/vodka while Ismail had a Coca-Cola *S*. We covered ourselves in tanning oil and layed out on the beach club lounge chairs. After getting a little sun, we headed for the sea. The sun was too hot so we decided to test the waters of the Mediterranean Sea. ... read more

Welcome to Cyprus: Birthplace of Aphrodite: Goddess of Beauty Cyprus is the first stop on our 3 week journey throughout the Middle East and Europe. We visited the North Cyprus Republic of Turkey. In 1983, the Turkish Republic took the Northern lands from the Greeks and therefore North Cyprus is controlled by the Turkish Republic while the rest of the island remains Greek. We were not able to visit the Greek side because Ismail is a Turkish citizen and at this time Turkish citizens are not allowed to cross borders into the Greek side of Cyprus. After missing our first flight at 7 am Saturday morning from Istanbul to Ercan, Cyprus, we searched for the next available flight. We found one leaving the next day. So we arrived at the airport in Ercan, Cyprus where ... read more

First off, a bit of history. Cyprus was a Brittish colony up through the mid sixties, when it became independent. Of course, the island has loads of history, but modern day Cyprus is basically ethnically split between the Greeks and the Turks, with the turks mostly in the North of the island, and the Greeks mostly in the South. I don't know all of the details, but apparently in 1974 the Greeks did something that the Turks didn't like so much. The Turkish government sent in the troops, and basically took over half the island. The troops are still there today. The Turks now call it the "Operation for Peace", while the Greeks call it an unlawful "invasion". You say toe-may-toe, I say toe-mah-toe. Some of this might have been handy to know before arriving there. ... read more

I’ve been wanting to go to Paphos since last summer so when Jill invited me to go to her wedding there, I couldn’t refuse! When I got to Paphos is was early evening but it was very humid! I hadn’t gone with anyone but I was meeting my new roommates at the hotel, Paphos Garden Hotel & Apartments, which Jill’s sister arranged. There were 3 of Jill’s friends who were also attending the wedding! They were all great and all very different so it was a good bunch! The best person I met that night was baby Josh, Jill’s nephew who was the cutest!!! If he was around, forget about getting my attention!!! I was constantly taking photos of him and he was loving it!!! So the first day we all hung out around the pool ... read more

Hedonism seems to be a way of life on the distant Mediterranean island of Cyprus. A party spot not that different from say, Ibiza or Ko Samui, where the world’s youth gather to sunbathe, club and go wild. Like all of these areas most of the people who travel here seem to leave their inhibitions at home. They are game for anything and the most pressing matter at hand is to have fun. Throughout the day, the white sand beaches are covered with bronzed girls strolling about openly in nothing but skimpy thongs and Gucci glasses as muscled thugs meander around them with a drink in hand and one thought in mind. Some get lucky, some don’t, but they all seem to be thinking the same thing. The numerous bars and clubs that line the beaches ... read more

...My Journey Through Cyprus... We landed at Larnaca International Airport, which we then had another 2hr drive ahead of us to Peyeia, to our Holiday Maisonette. Once we had it was about 6am and I didn't go to bed because I had slept on the plane, so I went and got change into my swimwear to go in the pool, there was a slight breeze when I had finished so I went inside to watch Athens 2004 on the tv set. 2 days later, we had set of on our journey through the Troodos Mountains it was absolutely terrifying when we were going up the windy and small roads up to Machirases Tomb and the Kykkos Monastry, although it was well worth the drive, if your into that thing. Going to Nicosia was a long day. We all went as far as Larnica, where we had a look around the paleontology museum. It was small, but ok, and we were lucky to get in as it was about to be closed for a clean-up following flooding a few days ago. We couldnt get into the municipal museum, in the same building, as that had already been closed. Mum and Jo stayed behind in Larnica while Dad, Colin and I went another 1/2 hour or so along to the divided capital of Nicosia. We parked just outside the odl city walls, had a quick lunch, then set off for our afternoons exploring. We walked along the top of the walls to the Liberty Monument, a memorial to Cyprus's struggle against colonial rule, EOKA fighters raining the ... read more
