Just spent the most glorious 3 days in a little seaside town called paphos. This is where Paul visited on one of his missionary journeys, and today we stopped by the church, with the supposed pillar that he was chained to and whipped! Acts 13:6-12 Paul and Barnabas preached the gospel to mainly to Jews while they crossed the island from east to west. Finally they arrived to Paphos. Paphos was the capital city of Roman rule in Cyprus and the center of the worship for Aphrodite, goddess of love and beauty. The city had evil reputation for laxity of morals. In Paphos Paul and Barnabas met Roman Proconsul, Sergius Paulos who wanted to hear the word of God. A sorcerer called Elymas wanted to turn him away from his faith. But Paul blinded him temporally. ... read more

back into turkey! did a tour a la flynn around the old city of nicosia and visited some markets..... then we went over the mountains to a 12 century monsastry which is nestled into the side of the mountains, called Bellapais, and overlooking the karenias harbour and out to the med - so beautiful!!!!! so very lazy lunch and afternoon, then went for tea at some of their friends who live along this hillside - reminded me very much of noordhook in the cape - same kind of vibe - but the feel is so greek/italian, with beaufitul boganvillas hanging from everywhere, big arches, tea gardens, cobbled streets etc.... having not seen mum (or any family) since jan, not that memory fades, but is maybe even heightened - and linsday has sooooo many of mums characteristics ... read more

Today was going to be a long day. We planned to drive up to the Troodos massif and visit some of the World Heritage Byzantine painted churches. The painted churches were built at the time the Venetians controlled Cyprus. The Venetians were Roman Catholic but the locals still remained Eastern Orthodox, and they fled to the upper parts of the Troodos mountains where they built a series of 'hidden' churches. From the outside they look like barns or Swiss chalets, with sloping roofs for shedding snow. On the inside they are elaborately painted in Byzantine style biblical themes. There are many churches, but 10 of them have made it on the World Heritage list. They are pretty spread out, and you must hunt down the person who keeps the keys, so it is only possible to ... read more

We are back on the road and the first stop is Cyprus. Our last visit to this busy island was an unplanned stop, 7 years ago, by the airline we were flying. This time Ron did the research and we planned a visit to the west end of the island to see the town of Pafos. Luckily we arrived and left before all the flights and boats started arriving from Lebanon. Pafos has a collection of Greek and Roman mosaics which were first discovered by a farmer in 1962. They are beautifully preserved and cover Greek and Roman myths and lifstyles. There are several houses in the complex with about 20 major mosaic floors. The entire site overlooks the sea and is located right in the heart of town. The town of Pafos was a typical ... read more

You must experience Ayia Napa to fully appreciate the pleasures drawn from this paradise… Every day saw us spend hours soaking up the atmosphere of Nissi Beach, a spot I could almost certainly spend my entire life at and never really ever tire of. So much so that day trips to nearby islands were forgotten, sightseeing was abandoned, and plans on running amok at the 3rd biggest Watermark in Europe were scrapped when we discovered this place. On any day this beach was jam packed with beach goers doing pretty much as they fancy. Nissi beach is beyond words - it is ineffable. Seven days in 38 degree temperatures spent relaxing in either the crystal clear waters or on the fine white sands, listening to the love the resident djs were pleasuring my eardrums with -meant ... read more

Apparently the nightlife of Ayia Napa is becoming increasing typical of Ibiza, only not quite as expensive. Not surprisingly I still found the time to spend a fair bit of coin. Every single building surrounding the Town Hall is a club or bar of some sort, including the Town Hall itself. There are literally hundreds to choose from, every one of them desperately vying for your presence. And despite the masses of drunken twenty-something’s from all over Europe, security is obsolete and bouncers are unsighted. You can wear what you like, act as you like, and party, as you like. What you wore to the beach that day was quite often the dress code for the evening. Crafty promoters line the streets outside their respective clubs tempting you with some form of carrot, be it offering ... read more

A divided city, a Greek city, another Greek city and a ghost town We travelled also before we joined TravelBlog. We have started to digitalise photos from those pre-TravelBlog trips and we are planning to write about some of them. Now the turn has come to a trip Ake made to North Cyprus in 2006. North Cyprus was invaded by Turkey in 1974 and has since then been occupied by Turkey. This situation has left North Cyprus somewhat isolated from the rest of Europe. From what I understand, North Cyprus has for three decades or so had very little contact with any other country than Turkey. Back when I visited North Cyprus the tensions between Cyprus and Northern Cyprus had started to relax a bit and I heard rumours that it was even possible to cross ... read more

On the 2nd of March 2006 we got married in the city of Larnaka in Cyprus. We were there for 5 days and travelled around the Greek part of the island. After wondering around by foot in the "huge" city of Larnaka, we rented a car and tried our luck on the wrong side of the road, starting in Limasol. Then we went to Paphos, the place of birth of Aphrodita, where we could enjoy some good winter Cyprus sun, zaziki and Keo beer, on a roof top restaurant. To sum it up as proper travellers we decided to explore the mountains of the island- going to the Trodos Mountains, where we could see the remains of snow and see this really nice and remote monastary.... read more
