Today I woke up late… roughly 1:00 PM. Forgive me... that’s 7:00 AM Kansas time. I have faint memories of Sean and Dan trying to wake me up to play softball with the Marley Marters (the Dublin softball team), whom we met the night before. I guess I said ‘no.’ When I finally did wake up and get moving, Tyler and I walked 15 minutes to the shopping mall to buy groceries. Observations made: (1) Limerick has a TJ Maxx clothing store, but they call it TK Maxx (???), (2) the Burger King here tastes exactly like the Burger King in the U.S (I had a spicy tender chicken crisp sandwich value meal). After Dan and Sean returned from playing four games of softball, Tyler and I joined the entire Dublin crew and ordered out pizza ... read more

Dan, Sean, Tyler and I took a bus downtown… and we just happened to walk upon a parade for the youth soccer clubs. We had dinner at Eddie Rocket’s American-style diner. Cheeseburger and fries… much better than my previous BLT. Afterward, we headed to Smyth’s Bar… the apparent hot-spot. Very nice place. Observations made: (1) the Irish really like American music, (2) the Irish really like American beer… I was drinking Schmiticks, but I noticed everyone around me drinking Budweiser, Coors, and MGD… go figure. After a cab ride back to Brookfield, we ran upon a drunken irish softball team down from Dublin for a weekend tournament. Dan and Sean were quick to bond with them. I opted for the disappearing act. ... read more

Today we got up, checked out of the hostel (which turned out to have really crappy beds, besides the really slow internet that cost £5/$10 an hour, which is ridiculous, and they charged us an extra £3 since we weren't HI members, which was really lame) and started walking to the White Cliffs park. We walked for about 35 minutes around the castle from the city along a really sketchy road with no sidewalks (a little dangerous for a road with tight turns and what seemed to be little enforcement of speeding laws), and then wound up at the cliffs above the harbor (turned out it wasn't even close to 4 miles away, it pretty much starts right outside the city of Dover). We walked along those cliffs for a while before stumbling upon a stairway ... read more

Unpacking is easy with no luggage. Dan brought three sets of clothes in his carry-on, I brought two sets of clothes in mine… Sean didn’t bring anything (just his cowboy hat). Off to the Limerick shopping mall. Observations made: (1) Ireland has Burger King, (2) Irish people can’t stop staring at Sean’s cowboy hat… some guy even made a quick draw gesture… some woman asked him if it was his birthday (???) (3) A BLT sandwich in the United States is NOT the same thing as a BLT in Ireland (irish “bacon” = thick, greasy ham). After a couple of hours, I’d say we left with the bare necessities. ... read more

Our final day at work will be Friday 15th July. We depart London Heathrow for Boston Logan on Monday 18th July. As you can imagine, we are beside ourselves with excitement! Despite the odd setback, it finally feels like we are about (quite literaly, in fact!) to get off the ground. The house has been sold and all of our belongings are in Rachel's parent's loft, our flight tickets are booked, we've had our jabs (ouch!) and we're raring to go! For those of you in the dark, our rough travel plans are as follows: Mid July to mid September: USA & Mexico Oct, Nov & Dec: South America Xmas & New Year: South Pacific Islands January: New Zealand February & March: Australia April, May & June: Asia July 2006: UK - boo! The next entry ... read more

We’re here. Nick, Sean, and I have been up for over 24 hours with no more than a few hours of sleep. The trip was an absolute nightmare. We were delayed out of Kansas City, then delayed out of Reagan in D.C., and when we got to Boston our checked bags were nowhere to be found. After we waited four hours in the baggage claim, checking the belts for all the U.S. Airways flights that had come into Logan from D.C. - no luck. The splendidly helpful guy at the luggage counter told us we probably wouldn’t see them before we left and that he wouldn’t be able to get them to us by the time we arrived in Shannon because it was out of the country and, hence, out of his realm of control. Needless ... read more

Well my diary of adventures is pretty stale at the moment so I thought I would take this oppurtunity to write a little entry to ease my mind. I am hopefully exchanging on Wednesday 6th July and this could be the day my plans start turning into a reality and not just a thought or pipe dream. I was at the Trafalgar 200 celebrations with some friends the other night and I bumped into a couple people I had not seen in a while told them my plans etc and they loved it. You either know two type of people those that think you are nuts selling it all up and travelling or those that love your sense of adventure and the lust and dream for something more life satisfying than the office 9 to 5 ... read more

It sucks leaving the airport with no luggage in hand. First stop… the ATM to withdraw some euros. Our traveling professor, Stacy Leeds, was nice enough to set up cab rides for the dozen students in our program. There is something comforting about seeing your name on cardboard. Our cab driver was good coversation. Two things we learned: (1) his favorite beer is budweiser, (2) Limerick has the best-looking women in Ireland (or so he says). Also worth noting: (1) sure enough… the Irish drive on the left side of the road (no surprise there), (2) there doesn’t appear to be a single stoplight in this place… it’s all round-abouts. The cab ride was 40 euros, or roughly $47. Yes… that’s expensive. We saw Tyler as our cab pulled into our apartment complex. Our accomodations Brookfield ... read more

Since we don't have class today or tomorrow, we decided to take a short 2 day trip to Dover; see the city's castle and explore the White Cliffs park. We saw the castle today, which was pretty good, but I liked Caerphilly in Wales a lot more, since it was a lot more open and you had a lot more freedom to do as you wished. The park to see the White Cliffs is supposed to be 4 miles away, and since we don't have anything better to do, we are going to walk there and back, make a day of it. Saturday we are going to try to see some Live 8, but I doubt we will see anything. It will be worth a try at least.... read more

Well, we've made it back home after an absolutely crazy weekend! We arrived on Thursday afternoon after a full day of travelling on trains and buses, and were greeted with a spectacular sunny afternoon. Some of our friends had arrived the previous day and had set up a great campsite just inside the main gate - we wouldn't know exactly how good the site was until the next afternoon... Audrey and I took a wander around the site to get our bearings, Glastonbury is absolutely massive. We made it about halfway across the site (over to the Jazz stage), where we found the pear cider bus (delicious) and had to turn back to make sure we'd get home before dark. Friday morning was a completely different story. Here's Audrey's thoughts... We had a fabulous time with ... read more
