Apologies to Eurythmics - I just felt the title of their hit There must be an angel playing with my heart to be rather apt today . I just love that song and it seemed fitting today to sing it if only in my head. . I had been to St Giles Parish church a few times in the past . The latest vist two weeks ago with the express plan of looking at the display of angels in the church . My photographs did it no justice. The camera on my phone was old and not up to any decent standard . So today before the football match with time on my hands I took to the driver to see them . The church is imposing in its setting in the town . and is ... read more

I found myself walking up a street at Coedpoeth . Too early for the hairdresser . If I went in now I would have to hope she would let me in , sit in a corner without any magazine to read and not drink a welcoming coffee. It feels as if we never will return to magazines on the shelves to read whilst waiting for a hair cut . Nor a coffee to pass the time away. I decided to walk up the road toward the War Memorial and the Carnegie Library and Snooker Room . Coedpoeth has a worn down feeling . The houses were once grand . Now the doors lack any patina and the stone is dulled by the blackness from years of mining dust , iron deposits and grime . I wondered ... read more

Day 579 - As I walked I wondered if this would ever end . Covid that is . It was a miserable day. The sky was steely . The clouds so thick they obscured everything apart from one sliver of silver where the sun was trying its best to shine through. A real silver lining in a sea of grey. I could not hear any birdsong . They were keeping out of the wet and the cold . The butterflies had long gone and even the dragon flies who had graced the riverbanks were no longer to be seen . The goosander had raised her brood and they had moved on. There was no sign of a single swan. Just me , the river which was just doing its own thing and a muddy path . ... read more

Day 547 of lockdown in its various forms . We have arrived home and things are returning to normal whatever that is . My walks continue despite not finding anywhere new to explore. I cover old ground . The road has reopened to Overton . The track along the riverside is open again . Natural Resources Wales pulled their fingers out and got the work on the riverbank completed in very quick time . What was assumed would take 8 weeks took a little over 10 days thanks to prompt deliveries and excellent weather conditions . There is a peace and quiet these days around the lanes . The birdsong is over and there is just the odd bird like sound from the fields plus the sound of the ducks on the river . The great ... read more

It felt Autumnal this morning . A slight nip to the air with a hint of rain . We had been lucky over the last few days to be blessed with an Indian summer . That late last hurrah or should it be huzzah of sunshine before the colder weather , the darker mornings, the shorter days and the long nights set in. Life felt like it was bumbling on in this part of Wales . I chose my paths carefully over the last few days . A trip along the river . Benign and very beautiful on this early Autumn morning . I pulled out the odd Himalayan Balsam plant that was quickly colonising the river bank . The thug of the river bank was pretty to be sure but neverless a thug it was ... read more

"Are we there yet?" " Are you getting up yet ?" " We have a long ride ahead of us " We felt a bit awkward this morning trying to put off telling Sion that we were not there yet nor were we going to have a long ride ahead of us . We had avoided the awkward discussion with the sheep about the intended trip to France . Phone calls to Eurotunnel had been done under cover of darkness when little ears were not tab hanging . We did not want to disappoint Sion but there was no way around this one . We knew we were going to have one very unhappy sheep. By 6.00 we should have been on the road heading around the M25 to Kent to pick up the train to ... read more

Day 527 of Lockdown . The days have just disappeared and I no longer seem to want to count them . I dont even know where my walking has taken me. Probably across France but in what direction . Right or left out of the tunnel - who knows which way I would go. Are the disappearing days like toothache or backache ? You know you have it . You notice it for days or even weeks and then all of a sudden the pain has gone . You never noticed it going . It just was not there one morning when you woke . Days are like that . They blend into each other and this feeling has got worse with Covid . The country opened up but we never noticed it .It is September ... read more

"A rainy day is like a lovely gift. You can sleep late and not feel guilty" Those are the words of Elizabeth Howard . On a summer morning the sound of rain is welcoming . It is a lovely gift that we appreciate as the water butt fills or we walk in the rain getting only ever so slightly wet . In the winter though the sound of rain is less inviting . More of the opportunity to stay in bed and not bother with the day . With Autumn just around the corner we surely will get more of these wet days . Days where rain on the motorhome roof would be welcoming . Snugly inside , heater on , coffee bubbling away and a good book to read . We still have not heard ... read more

I went to a football match today . It has been a long time but I found myself in the stands watching the beautiful game. Something different to travelling and the first event of the year where crowds have been allowed to gather to watch a football match. We were sitting up in the gods . Row X - we couldnt get any higher if we tried . We were waiting for the game to start . We had arrived early. We had little idea how many would be attending , what the car parking would be like and to be honest what sort of afternoon we would get . It is football not soccer so thats the first clue about our little football team. We were playing a friendly against Curzon Ashton whose game against ... read more

6,200 steps - that is what it took to walk from home to Millionaires row, back round the estate , past the school , up the river , through Friars Fields garden and home I set out this morning before work with the intention of not walking for an hour but waking as many steps as I could . I had read that if I walked down each and every street in the village , through every alleyway I could clock up a mile walk . So today my plan was to see how far I could get . Let's be fair about this . I never made the hour walk nor did I walk every street . I managed about half the village keeping to the one side and the outer limits . I imagined ... read more
