Our night in the castle was lovely. Although Don swears he heard a ghost in our room in the middle of the night. I slept through it all so I can’t confirm or deny but they do say the castle is haunted. After a hearty breakfast, we set off the the Culloden battlefield and Visitors Center. This was a fascinating stop. We had no idea of this pact of this battle on the UK or the world. It decided the UK civil war which had huge impact on the US revolutionary war and the way the Uk moved forward. From there, we did a totally touristy thing - a cruise on Loch Ness. No we didn’t see anything unusual in the water - but we did get a dog toy for Sadie. It also covered history ... read more

We headed out first thing this morning to see Edinburgh castle. We were too late the day we arrived and wanted to make sure to get there. What an impressive structure! It was easy to see how it would intimidate enemies trying to take it. We found it hard to believe that anyone ever did despite the history. We saw the Scottish Crown Jewels and learned more about Mary Queen of Scots. The dog cemetery also caught our attention. While we were there, several military officials showed up for a special service to commemorate the war memorial anniversary. The war memorial honours the 200,000 Scots who died during WWI and WWII. From there we walked back to our hotel, got in the car and headed North to The Royal Borough of Dingwall. We only made a ... read more

Today we split up and did different things. Don got up at 4:30 am and drove 1.5 hours to Saint Andrews to try to play the old course. Unfortunately, only the people who basically spent the night in the queue were able to get a spot so about noon, he headed back. I’m the meantime, I packed up our laundry and went to a local laundrette. It was a nice relaxing morning with my book. When Don got back, we went for a fish and chips lunch where a talkative Scotsman regaled us with stories about his naval family in the US. We walked from there to the National Museum of Scotland. It didn’t help us get too familiar with the history of Scotland, unfortunately. Then we did the Hop On, Hop Off bus around the ... read more

We knew we had a long travel day (4 hours) today so slept in a bit in Liverpool. After a nice breakfast at the hotel, we hit the road. Most of our drive today was on motorways. Since today was about driving, here’s what we’ve learned about UK driving. 1. Lane markings are only suggestions. You can wander across the lanes if someone is parked in your lane or it just feels right. 2. Any type of intersection can be called a roundabout. 3. Local drivers have a rhythm as to when to take turns on narrow streets or congested intersections. 4. The left side of the road is closer than you expect. 5. Parking “just down the street” is always farther than expected. 6. The bigger the road number, the smaller the road. The A5414 ... read more

So much for our dedication to photography. When the question came up yesterday evening whether we wanted to be out early again this morning for the sunrise, it was an almost unanimous "No!" So after another noisy night of wind and rain, it was very evident that we had made the right decision when I got up at a nice sociable time for breakfast. It wasn't raining but the sky was white and much too drab for photography. We all had breakfast together and then I went for a walk around Tarbert, which, on a Sunday is even more sleepy than on any other day. Our favourite coffee shop at the distillery was closed, as was the tweed shop. My flight was earlier than everyone else's, so after saying all my goodbyes to the rest of ... read more

It was another night of wind and rain, so we were not sure if it would be worth it when we got up early to head out for the sunrise. Our plan today was to go back to the Eilean Glas Lighthouse on Scalpay Island. There was a break in the rain as we were driving, but it started pouring again as soon as we got there, so we waited in the minibus for a while until it stopped. We knew that once we got to the lighthouse, there would be no shelter and it would be too far to pop back to the minibus for shelter. There were intermittent rain showers and, again, the constant wind, which kept blowing our tripods over. It’s a rooky mistake turning away from your tripod in the wind, particularly ... read more

The weather forecasts had predicted bad weather this morning, so we had taken the executive decision last night not to have an early start, to enjoy a lay-in, get up at our leisure and have a nice causal breakfast. This is always a risk as we would have been gutted if we had woken up to a glorious sunrise (especially if that news had come from the other photography group), but, as predicted, the wind was blowing and it was pouring with rain. Despite the lay-in, I was still tired as the storms had raged all night and the wind and rain seemed biblical at times. Apparently, it's all connected to my namesake, Storm Ian, which has caused a lot of unfortunate damage in Florida. It was clear that the morning was going to be a ... read more

As is normal with these photography workshops, we were up early and were planning on heading back to the same beach at Seliebost, which we had gone to previously for the sunrise (see ) as it can look very different depending on the sky. As we were on the way, however, we changed our plans and got diverted as the water in a bay on the way was dead still and we thought would make better photographs due to the potential reflections. We parked, climbed over a fence (being careful of the barbed-wire) and headed down towards the bay. It soon became clear that this was a huge mistake as the ground was beyond uneven. The long grass that we could see was bad enough, but the ground underneath, which we couldn't see, was even more ... read more

28th September Well those high winds the Captain mentioned yesterday didn’t disturb us during the night and this morning we saw the sun rise as we docked in Kirkwall, Orkney. An initial technical hitch which prevented the gangway from being lowered was a bit worrying but we need not to worry for long as it was soon sorted and we could then set off on another panoramic tour. We travelled inland to the spiritual hub of the island so-called Neolithic Orkney which comprises of four ancient monuments designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We passed the ancient Ring of Brodgar - Scotland’s largest stone circle with a diameter of 100 mtrs and much older then Stonehenge. We stopped to view the Standing Stones of Stenness dating back more than 5,000 years and one of the earliest ... read more

We had decided that we would head to the Standing Stones for sunrise today, which meant meeting even earlier as it was considerably further to drive and we would need to be there ready for the sunrise. We had heard that the other photography group were going there also, so we started to get competitive as we wanted to get there first to get the best spots. There are no principles, good manners or etiquette when it comes to photography. Maybe it will be cameras at dawn after all. The sky was very clear and we were able to spot some of the constellations given the low-levels of light pollution here. I say "we", but it was this one guy in our group pointing them out, as I wouldn’t know one constellation from another. We got ... read more
