I spent a couple hours on Monday night updating this blog from the 5th forward and got an Error 500 when I clicked Save. Lesson learned: set up the text in another file, Save, then Copy and Paste. The Conference has finished. Now we're prepping for our airport shuttle at 7:00am (here) in the morning. I will get us caught up, but now after I get home (from Denver). Thanks for your patience. Our closing day began at 9:00am. I wasn't sure when the laundry was being picked up, so I sat in the back of the room. Roger felt worse than the day before, so he stayed at the apartment. During the 11:30 break I got a text from the laundry service. He arrived in his BMW SUV about noon. Roger needed some OTC medication. While getting that I also picked up a couple small boxes and packing tape to get new purchases sent home. The final conference speaker announced the next ISBA gathering would be in Iceland in 2018, and just like that the 10th Annual was over. Goodbyes all around. I'd see one of the delegates in Colorado the following week. At the apartment I packed the boxes and filled out the paperwork for international shipping. ... read more

I spent the morning finding a place to do our laundry before going home. Taking dirty clothes back from any trip is something I try to avoid. My search turned up a self-serve laundromat, but they also offered pick up and delivery. I made arrangements for the next day. Then it was time to get to the conference that started at 9:00am. Roger wandered the city again. It wasn't convenient for us to have to keep meeting back at the outside door to the apartment each time we'd both been out. The day was overcast and drizzly. At our afternoon meet-at-the-door, I suggested I have a second set of keys made. Roger stayed in (he didn't feel well, but hadn't told me yet) while I did a few errands that included duplicate keys. I still had ... read more

Because I'd registered the day before I didn't have to be at the conference until almost 10:00am. With my day set, Roger again set off to explore and take pictures. The best speaker of the morning was a mother from a tiny town in Ireland whose son was diagnosed with Autism at 20 months, 22 years ago. Her story is a wonderful example of why I started Respite, Inc. The international conference shows how much of the world recognizes the benefits of such programs. The venue was built in the late 1700s and is tastefully elegant. The workshops that followed weren't nearly as motivating. I was disappointed in the one presented by two national organization representatives from the USA. Other sessions were worth attending. The conference finished for the day about 4:30. I took a longer ... read more

This was an easy day of exploring (and shopping). Coffee was made with a press and tasted pretty good, but there were grounds and sediment in each cup. Roger had some local breakfast wrap two doors down from our outside door. I was putting together the books and maps we no longer needed to send home, so we wouldn't have to keep carting them around in our luggage. Mid-morning Roger went out to take pictures and I headed off to a Mailboxes, Etc. The packed box was 5 kilos (11 pounds). Feeling much lighter, I went in search of other items to take home. There are so many places to shop. Roger and I met up about 2:00pm and went to the National Gallery of Scotland and its Inspiring Impressionism: Daubigny, Monet, Van Gogh exhibit. We ... read more

Our transfer car arrived at 8:15am. King's Cross train station isn't far from the hotel, but lugging suitcases around makes any distance daunting. Every transfer got us to our next mode of transportation with at least two hours to spare. At King's Cross we waited in the Virgin Trains Lounge. The platform isn't displayed until 20 minutes before departure. The trains are set up to transport as many people as possible, so very little room is available for luggage. Our window seats were at a table for four. The couple sitting with us were from Argentina and had been traveling almost 24 hours. Her limited English and our non-existent Portuguese made communication difficult. My backpack with my laptop was in the overhead rack. Most of the scenery was farm fields, then glimpses of the coast. I was definitely rough when I woke up. Being by the door had meant I got little sleep as people were coming and going all night. At least the hostel had a nice common room to chill out and eat breakfast in. I think we were all glad that by doing Glencoe yesterday, our guide was able to push our departure time back to about 9 or 10, if I remember correctly. The first part of the morning is a bit of blur due to tiredness. We stopped somewhere to take some photos of some Hairy Coos, I can't remember if this was on the side of the road or at a coffee place. My brain is/was fried. After all the gorgeous weather weather we'd had for the past few days, it had turned crappy again. ... read more

Good morning…. had my first ever kipper in butter sauce for breakfast. Very nice too… apart from the millions of bones, too fine to pull you just have to eat them… Grant had the black pudding with his usual, well liked also. So windy Wellington, – there is definitely a contender for your WINDY sign. Here. Of course the windiest spot in Edinburgh is where they have the tourist bus stops. I said to the girl whose job it was to wrangle and ticket the tourists . “You need a nice glass shelter here” she said “We had one until about 3 years ago, “Don’t tell me the wind blew it away”, I said. “I was standing under it at the time, just shattered and fell on our heads, they stopped the buses that day!” Funny ... read more

Edinburgh Well here we are arrived safe in Edinburgh. We landed last night at 7 pm to 14 degrees’ wind, grey and overcast. For all intents felt and looked like winter but as we drove into town the gardens are saying summer a great disconnect for my brain. Our hotel the Royal Scots club turns out to be an actual real club (Regimental club founded in 1919) with Princess Anne as the patron. (No jeans in the dining room – coats and tie for lunch not compulsory but preferred) The building is 200 years old and was first bought as a home by Margueritta Riddel in 1811, I’m thinking she would have been connected to the Riddel’s who emigrated to NZ and settled Gordonton and built Woodlands. Who in turn are connected to the Riddells from ... read more
