We started the day of in Inverness by waking up extremely early so that we could get out to the battlefield of Culloden. It was very calming and serence and was the perfect setting for an early morning trip. Getting to this location was however quite an experience. To begin, I could not find my memory card and then we missed the bus not only once, but rather TWICE. It was definitely not the start to our morning that we had wanted. When we got there, we were greeted by a sight that was truly breathtaking. It was green everywhere. After walking through the battlefield, we went into the exhibit hall where the walls were covered in informative plaques and findings form the battle itself. We took the bus back to the city and ran back ... read more

Woke up this morning really, really early, with the intention of getting to Culloden Battlefield when it was still shrouded in fog, but apparently the fates were against us, because in the confusion of trying to figure out which bus to take, we missed it twice... I know you're laughing, but don't forget the Scottish like to play friendly tricks on travelers. Finally just before 10 we found out that there's only one bus that goes to the battlefield, and all the others labeled Culloden are about 5 miles away from the actual historic site. We made it, it was wonderful, and cold, but very much worth the time we spent trying to get there. It's such an intense experience, walking over the clan graves near the memorial cairn, that lies between the Jacobite and Government ... read more

I'm finally to the place of been dreaming of going since I was a kid... parts of it are what I expected it to be, and some are better, others I find are polluted by modernization and crowds. It's interesting to see the contrast between the old town and the new, but in all of my research of this area, I had imagined it as it was, and not as it really is. The town itself is boisterous (at least as small towns go) and friendly. The people are wonderful no matter who you ask, and everyone is starting a conversation with you, wanting to know where you're from, what you're going to see, and where you're headed after that. We took a tour by the Jacobite tour company along the River Ness up to the ... read more

We started out the day in Dublin; got up early to see whatever we could squeeze into an hour and a half before we had to head to the airport. We saw several churches, Dublin Castle, St. Audden's wall and church, Trinity college, and the Bank of Ireland. I can't wait to go back and see more, and hopefully get outside the 10 square blocks we covered! We spent the afternoon traveling first to Edinburgh, where we transferred flights to head to Inverness. The plane was a puddle-jumper! Absolutely the tiniest I've been on since I was around 12 years old. by the time we got to the hostel everything was starting to close down, but we had enough time to grab a bite at a pub, and head to the supermarket to get food to ... read more

Just a quick one before we head from Inverness to Aberdeen. The Orkneys were amazing! Definately the highlight of the trip so far. We stayed in Stromness for 5 nights and just cruised around enjoying the slow lifestyle. It was my kind of place with local produce everywhere; we had Orkney cheese, bread, ice cream, vegetables, beer, haggis and everything else under the sun. We did get some family research done there and found out some interesting stuff but didn't find any gravestones or anything as I guess they were a pretty poor lot back then. The best thing we did though was rent bikes for a day to go check out the farm on which they lived in Mousland, just north of Stromness. We checked out an old derelict stone building that was likely the ... read more

August 29 - Inverness to Oban (Geoff) Time to head south! Set the GPS (now we have changed settings and have a not so stern male pommie telling us where to go) and left Inverness at 9.15 heading for Oban on the west coast. this will be our overnight stop before we get onto the ferry for Barra. As we headed south, we drove alongside Scotland's famous Loch Ness. The Loch is 23 miles (about 36 km) long but only ½ to ¾ mile wide. Still it is very deep - in parts up to 700 feet and contains a lot of water. We stopped at the end of the Loch at a little town called Fort Augustus (didn't look like a fort, just a little country village) and decided to go for a cruise on ... read more

August 27 - Off to Inverness (Geoff) Well, it was time to leave Edinburgh and head north to Inverness. left about 10.00 am so the traffic was not a great problem. Still took about 20 minutes to clear the city and get onto the A9 but once there it was set the cruise control and away we were. Stopped off in Perth (sounds strange doesn't it?) for some morning tea and a short bit of retail therapy - strange how I was the only one who bought anything - thought that was Sue's job! Off on the road again but only for an hour or so until we found a quaint little craft shop off the road in Dowally where we had lunch - Sue had a toasted sandwich and I had a baked potato filled ... read more

Geo: 57.4767, -4.23145On Saturday, we drove up north and visited Dunrobin Castle. It looks like a fairytale castle. We also stopped into a couple of villages. Sunday was a day of rest. On Monday we went west and visited Brodie Castle, Elgin Cathedral, the Moray Motor Museum and Duffus Castle. Brodie Castle is furnished and was great. Duffus was a ruins and not much of it was left. The Motor museum was small, but it had a very good collection of cars and the curator gave us a personal tour. Elgin Cathedral was very nice, too. On Tuesday, we did a loop around Loch Ness. We also stopped at Foyer Falls and did some hiking and pics. Wednesday we were at the Black Isle and toured Cromarty village in the rain. Thursday was a day off. ... read more

Time is now counting down until I leave the UK and head off on the next big adventure and what trip would be complete without visiting Scotland. Our family has it's origins in Scotland from around the highlands near Inverness and Loch Ness, but more on that later. We embarked on our journey very early on a Monday morning, flying into Glasgow due to cheap flights from Ryan Air and after a few hours of looking around and enjoyin the sun in St.George's Square it was time to bus it to Inverness. Well, what a bus ride! The scenery was beautiful (for the bits I actually stayed awake for!) and the guy behind us decided to drink and talk to himself or anyone who would listen for the next 4 hours. I drowned it out with ... read more
