Well, we finally had a great weather day! And perfect timing - today we went out on Loch Ness and toured Urquhart Castle. The loch was very calm and it was very picturesque. We had about a 30 minute boat ride out to the castle, whic was built to protect the southeast part of the loch. It was built in the 12th century - mostly ruins now, but enough still to identify parts of the castle grounds. Also today we did laundry! Found a laundrette in town, staffed by a wonderful woman who helped us get everything done. (She even puts the soap powder in the washer!) Had a relaxing evening - Jeff and Allison had dinner at a small Italian restaurant in town while the kids stayed in and ordered room service. Tomorrow - ... read more

Coming back to a 1st world country was luxurious in so many ways. Having a clean bathroom, access to an iron, supermarkets, our own computer to use, and being able to talk the language were very enjoyable. It was all fantastic, minus the weather. Arriving in London, it was rainy, windy and bitterly cold at 11 degrees. We had a weekend in London at my sister's to meet up with friends, get over our jet-lag and to do laundry and get ready for our trip to northern England, Wales, and Scotland. On our departure day, we were so cold that we were wearing longjohns in June of all months. The extra layer of clothing did not dampen our excitement as we saw Bath, the Lakes District, and parts of Wales before heading to Edinburgh. The ... read more

The journey to Inverness from Glasgow is one that I enjoy. The slow-moving A9 can be frustrating to the locals who battle tourists on a daily basis, but as a tourist the drive from city to lowlands, right up to the Highlands, seeing the scenery chang, always makes me smile and appreciate how lucky I am to live in Scotland, so close to all this beauty. Also, the further North you go the stranger the place names become (personal favourites include Auchtermuchty, and the River Garry which makes me snigger like a schoolboy and make bum jokes), and the number of "brown signs" increases dramatically. One day, we plan to do a trip taking in every brown sign we see, regardless of what it is for. This will include the mysterious "Time Capsule" which we keep ... read more

No Loch Ness Monsters up here in Scotland! I spent a couple of hours searching around the 70 mile lake that it is supposed to be in as well! The Loch Ness lake is obviously way bigger that I first though it would be and took a good 3 hours on bicycle to go and see only a tiny part of it then it started to pour so I turned around and headed home. So I'm up in North Scotland now but leaving tomorrow because the weather is supposed to be bad for a few days so heading to the West Coast then to Fort William to hike up the highest mountain in Britain which isn’t to big anyway but oh well. I Flew into Edinburgh on Wednesday after leaving several things behind at the airport, ... read more

Hi all, We have been in Inverness since last night - well about 3:30 pm yesterday, which is actually after sunset, so technically it's night! Our accomodation here is not quite as nice as in Edinburgh. We have a private twin room, but have to share a bathroom (next door) with a few other rooms, but haven't had to wait to use it yet. In Edinburgh, we stayed in a newly refurbished hostel, so all the fittings were almost brand new and our private triple room had an ensuite bathroom and a little table and chairs to sit at. We wanted to go to the Inverness Museum and Art Gallery today as it was raining lightly but steadily in the morning and looked as though it would continue all day (it did!). When we arrived there ... read more

Geo: 57.4594, -4.02469From the small town of Pitlochry, we headed up towards Inverness. On the way, we stopped at Blair castle, which was a fairly impressive, manor-type, castle. Being so early, we managed to avoid paying a cent to wander the grounds. Our luck continued at the nearby Scottish Whiskey Distillery, where we managed to get in early, have a quick look around and get free samples.Eventually we drove through the town of Inverness, and arrived at the battle site of Colloden. This was the site of one of the most famous, and significant battles in Brittish history, and in fact the last major battle fought on Brittish soil, back in 17th of April, 1746. The battle was fought between the Scottish Highlanders, under Bonny Prince Charlie, and the English Government led by the Duke of ... read more

Today’s rather odd title refers to the local name for Inverness, a town in north-central Scotland. It’s actually Ally’s hometown, although his parents are from the Isle of Skye, where everyone speaks “the Gaelic.” Anyway, the convoluted etymology behind this bizarre nickname proceeds thusly: Inverness means “town at the point.” It is located at the "point" of Loch Ness, the second longest loch in Scotland and home of the famous monster. At its north end, Ness comes to a point where it flows out into the River Ness. The River Ness twists and turns like a twisty, turny snake. . . or, in Gaelic, a “schneckie.” However, only people from this area area allowed to use the nickname. The rest have to call it Inverness, with the accent on the last syllable. Inverness was a nice ... read more

Inverness is currently the fastest growing city in the UK. I was only there 2 nights but I liked it a lot. Its clean and tidy and central to much of the Highlands of Scotland. Unfortunately the weather was not so nice when it poured most of the day whilst I trudged round Fort George nicely snug in my waterproofs. I pretty much had the place to myself and the audio tour actually wasn't too bad. I met a couple of Canadian girls at the hostel that evening and we joined in with some Scottish dancing at a local pub and afterwards in a cosy bar with a rustic 2 man & 1 women hippy band playing groovey music. Various eccentric characters spiritually danced the night away next to the stage and if you had musical ... read more

Blogeers Note: The further north we headed into Scotland the greater the difficulty we had locating computers and uploading photographs. As a result this entry is being added a little late. After the head wind heroics of yesterday, Day 9 was due to be a relatively short day, with reasonaby flat terrain loch side up the Great Glen and with a light tail wind. All went well initially as we hugged the edge of Loch Lochy for the first 30 miles, but things started to go a little awry at Fort Augustus at the head of Loch Ness. We stopped for a cup of tea at the local sheep dog trials, watched a few rounds of the event and bought some raffle tickets in aid of the local hospice**. We were somehow persuaded to take the ... read more

A normal rise for us today. We have got a bit planned, but not too much today. We got our clothes washed at the Laundromat and had a look around the city. We also booked our “Dolphin cruise”. This is a 2hr cruise to see some Moray Dolphins that frequent the harbour. Before the cruise, we decided to try the Pancake Parlour’s pancakes. They were huge, but very nice. After this, we went to our cruise. The cruise was quite relaxing, but there were no Dolphins to be seen at all. About all we saw was a few ducks. The trip was enjoyable though and before long, we were back at the pier. We were supposed to be transported back to the city centre, but the bus broke down and the tour operator ended up ordering ... read more
