Back in Fort William now after hitchhiking the measly 40 miles from Oban. It's the tail-end of my first 'highland experience', but that didn't mean there wasn't room for one more day of action-packed adventure! Even though there are extreme blizzard warnings, heavy snowfall and ice plaguing nearly all of Scotland and most of Great Britain at the moment, the only place the weather seemed to have forgotten today was Fort Willy! Even cars driving into town this morning (from probably not that far away) were carting about a foot of snow on their roofs, but here the sun was shining and there wasn't a cloud in the sky. So Rich, (the subdued- but insane- Canadian guy who manages the hostel here) and I decided to spend the day conquering the final highland frontier! Ben Nevis: ... read more

After Edinburgh we made our way to the Isle of Skye and stopped over in Fort William for the night. Went to a pub and let Greg legally sample the poison. There was a band comprised of two guitar players, one looking just like my 8th grade history teacher, and one with a beard he could tuck into his belt (I'm not exagerating!) They were good but Grandpa was disappointed that they played more Irish music more than Scottish. They sang a song about Cobh (a town between Cork and the coast) and it made me sad. We stayed in the dingiest, creepiest standing structure I have ever encountered. It was gross! The bed sagged so deep in the middle I practically had to tie myself to the side to keep from rolling on down in ... read more

Hello I have just spend a day hiking in Fort William and it was amazing. The staff at the Fort William Backpacker are great, the were able to supply me with suggestions, maps and were just fun to hang out with. I had intended to climb Ben Neveress, the largest mountian in the UK at around 4500 ft, but due to the thick fog that crept up in the morning I decided to do something less life threatening. I hiked up to the Steel falls, which were breath taking and a pleasent 7 hour round trip hike. I then jumped back onto the MacBackpackers bus to head to Oban, where I enjoyed my last real night in Scotland and went to the pub and had some snakebites, which are half lager beer, half hard apple cider ... read more

Arriving in Glen Coe early evening, we had a little trouble finding the B&B. After a couple turns we found the Inchconnal B&B and our room was adorable, decorated in yellow and blue. We went to the Glen Coe Hotel for dinner, which seemed to be a happening place. So after dinner, we went back to the hotel and got ready and walked to the place so we wouldn't be drinking & driving. We met 2 very nice guys who were garda from Inverness. To make a long story short one of the guys went and put toilet paper in the woman's bathroom for me. This was the first time I ever had a guy do that for me! We chatted with them until closing time then walked back to the hotel only to find out ... read more
