Dear All Greetings, from London! Although I am currently back in London again, I have just returned from an amazing four-day trip to Northern Ireland, it currently being our half-term break here in London. I really did have an amazing time over there in Northern Ireland, and although I only initially intended to write one Travel Blog entry upon my return, I have decided that in order to be able to do the trip, and my experiences there, justice, I plan to write it up in a total of three Travel Blog entries, based mainly on my three full days of travel over there. The idea for this trip came towards the end of 2017. Having recently returned from West Africa, and it still being many months away until my next planned big summer trip, I ... read more

After the hustle and bustle of a re-energized Belfast it’s to the pastoral west next and what is billed as Ireland’s Lake District. This is truly like going home and a chance to soak, albeit briefly, in an environment and culture that helped form the parts of me that Scotland had not. A divided highway smooths the trip from Belfast to the Ballygawley roundabout in Co Tyrone and from there we are tripping through country towns and villages to Enniskillen. Almost exclusively agricultural driven economies, the towns of Augher, Clogher and Fivemiletown display a selection of feed companies, farm supply shops, an active award winning cheese factory and a redundant creamery. Whilst once I would have measured success in rationalizing small cheese factories, seeing them now closed and shuttered, just fills me with great sadness. My ... read more

Belfast and Northern Ireland has a chequered history. Having spent many years living and working here during what is euphemistically referred to as "The Troubles" I can attest to there being more than that chapter in history to define this place. Here I am some 20 years on, returning to my adopted home, not only to revisit parts of "The North" but to cast southward into the Republic of Ireland. The largely coastal route will tease back the cassock to reveal the magic and silliness that masquerades as day to day life on this wonderful island; but first it's to Belfast I go. Spot of luck to kick off the visit by not being welcomed by the customary tipping rain. It is cool, I will not lie, but there is a promise of a colourful visit ... read more

First Sleep Belfast...arrive after 22.00 ….very late at night...in the dark … via the Cairnryan ferry. “Travel on the biggest ferries ever to sail between Scotland and Northern Ireland, Stena Superfast VII and Stena Superfast VIII. These sister ships travel from Cairnryan to Belfast in a crossing time from only 2 hours 15 minutes with a choice of up to 6 daily crossings so you can travel when it suits you.” from their website. Of course as luck would have it I was on the last of the six that day... so were a lot of other people ...some who had gone shopping and were returning with dresses bought for that all important Christmas Party … which one has to book for already … since end of September the ads have been out! Of course I ... read more

Today we are in Belfast. We have tickets to the Titanic Museum and we are going to try to go there I have reserved a wheel chair in case Dennis needs it. We are docked a have a long steep gangway down to the dock. Dennis makes it down the stairway and is walking to the cab when his knee gives out. The cab driver rushes over to help him and we get him into the taxi. The cab driver takes us to the Titanic museum which is only about a 10 minute ride from the ship. The driver goes in and gets the wheelchair. He is a very nice fellow. I ask for his card and ases will he come back for us. He says he will and if he is too far away he ... read more

I left Glasgow about 20 minutes later than planned but I put a little buffer in my timing. The forecast was for clear skies the entire route However, I got spit on about 20 minutes outside of Glasgow. The rain was not so bad that I had to stop and change helmets. Most of the ride was similar to when I was going the opposite direction a week earlier - beautiful. I stopped a couple of times to take pictures of the Scottish West coast. I finally learned the name of the big solitary Island between Scotland and Belfast. It is called Ailsa Craig- which translated means Island of Rock or Rocky Island. It is really an imposing figure, although you would have thought they'd have given it a little more mysterious name! It is noted ... read more

We headed out from Dublin with Rabbie's Tours, our group of 12 consisting of five Americans, four Australians, two Chinese, and one Canadian, and our driver/guide, Marcus. Our first destination was Belfast, where we focused on The Troubles between Catholics and Protestants in the 1970s to 1990s that led to thousands of deaths in Northern Ireland. We made three quick stops along Falls Road to look at murals of the hunger strikers (Bobby Sands, etc.), ten of whom died in the 1970's. They were IRA members who protested that they should be prisoners of war, not criminals, so wouldn't wear the prison garb, etc. As with most conflicts, there were lots of atrocities on both sides. We had a little break from The Troubles at lunch time with a two-hour stop at the Titanic Belfast Visitor ... read more

A port call in Belfast provided the opportunity to see a bit of Northern Ireland. The region appeared peaceful now, after so many years of factional strife. We selected another Paddywagon Tours excursion as our port tour at Belfast. Our first stop out of Belfast was at the Dark Hedges. The Dark Hedges is a line of 18th century Beech Trees along Bregnagh Road in County Antrim. They are very mysterious looking, like something out of Tolkien. In fact, the road and the overhanging trees were used in filming the TV series Game of Thrones, where they appeared as the King's Road. Other productions have also made use of their menacing appearance. The trees were planted ca. 1775 along the entrance road to Gracehill House. The entrance drive has long since become a public road. (Gracehill ... read more

Returning from the County Antrim coast to Belfast, the coach let us off at the Titanic Belfast museum. RMS Titanic was built in Belfast as were her sister ships Olympic and Britannic. The Harland & Wolff shipyard is still here as is the basin where Titanic was constructed. Harland & Wolff builds wind turbines today. The corners of the museum are meant to represent Titanic's bow and are scaled to size. This was a brief rest stop, though, no time to see the exhibits. Shortly we were back on the coach which took us to the Belfast City Hall. Free time to explore. The city hall is in the center of the city. Some went to investigate the shops or pubs. Susan and I went into the city hall. Belfast history is told both in a ... read more
