Leaving Ware the walk today was different from the off. Riverside paths being replaced by footpaths over open fields, alongside hedgerows bursting with the colours of spring, crossing a few streams thankfully by well maintained bridges and also for a while following the trackbed of a disused railway line. After a couple of hours I stopped for a break in the porch of Widford church, thankful for the shade. Here I learnt that the style of spire on this church and a few others that I had seen is known as a Hertfordshire Spike, a style seen on many churches throughout the county. The more that I learn about British churches the more they fascinate me. Leaving the church I dropped down into the River Ash valley, following it for a while before heading through woodlands ... read more

Decisions. Decisions. We had just been to the North East for the Outlaw's milestone birthday, but the prospect of back to back home games - Saturday and Tuesday - was quite tempting. The continued wet December could scupper the idea - those in the know realise that despite recent drainage improvements, waterlogging is never very far off the radar. However, the statement by the Northern Premier League put paid to any wavering. Both games were postponed. It was nothing to do with water, although I suspect that the Saturday would have been anyway. No, financial infringements were at play. The "real" MUFC and their precarious monetary position were deemed to have broken League regulations - correctly it would appear, I might add - and the playing licence was withdrawn. The price of salvation? Guarantees of £120,000 ... read more

It is Saturday May 6th 2023 and I am aboard a train bound for London. My fellow passengers are mainly families and groups of friends going to celebrate the coronation of King Charles. I however once we spill out onto the platform at Kings Cross station head to the heart of the old city just a stones throw from London Bridge and the monument to the Great Fire of 1666, to the church of St Magnus the Martyr. It stands hidden away amongst more modern office blocks and is the starting point of a modern interpretation of the London to Walsingham pilgrimage route, once the most important road in England. Back in the Middle Ages the shrine at Walsingham, dedicated to the Virgin Mary was one of the four great shrines of Christendom alongside Jerusalem, Rome ... read more

I started the second day of my walk with a visit to the Abbey Church in Waltham Abbey. Although just as with St Magnus' church yesterday I knew that it would be closed, the Abbey grounds are the burial site of King Harold which I thought would be worth a visit. As I approached the Abbey I saw a few people going inside so decided to follow them. Once inside I got chatting to a churchwarden who once I had told her about my walk said that although it was choir practice I could stay for as long as I wished. She also made me a coffee too, many thanks Linda it was much appreciated. After listening to the choir for a while, visiting the grave of King Harold and chatting with the lady in the ... read more

Where shall we go today? How about a museum/an art gallery and a model village all rolled into one. It will be a warm space , interesting things to see with a cafe for lunch . What is there not to like ? It became one of those ideas that turned out rather well in the end. You know the sort of trips you think about doing but put off time and time again. We pulled out our extra warm coats, a scarf, a pair of gloves and a hat and set out in the car with no name . The weather had turned extremely wet some days yet on others it was surprisingly cold with overnight frosts and chilly air . We were heading 45 minutes up the road towards Port Sunlight on the Wirral ... read more

I don't mind a trip to Shrewsbury now and again . It feels that there is always something to do and something new to see . I know eventually I will run out of small alleyways to explore , the museum will have nothing new to see but at the moment I still have a list of things to do . Places to see and things to tick of that list that makes up the county town of Shrewsbury . Today was going to be no different . I was not sure how long I would have to waste . Today was just a small service for the car . A biennual change of brake fluid which should take only an hour or so . The garage would do a car Health check and send me ... read more

Gloucestershire. The Cotswolds. The area is very much on the tourist trail. Bus loads descend in the summer months on relatively tiny populations. Bourton on the Water. The Slaughters. Stow on the Wold. Similar column inches and visitor numbers are devoted to the Regency splendour of Cheltenham - home of grand Georgian buildings and of course, the famous racecourse. The county town of Gloucester is somehow overlooked by the hordes. Skirted by the M5 motorway by those on their way somewhere else and missed off the coach tour itineraries. It did not seem that way on this bright, sunny autumn morning. Traffic was busy. It showed congestion on the route towards the Quays. I cut off to head through the city centre. The major sporting stadium venue in these parts loomed. Kingsholm - home of Gloucester ... read more

Sion did not sleep well last night . Before turning in he had got ready for his trip to Blists Hill Victorian Town. He had helped me set up the sav nav for the journey and was looking forward to seeing his best friend Woolly Mammoth. I had been to Blists Hill a number of times . The first in the early 1980's when the site was in its infancy . I don't remember much about it apart from it being on a hillside site with many industrial brick buildings . Sion had been to Blists Hill a few years ago when Suzy the motorhome required some work to Kathrein the satellite dish . I am sure we were driven there by the guy who repaired the dish and he gave us two complimentary tickets "Have ... read more

This morning was my favorite moment of the trip. I woke up in Paris, the Eiffel Tower in view from the window. Showered, then before the crack of dawn, was on the cobble stone streets of Rue Cler, with the locals. Walking to the Boulangerie to get the best croissants in the world. The only other people were the staff of the hotels doing the same thing, getting the croissants and baguettes for the morning breakfast, including the staff of our hotel. “A quick on Jour Deux Croissants si vous plait.” Two fresh croissants handed to you for 2.80 Euros about $3 (would pay 8 in NY). “Merci, au voire.” Walking back in the crisp Paris fall air, I stopped, took a deep breath, and truly savored the moment, I am in Paris, I truly belong ... read more

Life is a series of natural and spontaneous changes . Don't resist them - let reality be reality . My saying of the morning ended with the words Let things flow naturally forward in whatever way they like. Quite an interesting thought from Lao Tzu. One of the favourites churned out in my calendar at least half a dozen times a year . Lao Tzu not the saying . I guess driving to Whitchurch I must have churned up that saying , digested it , wondered if it were true and changed it slightly here and there to something I could relate to . The journey to Whitchurch was as always fairly uneventful apart from forgetting that in England I can still drive in residential areas at 30mph. That felt strangely exhilerating after the snail like ... read more
