(We've been without internet for four days, so I'm catching up now.) We left Liverpool early in the morning and travelled to Stratford-upon-Avon. Changing weather throughout the day, but we get some periods of good sunshine. We toured Shakespeare's birthplace, and in the gift shop there we purchased a Shakespeare book authored by Thomas Delise, a Century High School teacher with whom Celia and Andrea had an internship this past year! Next was Hall's Croft (John Hall, a wealthy doctor, was the husband of Shakespeare's oldest daughter), and Anne Hathaway's Cottage (Shakespeare's wife). We hiked back to the car (a long hike!) and changed shoes, shirts, etc. for our evening. After a nice dinner, we saw Macbeth in The Swan at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre. It was a stunning performance and everyody (even Christopher!) loved ... read more

England is a strange kind of home-coming. We were looking forward to reaching the British Isles for the relative ease of travelling in a country whose primary language is English and the cultural divide is easily navigable. So much of our national heritage (and my husband's personal heritage) is derived from the Mother Country that it has been fascinating for me (Dee) to actually see it at last. However, there have been a few surprises. Northern England seemed to be overflowing with floral prints, wall papered rooms, and bone china. I mean, I expected it, but it was still a surprise when it arrived in such unapologetic abundance. Nice, but slightly creepy. The first B&B we arrived at served us a huge pot of tea on a tray in the lounge. I had flash-backs to our ... read more

Hi all, I think I must have died and gone to heaven! I would like to take this opportunity to let my work colleagues know that I may not be back for some time ...... As our plane flew into Heathrow we were surrounded by fog. Quite a let-down. I remembered this fog well from 19 years ago - but that was Winter! The girls were quite disappointed. "I thought this was Summer" "You said it would be warm" they complained. To be fair, it was only 8 in the morning, but it hardly looked like a Summer's day!! We picked up our hire car. Not the car we'd booked, though, but an Alfa Romeo! It took some time to figure out the ignition system - no turning of a key required to start this ... read more

There is no way to describe everything I saw. It is so interesting and there is so much to see that it is impossible to give a good description. Also in most of the places I could not take pictures. I have added some of the pictures I do have. I did buy the guides to the houses and there are some pictures in them. June 4th Arrived in Stratford; stayed in Holiday Inn the first night b/c I had a migraine and the two mile walk to the youth hostel was out of the question. I did walk a little bit around the town centre after my migraine medicine kicked in. I had only intended on staying one night in Stratford but I decided to stay two nights because I did not get to do ... read more

We’ve kept in touch, but she lives up in Birmingham, so we get to see each other every few weeks or so when she comes home to visit her boyfriend, who incidently lives across the street. Anyways. I hadn’t ‘done’ thattttttt much of England since I’ve been here, with actually studying and flying to spain and whatnot. So since shes actually from rugby, (guess what was invented there?), we decided to start my traveling off by visiting the ... read more

On the way back we decided to travel via Stratford Upon Avon. Which is where Shakespeare was born. We went to see his cottage which was beautiful with nice gardens and window boxes. We missed him... by abo... read more

Our second day at Stratford was off to a good start with a delicious breakfast at our youth hostel. We walked for about an hour to Anne Hathaway's cottage, relying on sketchy maps, stopping every few minutes to decide which direction we should be heading in. ... read more

Stratford-upon-Avon - Our first day with real sunshine (well, for a few hours anyway)! Took a 2 hour plus bus ride to Stratford and spent the afternoon walking around town, visiting Holy Trinity Church where Shakespeare is buried, walked along the River Avon & Stratford canal, and ate at The Garrick Inn at night. ... read more

Church in Warwick was another great experience for me—I really enjoyed the way the branch seems to just get straight down to business instead of asking surface level questions like some wards back in Utah. The talks in sacrament meeting sparked some really good ideas for one of my essays. I love it when things work like that! Again, our group doubled the size of Relief Society, though it was nice to see more young people in the branch due to the presence of a university. Since we’d already moved out of our hotel rooms, we spent the day in the church, preparing lunch and practicing for our fireside. We’d been informed that morning that the mayor of Warwick along with some of the city council members would be attending, so we were anxious to get ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Warwickshire » Warwick May 12th 2007

In the morning we visited Warwick Castle, located right behind our hotel. The castle is beautiful and extremely well persevered, but the whole place was hyper-touristy—wax figures, over-dramatic audio and video, and four separate gift shops selling slightly different things. Most of the cheesy figures centered around the castle’s involvement in the War of the Roses. A bunch of us got sucked into this hour-long presentation on preparations for battle which was only mildly entertaining and even less informative. We then watched a rather gimmicky but still enjoyable demonstration of the English longbow, which is what essentially kept the French from doing anything productive in the Hundred Years War. The really cool part of the castle was the walk through the rooms that would have been occupied by the Earl of Warwick as late as the ... read more
