We've been finding that much of the UK would be better explored by car. In the interest of saving money, though, and not wanting to drive on the wrong side of the road, this isn't possible for us. So we've been trying to find ways to get out of the cities and see a bit of the countryside on our short weekend breaks (which is a hard thing to do). So we bought a day pass for the train, and rode the rails along a scenic circle route that they call the "Heart of Wales" line. First, the train headed out from Cardiff west towards the 2nd biggest city in Wales called Swansea. Unfortunately we had to leave early (7am) so it was still dark for quite awhile longer and we couldn't see whether or not ... read more

Just added my first picture showing a very tired looking me after John, Nick and I had cycled from Lichfield to Cannock up to Rugeley then back to Lichfield. I did this 29 miler on my old mountain bike and found it really hard...hence the red face. I learnt the importance of good bike equipment, such as padded gloves!... read more

OK. Not inspiring perhaps or even original but it is a start. Bike sort of packed....need some ties to secure the seat and stuff. The cycle bag is quite heavy but has room for some clothes. ... read more

He was a giant - 7 feet 2 inches tall, with a bushy white beard and specs resting part of the way down his nose. He wore a long, red robe with gold braid and badges, and a tricorn hat. His name was Martin. We were standing outside the Tourist Information Office in Shrewsbury, the county town of Shropshire in the West Midlands, about nine miles (14 kms) east of the border with Wales. The giant was officially the url=http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/howaboutthat/7169195/Pictured-the-worlds-tallest-town-crier-who-stands-7ft-2ins-tall.htmltallest town crier in the world. Today, however, Martin Wood had left his bell at home and was to be our guide on a walking tour of the town. "First of all", he said in his best Hagrid voice*, "let me tell you about the Romans." "They never got here", he added. ... read more

We had printed a map indicating the place of the Abbey Court Guest House, 134 Abbey Foregate. We walked through the bustling town centre via Shropshire Regimental Museum and Tudor buildings, most of which are used as restaurants and shops. We crossed over English Bridge, and walked on Abbey Foregate, and reached the hotel. Shrewsbury Abbey We decided to visit the red brick building, Shrewsbury Abbey in the afternoon on 4 September. There were a number of historical monuments, e.g. the war memorial for Wilfred Owen, original Norman arches built from 1083, the font, the effigy of Earl Roger de Montgomery who founded the abbey and was buried in the Abbey in 1094, and St Benedict window, which is a reminder of Edith Pargeter, author of twenty Brother Cadfael, detective novels, centred on the Abbey. We ... read more

We had decided to go to Attingham Park, south of Shrewsbury on Monday, 7 September. We took the bus, No.81 from Abbey Foregate. The bus was running through the charming residential houses and pleasant countryside. We were advised to get off at the village called Atcham. The bus stop was right by the gate for Attingham Park. We followed on the concrete path along the meadows. There were multi-coloured cows eating grass and they seemed to be used to visitors and drivers. We showed our National Trust Membership cards at the kiosk. We were told that there would be the guided tour starting at 11 o'clock. We stood at the lawn by ha-ha, and I took a number of photos of the 18th century mansion, and extensive landscape garden with cedar trees, river, arch bridge, and ... read more

Taming of the Shrewsbury 2009, Oct 23rd and 24th Well, I did something a bit silly which I do more often then I should. I decided to catch the earlier train to Shrewsbury which means I needed to skip breakfast at the B&B and run to make the train. I did in fact make the train but running with a pack and bag in hand on a hard surface at my age isn’t (I am sure) a pretty sight and it certainly is a bit painful. For this effort I will be rewarded with no breakfast and arriving in Shrewsbury at 10:31 instead of 11:17. Yeah! Now why did I do that? Although there was a really cute lady with lots of tattoos and a few obvious (and I’m sure not so obvious) piercing. Mental note ... read more

So, we leave on Sunday for our huge adventure on which we hope not to get lost and to gain a lot of cultural insight. Or something like that anyway! So far, we have practised camping in Borth, both broken our bungee cords and made a lot of lists of things which we really NEED to do while we're there (which we will no doubt forget to take with us). We have a kettle so we can make tea so Sarah S will manage to survive for a day or two at least. Ummm I think that's all the important stuff so far...As long as we remember to leave we should be ok :) Will keep you upblogged! hehe. Sarah B xxx ... read more

12/3/09 We’re on the train to Shrewsbusy at 6.30 in the morning. Somehow we’ve ended up sitting in the mostly-empty, first class carriage. I’ve got my retro, bus-boy hat on, we got on Marylebone station and a guy in a uniform ferried my huge huge suitcase onto the train for me, calling me ’Miss’. Given my caffeine-deprived state at the moment, the whole situation’s got a bit of a movie feel for me. Shrewsbury has a few things going for it. a) Ronan’s uncle Fred lives there, who is kindly providing us with free accomadation. b) It’s in the country…I’m seeing Lord Darcy already. c) It’s in Shropshire, from the coffee ad. Remember? “I like my coffee exotic.. Like where you’re from!” “Shropshire? How lovely!” We checked out of our hostel yesterday morning, then proceeded to ... read more
