Day 18 Shrewsbury - Chester 47 miles (563) I arrived in Shrewsbury at twenty past eight having got up very early to catch the Heart of Wales line up from Llandeilo. After a reviving bacon roll and a strong coffee from a Sandwich bar I set off . Pleasant cycling on country roads to reach the small town of Wem for a coffee break at a small cafe.I struck up a conversation with an elderly couple who wanted to know if I would make it up to Chester by lunchtime and to John o Groats by the following evening! Moving on I arrived at the Fenns and Whixall National Nature Reserve which is a large bog complex. Eating my sandwiches alongside an old peat cutting I heard a late cuckoo and saw a family of ... read more

Backdated entry, but basicly, cast off my worldly ties to catch a train to Liverpool and a flight to Reus to spend some time in Ginestar seeing the parents. Despite having only a couple of hours sleep following a party the night before I managed to wake and rouse dave long enough to get a lift to the station. Arrived at the station just in time to buy a ticket and jump strainght onto the train and with a quick changeover at crewe arrived at Liverpool for the flight to Reus.... read more

Hi again everyone...after a busy weekend last weekend in Poland, we went camping in Shropshire at a campsite we have visited several times before last year and again..this year was no disappointment. Firstly, the campsite is in a rural setting surrounded by fields with sheep, cattle and other wildlife that visited around our tent at night which included rabbits which was nice. The campsite is called 'Cartref' and is located at Ford Heath which is west of Shrewsbury. The owners, Pat and Alan are the most welcoming people you'll ever meet and always stop to chat no matter how busy they are. The toilet and shower block is in pristine condition and cleaned everyday, and we suspect its cleaned twice a day and is one of the reasons why we return to this idyllic site ... read more

I set out for Shrewsbury fairly early in the morning. I took the train up there and dropped my stuff off at the National Express left luggage facility. The train station is located in the bottom half of a mall. It is called the Darwin Shopping Center after Charles Darwin! I did not know that Shrewsbury was Charles Darwin's birthplace. I did get to see some displays on him and his work though. I only spent a couple of hours in Shrewsbury because there was really only one thing I wanted to see. One of my favorite series of books are the Brother Cadfeal mysteries written by Ellis Peters. The books are set in the 1300's at Shrewsbury Abbey. The remaining parts of the abbey are very much like Ellis Peters described it. Most of the ... read more

My first host family, Mrs Lynne Munden and Mr. Edward Munden, is living in Shropshire. I spent 6 days with them and a Chinese student, Vincent, during the X'mas holiday. This couple is so kind that they taught me a lot of British cuisines and table manners. They also told me about the British culture, history and their experiences when they were young. During the X'mas day, their son Brian paid a visit to us and we together spent a nice evening in playing card games. This joyful and warm circumstance made me feel a home away from my home. It also quenched my nostalgia during this special day. ... read more

Determined to put a lot of miles under my feet i don't hesitate to pack up my meager possesions as I wake at the early hour of 5 am, even before the faint alarm of my wristwatch is sounded. The idea of biking or walking for up to 15 hrs a day and sleeping for only 6 is hard to stomach, but the human mind will convince the body of almost anything when there is a clear goal presented. I unlock my bike from the concealed fence behind the police station and I am on the road long before any substancial traffic. An hour or so easily passes and I am absolutely enthused that good progress is being made so early. Upon reaching Llangollen the idea of grabbing a 'spar cola' is persisting, but its ... read more
