Last night was a special treat. Many of us went on the optional dinner and entertainment excursion; it was wonderful. We took a short bus trip from the hotel to the Welsh cultural center, the Millennium Center, the home of the Welsh Opera, restaurants, and other entertainment options. It is located right on the old Cardiff docks and was amazing in design. The evening began with a taste of Meade, an alcoholic beverage based on honey and developed by monks. It was sweet and delicious. Our hostess sat us right near the stage so our view of the entertainment would be excellent. The tables were set with red and white wines complimentary of the house. We were given a number of options for dinner. I chose the salmon appetizer, the beef dinner, and the chocolate cake ... read more

Day 2 Family reunion Ann (cousin) and her daughter, Lisa had organised a get together of as many family as possible. We headed off around 9 for the drive to Ludlow which took around 2 1/2 hours and arrived early for our family lunch. The table was already groaning with enough food to feed an army. Some of John’s donations for Samara’s Aid were stashed in Dave’s shed so we loaded them into the car before the mob arrived. Initially it was just their 2 daughters and their children but gradually more and more people arrived. I finally sat down to tally up the number the next day and calculated there were about 24 people there from 4 generations - ranging from Mum @ 87, to Janet’s latest granddaughter of 2 months. I stole little Isabella ... read more

To continue, we, left Cardiff and drove along the beautiful Wye Valley stopping to view the ruins of Tintern Abbey. We then crossed the Welsh Marches At Hereford to visit the Tudor market town of Ludlow in Shopshire. I had lunch here with a local couple in the town square, it was market day, they had a lot of questions about Canada. From there we went to Chester for a walking tour of the medieval city walls, the cathedral and the Tudor Rows. It's pretty cool to think you are walking on the same walls king Richard did. Our travels today ended in Liverpool, we were joined by a local expert who told us tales of the Beatles and other artists part of the Merseybeat as we toured through the city. We made a stop at ... read more

We moved on from Bridgnorth to the lovely market town of Ludlow. My stonking cold still lingering on and showing little sign of improvement. The town has a castle and at the back of my mind I believe it is a founder member in this country of Slow Food Movement something started in Italy. Most people miss Ludlow as the town has an excellent by pass. My lasting memories are of driving through 30 odd years ago in the days before the by pass. Ludlow being built on a hill meant hill starts in an old and decrepit Mini with dodgy handbrake and brakes. How we dreaded a hill start holding the car with its brakes wishing the lights would change from red to green. And the rain - the bain of the life of Mini ... read more

Well, Saturday was an excellent training day where we managed to get three of our 5 riders together for a 40+ miler around the Shropshire countryside. We started at Tenbury Wells at 10:30 and headed to Ludlow, about 10 miles over lovely rolling English countryside. Lots of short steep hills! Very good Interval training :-) From Ludlow, we then headed West up Whitcliffe Road, which is a lovely long hill climb (separates the men from the boys), then descended into the next valley before heading to Leintwardine. In Leintwardine we stopped for lunch at the Sun Inn and received an excellent welcome from the staff and locals. If anyone is ever in the area, I would recommend a stop there. The local ales were excellent and the Venison burgers were to die for, as were the ... read more

Good morning! 07.30 we departed home with Harry waving us off and taking photos as the old geeks set off on their travels...cries of 'don't talk to strangers and have you got your passport' sounded all too familiar...but this time it was Harry saying it to me :) Beautiful morning, birds singing, blue skies, lush green English countryside completely visable over the hedges as we sailed through the lanes to the motorway. Nothing has fallen out of the cupboards yet ...... Dover here we come. x ... read more

Geo: 52.3682, -2.71746Stoke-on-Trent to LudlowThe road to Ludlow was a winding, tree-lined country road. We went through many villages that were so small that you could count to 3 and you would have seen the whole town. Many sheep and cows were in the fields while it rained off and on the whole way. We got into Ludlow about 1:05 and would depart at 2:45. The town square was having a swap meet. I walked through the two aisles of tents and tables. Most of the stuff was jewelry or antiques. Ludlow had many old buildings that actually were made in the Tudor time period. I ate at one restaurant that was built in 1365. I had the Cottage Pie with chips (same as the Shepherds Pie) and a Coke. It was a good meal. The ... read more

Hi Folks Writing this looking out over the forecasters idea of a light shower - it is cold, wet and windy. Planned bike ride has been ditched and will drive to Leominster (about ten miles) as that has yet to be signed off ! (I am typing this in their library !!!!!). Aplogees for spells / grammmar 'cos no way to check stufff. Finally moved from Herefordshire last Wed - a miserable day. Cold, wet and windy - perhaps Wednesday is always like that in these parts .... Setting up camp in such conditions is not fun but eventually I was settled into my new home. This is a half acre field on a farm just south of Ludlow (Shropshire). What is known as a 'certificated site' - ie it is not a CACC club site ... read more
