We started our exploring with a town walk. The walk was billed as a free walk, and was run by the same company as our walk in Cambridge. The company was set up by students, who ask you to join the walk and if you would like to give them a gratuity at the end, they will accept whatever you give. You are asked to pay what you think they are worth. Our tour guide was Jamie, and he was very entertaining! He had graduated a few years ago, and so knew Oxford well. He guided us around the sights, giving both history and geographic information. With the information from the walk we were able to decide where to go back to look in more detail. We saw a number of the oldest colleges - Balliol, ... read more

Moving on to Oxford today, we decided that we would spend the day at Bletchley Park, as it was close to Oxford. We knew that because it is the weekend that many people would be out and about, and the other place we really want to visit, Blenheim Palace, would be better after the weekend. Bletchley Park was a secret base during WWII. It decoded messages, troup movements and orders from the German enigma machines. We arrived about 11.30 after a two hour drive through some lovely autumn colours. It has taken until the last week or so for the trees to really change into the autumn colours. We began with an introductory short film, then picked up our audio guides and started to wander around the property. To keep the work really secret, the team ... read more

Day 2 started off really early for me. I woke up around 6am from my "Privileged Room". No joke, my luck this trip was amazing. Andrew and I had lucked out and got an upgraded room that was way too fancy for two college students, but I was not complaining. I decided to do some exploring. It was nice to see the Oxford streets so empty. The masses of people often time detracted my view from the beauty of the city. I had grabbed an English breakfast, which I later found was not authentic after further exploring. Then I went to go get a haircut. The barber unfortunately was not able to cut my hair, but I appreciated his honesty. For Lunch we went to a place called Nandos. I was honestly disappointed by the meal ... read more

The last time I had been in a plane was in Richmond airport back in 2012 with my parents and sister; we were coming back from Orlando, Florida after spending a week in Disney World. And now, here I am, sitting aboard a British Airways double decker plane, casually sipping on Heineken and Red Wine, sitting beside some of the best friends a person could ask for, and geeking out to J.K. Rowling's Fantastic Beast movie as I head to England. The trip started off on a positive before we even landed, in fact, before we left Heathrow Airport I knew luck was on my side. More on that later, but I must first mention about how efficient and frankly easy the check in process was for getting into England. I had very little memory of ... read more

Today, Tuesday 24th January, is my last day in England. Ben is back at work and Florence is in nursery school, so Petra and I are packing up Sam and heading to Oxford for the day. Ben dropped us at the Bristol Railway Station on his way to work for our 90 minute trip. Thankfully, it was a bright, sunny, but very cold day. We had no real plans except for a two hour walking tour of Oxford University, starting at 2.00pm. Oxford, one of the world's best known university cities, is called 'The City of Dreaming Spires'. It's home to 38 colleges and the prestigious Oxford University, all of which are positioned around the medieval town centre. It has been home to royalty and scholars for the past 800 years, though people have been known ... read more

Ahh . . the joys of long distance air travel. We cannot really complain but we were ready to drop by the time we reached Helsinki. The Finnair A340 from Singapore onwards was just that bit more cramped and was significantly noisier than the previous A330. We found it difficult to snooze. Thankfully, the leg from Helsinki was short and in a brand new A350; perhaps the most technically sophisticated plane around. It still had that “brand new plane” smell. Note to Qantas: buy some A350s. Sunday morning and Heathrow welcomed us efficiently and we were soon at our Kensington hotel; only three and a half hours before we could check in. After twenty-eight hours of air travel, we felt badly in need of a shower; not to mention cleaning of teeth. Trying not to stand ... read more

From South Downs we drove past the Windsor Castle, then toward Oxford. Bill Bryson states in his book, Oxford is his nomination for most pleasant and improved city in Britain. There is too much to document here. The Oxford hostel was in a great location for access to the city by foot...the streets are clogged with cars and zillions of bicycles. Obviously an active city because of the University. Can't remember exactly, but something like 40 colleges, with 20,000 students make up the University. I took a hop-on/hop-off City Bus Tour to get oriented. The Natural History Museum is great, but the Pitts River Museum is outstanding. Museum of Oxford, Bodleian Library, on and on. Phil saw a posted notice for a midweek Jazz Communion Service at Christ Church Cathedral, so we took that in...very worshipful. ... read more

Oxford 2015 The first thing that I noticed when we arrived in England and especially in Oxford were the colossal buildings and amazing architecture. It made me exited to explore the city and gather background knowledge about these buildings. A picture is worth a thousand words so I let them speak for themselves. Here are some photos I took: *Note by the editor: many of the pictures cannot be pasted in this webblog due to technical issues. So to our first nights sleep in Oxford. Our feet were killing us. There is only so much walking you can do. We sat in Suzy with a warm glow which comes from wine and a meal and settled in for the night. Kathrein the satellite dish decided she was going to malfunction. Nothing new there then. Then there were the trains. In the day I love trains. I love watching them wondering where they are going and from where they came. The sleek fast red and silver Virgin trains rushed through on their way to London and up the north side of our country. The small colourful local trains rumbled through and then there were the coal wagons and the stock that was being whisked inland. In a house the noise would not have bothered ... read more

Day 1 After a 10 hour busride full of happy singing, we finally arrived in Oxford. We barely fit into the train that blasted us and the bus through the Chunnel. From what I’ve heard, Oxford supposedly is one of the best places to study. We’ve come here to find out. The whole group went to the Mitre. There we had, for some of us the first, fish and chips. The desert was delicious even though Daniel Gibb wasn’t happy about desert as he scolded personnel at the mitre not once, but twice about the missing ice cream with the pie. Afterward, some others and me decided to head into the ‘euro bar’, in celebration of Lynn’s birthday. Day 2 After our English baked beans, scrambled eggs, tomato, toast, sausages and bacon by ... read more
