It was that time to get Suzy on the road again. Her boots were taking root. They were developing flat spots. That meant we didnt need much of an excuse to get away for a day or two in her. Where to go though? Last year we visited Castleton in Derbyshire , it rained, the food was average for our Christmas meal and we felt as if we were in the middle of nowhere. So we needed somewhere warm. A city is warm isn't it? Somewhere dry. A city has indoor markets, museums, shops, cafes and restaurants. We needed a campsite near to a city or one on a bus route. So where to go? We had been to Cambridge earlier in the year and over the last week or two had been reading an article ... read more

Oxford is a small old university city, one of the eldest in the world and within it's nation's borders competing with what the people of Oxford refer to as 'the other one' or 'the C-word'. Within Oxford you can find several Oxford University Colleges built in the shape of a quadrant, which refers back to times when Oxford was a Saxon settlement which were traditionally built on the middle of a crossroad with roads leading to all four wind directions. One of the most prestigious probably is Christ church which is home to both modern film-sets and famous architecture. For example the Old Tom bell tower (the Oxford equivalent to the Big Ben in London) and a true Cathedral, namely; Christ Church. Christ Church even has it's own time-zone. In the old days when the clocks ... read more

In the beginning the trip was without form, and void; darkness was on the face of our bus. And the whole bus was hovering under water. Then our bus driver said, “There is a light!”; and there was light. And the whole bus thought that it was good. The odyssey had begun, a new dawn arose, we were finally a step nearer to heaven, the land of our dreams. For me personally the fourth time to England and the third possible way to get there: the Chunnel. In my opinion the most boring way to get across the water into this Anglo-Saxon island we all set our minds to for at least one and a half year. Maybe it the fact that I always get a headache for a few days after flying or my background ... read more

Hi All, As you can see I am now down in England just outside Oxford. Sitting on a boat on the Thames starting a boat trip around the area with Viv and Charlie. Everything looking good apart from the weather being a little cold and wet. Anyway, we finished up in Scotland after a great trip that finished off with a great show at the Edinburgh Tattoo. On the way down from Nairn we stayed for 2 nights at the Hotel Athol, a magnificent old manor house in Pitlochry. As soon as we saw it Di and I knew that we had stayed there in '98 with Chris. It comes complete with a 9 hole pitch and putt that gave us a lot of fun when the 6 of us had a make shift game. Lots ... read more

it's been a long time since I flew without a stop over and I did have many concerns but overall I would do it again. I was underwhelmed by MAS, though we did get here! (Too soon?). Air Asia is so much better in every way so I will keep recomending them. First leg of the journey was ok, in a 2 3 2 configuration on our own So Kasey could stretch out, I should explain that Cooper and Greg flew QANTAS and Kasey and I flew Malaysian Airlines, all about the cost really. You can follow Coopers trip via SCG youth IX england tour on Facebook. the international airport in KL was very basic, nicer than the low cost terminal but missing a newsagent or book shop so Kasey and I just tried to keep ... read more

what the what, a long day begins with birds, jetlag and coffeelag (which I call a 3am headache). so not long after we wake at 3, I notice the sky lightening! The Sun is rising, it isn't up until 5 but that is full light. We park and ride in to the city by about 8am, on a double decker bus, which Kasey loved. We orientated our selves to the city, starting at the castle, then the Blackwells (yippee, an amazing book shop), grabbed a chocolate croissant for Kasey, ( I miss these supermarkets so much, good old tescos, , sainsburys and M&S- so cheap even at a 2 for one exchange rate, we are juat so ripped off in Aus. Anyway we then headed to our free tours of Oxford for two hours, it was ... read more

July 10: Lazy day, Daughter concert Another busy lazy day? Haha. Short and sweet. First thing, I headed to Leinster Gardens. I had wanted to go beforehand but clearly now that they were mentioned in Sherlock, it was a necessity ;) It's quite something though, looking up at the facades - you have to pay attention to pick out the facades compared to the real houses. It's in the windows and the front doors. Very cool. For lunch I had to go grab my usual London treat and get a sandwhich and hot choco from Speedy's. Always good for a lunch break. Of course I couldn't resist the usual photo of "221B" where I noticed the knocker was crooked. Def made me smile. I was planning to head down to Waterloo or Blackfriars so o could ... read more

The Cotswolds are essential a range of limestone hills, covering an area of 790 square miles in the southwest of England, and combines the six counties of Worcester, Gloucestershire, Wiltshire, Oxfordshire, Warwickshire and Bath, touching out the outskirts of North East Somerset. The area is a favourite with both UK residents and visitors from abroad, and is without doubt a reflection of quintessential Englishness. Declared an area of outstanding natural beauty, the rolling hills of the Cotswolds have over 300 miles of public footpaths, two national trail walks and the largest number of conservation areas in England. Visitors come to explore the historic countryside enjoy the stunning views which have remained almost untouched for 300 years. Greetings from Ampney Crucis England. We are still having a fabulous time with the Willows. Yesterday were on bedtime duty for Bess and it was a bit of a shambles because Peter’s out of practice and I have no idea what to do. The three of us muddled through without too much trauma to Bess. We never made it to Blenheim Palace on Monday. We had some very sad news, our good friend Chris O’Brien died in Beijing where has been living for the past several years. The fact that his widow couldn’t speak much English and that we are overseas made things quite complicated. We were asked to track down Chris’ children neither of whom were in Australia. By the miracle of Facebook and Skype we all got in touch eventually. We had extra special ... read more
